  • Peaceful, luxurious Devon glampsite five minutes’ drive from Brixton
  • Pennywell Farm 25 minutes’ drive and Wembury beach 15 minutes
  • Underfloor heating and Smart TVs; leafy private gardens with hot tubs
Wild luxury. That’s what you get at Higher Hareston, an upscale glampsite set in the grounds of a lovely old manor house five minutes’ drive from Brixton in Devon. Tucked among oak and birch trees planted as sustainable woodland in 2013, the stylish wooden units each have their own private gardens, barbecues and – yes, result – private wood-fired hot tubs in which to soak away the cares of everyday life. Inside the pods the thoughtful touches come thick and fast, from quality linens on proper beds to welcome packs in kitchens equipped with coffee machines and all vital cooking accessories. There’s a Smart TV in the open-plan living space for your downtime (as well as snuggly robes for maximum lounging comfort), and underfloor heating to ensure you’re always comfortable in chillier weather. Thanks to the site’s woodland setting, your privacy is pretty much guaranteed, so whether you’re staycationing with your beloved or embarking on a Devon adventure with the kids, you’ll be surrounded by peace, solitude and birdsong. And when you get back to base after a day out, wait until dark to spy the stars twinkling far above as you soak in the wood-fired hot tub with a glass of wine in hand.

Buttercup Pod camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: Beautiful off grid style cabin, with great facilities, we loved the wood fired hot tub and fire pit, kids toasted marshmallows and slept in their bunk beds. Really clean and great quality, underfloor heating ensured we we're super warm even in February. Fantastic communication from the host, lovely welcome pack which was greatly appreciated. Would definitely stay again.

Local attractions

Kids with you? It’s off to Pennywell Farm (25 minutes’ drive) then, for a full day of goat milking, ferret racing, deer feeding and tractor rides. Be sure to say hello to the Pennywell Miniature pigs, the alpacas, stately Highland cows and cuddly lambs (in spring), or try your hand at grooming the heavy horses. Dartmoor Zoo (20 minutes) is another sure bet for the kids, where you can watch the big cats feeding and hear keeper talks. Nothing beats the beach for lazy summer days, so load up the kids in the car and head on down to the sand-and-pebble strand at Wembury (15 minutes), known for its clean water for swimming and decent waves for surfing. Also close by is sandy Mothecombe (20 minutes), an often-nigh-deserted stretch with excellent rock-pooling potential for the kids or plenty of rocky nook and crannies for romantic picnics à deux. If you’d like to learn something about Devon’s maritime heritage, the National Marine Aquarium and The Mayflower Museum are only 25 minutes away in Plymouth – and if you should hit a rainy day, you can catch a blockbuster film at Cineworld Cinema Plymouth.
