  • Small north Devon site just off the A39, five minutes from Clovelly
  • A 15-minute drive to Westward Ho!; 25 minutes to Bude beach
  • Play area, shop and firepits on site; weekly social barbecues
As north Devon locations go, this is a particularly fine one – Roey’s Retreat is at the midpoint between Bideford and Bude, and it’s just off the A39 for easy journeys to either (or a whole host of other beaches and attractions…) This setting isn’t all about getting out elsewhere though – it’s also a great spot for walks down to Clovelly, less than two miles away, or other rambles along the South West Coast Path and around the Hartland Devon Heritage Coast. A drive of five minutes or so will get you to the neighbouring villages of Hartland or Woolfardisworthy for shops and pubs, or you can stroll to the local social club a couple of minutes away for drinks. Owner Nick hasn’t just relied on location alone to make his campsite an attractive place, either – he’s also kitted it out with all sorts of handy features including picnic benches, firepits, a play area with swings, and a shop selling various groceries and essentials (where you can also hire any camping kit you may have forgotten – electric leads for the hookups, air bed pumps and the like). Toilets and showers are provided, as are a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point for tourers. On top of all this is a friendly atmosphere that extends to welcoming families and dogs and involves Nick bringing everyone together for a sociable barbecue evening once a week (though you can also hire barbecues to do your own cooking too). You're also welcome to use the covered seating area where you can shelter from the rain (or, more hopefully, the sun) while having your meals and drinks – it makes a nice friendly alternative to hanging out at your tent.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Really friendly owners. Called us straight after booking on Pitchup.com to let us know the arrangements for our stay. Came to check on us and help out those who were stuck in the mud after a huge rain storm. Lots of hot water for showers and washing up. Little shop on site with essentials, microwave and freezer. 10 min drive from Clovelly. Really enjoyed our stay, felt welcome and the dogs loved it too.

Disliked: Too many spiders in the loo!

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Karen and Nick, owners, were very friendly and help, and did a tasty and good-value BBQ on Saturday pm which we enjoyed for both the food and the community spirit. The two toilets and one shower (for women, same again for men) were cute and had what was needed. Fairly well-placed for the SW Coast path!

Disliked: The noisy road right next to the site. The push- button showers were OK- nice and hot - but if the other shower is being used, or the washing up sinks, it impacted on the volume of shower. The onsite generator was loud...thankfully didn't impact us as we were in the non-electric field.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Large level pitches. Well maintained clean site Good shower Good location for coast path.

Disliked: Charged and paid for electricity but generator was only on for a limited period of the day. We did not have a water point on our pitch, as advertised, despite paying for this extra. The A39 is busy and noisy. Two showers for size of site perhaps not enough

From the manager: Hi Jo So lovely to have met you and that you had a good time staying with us. So sorry for the limited electric totally out of our control but we did notify you prior your stay and you said you were fine with it. We don't and have never charged extra for water it is a set price for each pitch. Karen

A lovely site, plenty of space and friendly owners. Good location.

Local attractions

The nearby stretch of coastline has loads going for it, and plenty of variety too. Westward Ho! beach (15 minutes’ drive) is a great spot for a family day out, with a wide swathe of sand and some rockpools for the kids to poke about in. The water there has gentle waves for a bit of bodyboarding; for a bigger swell you’ll need to head to Bude (25 minutes), which also has surf lessons and kit hire. There’s a lot of history scattered along the seafront too, including the old fishing village of Clovelly (five minutes) and the excellent Tintagel Castle (45 minutes), a place infused with the legend of King Arthur. A little way inland, Hartland Abbey (10 minutes) is worth a stop too. Trying to keep the kids entertained on holiday? There are several places nearby to help out with that – top picks include the Big Sheep farm park (15 minutes), North Devon Wake Park and The Milky Way Adventure Park. These last two are only two minutes’ drive away so they’re very handy to have in mind.
