Vennlake: Main outside area

General

  • Self-contained glamping lodge in a central Devon location
  • A 15-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park; 35 minutes from Exeter
  • Kitchenette, wetroom and outside space; pub 10 minutes' walk away

How’s this as a cosy little spot for some Devon downtime? The glamping lodge at Vennlake is just the place for a peaceful retreat surrounded by countryside but only an easy 15-minute drive from Crediton (mostly along a main road; no wending your way along little lanes around here…).

All is set up here to be splendidly self-contained: the lodge has been well kitted out with all sorts of handy things including a wetroom, a spacious living area (with TV for lazy evenings) and a kitchenette that’s got a hot plate, kettle, microwave and fridge. A small supermarket is a couple of minutes’ walk away to stock this latter with whatever treats/drinks/brekkie bits you fancy – and anything you pick up can be consumed either cuddled up on the sofa or out on the deck for added fresh air and views.

Need some rather more substantial sustenance? Take a 10-minute walk to the local pub for dinner – a meal or pint at this 16th-century gem is a fine reward for any efforts you put on on local walks or lengthier rambles in the Dartmoor National Park, 15 minutes’ drive away.

If Dartmoor’s not part of your plans, there are plenty of other things to fill your days with: Vennlake’s nifty central Devon location means that it’s easy enough to hit either coast, take days out in Exeter or find rural activities like fishing, horse riding or nosing around National Trust estates.

Please note

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The greeting we received was very welcoming. Upon entering the lodge, we were impressed with how well-equipped it was and how well thought out each element was too. It felt really quite spacious and also private. It was a lovely stay and I'd definitely recommend to anyone looking for something a bit different.

    Where do I start....😁
Amazing weekend in an amazing lodge in a fabulous setting.
The lodge had everything we needed, warm, cozy and roomy.
Dave, the owner is the star of this show, We accidentally locked the hotplate and couldn't work out how to unlock it.....Dave gave Us His Air fryer for the weekend (although it only took 5 minutes to work out after an email response from Shaun 5minutes later 🤣)
The local pub was great for a meal on the Friday.
We will definitely be returning next year and will be recommending to all our fellow glamping friends.

    EVERYTHING!!!!

The lodge is the perfect size, lots of under the bed storage, sofa bed was perfect for our 4 year old !

The outside garden area was perfect for the little one with her space hopper and scooter 😍

The TV was a godsend when the little one was tired at the end of the day or when we needed to shower in the mornings 🌄

Parking is perfect as its at the bottom of the path to the lodge.

We didn't need anything extra when we were there, it's really well stocked with kitchen utensils, pots and pans.

Dave !!! We love Dave, from the minute we arrived he was just lovely 😍 so helpful, friendly and just attentive. Our little one loved Dave and couldn't wait to see him every night to tell him where we had been, nothing is too much trouble for them, even though we didn't need anything they still checked in on us. Loads of advice on where to eat, visit and avoid.

Honestly it was just perfect for us, we will definitely be back, thank you so much !!

    Good location.
Very quiet as it's the only pod onsite and is set away from the caravan/camper part of the site.
    Good wifi signal.
Basics left in cupboard (salt, pepper, sugar, oil etc) which is handy.
Great grassy bit out front for kids to play and massive recreational field across the road for football/games etc.

    Disliked:

Sofa bed was not very comfortable.
I would suggest you take a spare quilt or a SIM to put on top.
Not a dislike as we didn't need it but TV signal didn't work. Would suggest you bring a fire stick or similar as WiFi is great.

From the manager...

Sorry to hear you found the sofa bed uncomfortable and the tv signal didn’t work, we will look to see how best to over come both these issues.

Local attractions

Dartmoor National Park’s got to be top of the list if you’re heading here to hike: a 15-minute drive gets you over there to wander around the wide open spaces, with wildlife, villages and views galore to spot along the way (and cream teas to sustain you too…) There are three swimming pools within a 15-minute drive too, should you fancy a dip on your way back to base.

The natural sights are splendid indeed but they’ve got plenty of rivals among the local architecture too: smart Castle Drogo and the medieval ruins of Okehampton Castle are both about 25 minutes’ drive away and worth a wander, or it’s a 35-minute drive to Exeter to see its ornate cathedral.

For more of a glimpse into the inner workings of traditional life, pay a visit to the old forge Finch Foundry or the Museum of Dartmoor Life; both are about 15 minutes’ drive away. Dartmoor and Exmoor zoos are both about an hour away if you’d rather spend a bit of time in the company of a collection of animals.

Must see

  • Castle Drogo (7.5 miles)
  • Exeter Cathedral - Church of Saint Peter (14.1 miles)
