  • Family-run holiday park with stunning views over Woolacombe beach
  • Three-mile sandy beach 15 minutes' walk away along a footpath
  • Indoor and outdoor pools, restaurant and kids' activities on site
Sandy beach on your holiday wishlist? You got it. As the name suggests, Woolacombe Sands Holiday Park is in an excellent location for days on the sands of Woolacombe, on the north Devon coast. A path runs from the site to the beach, taking you down there in about 15-20 minutes without the need to get on the road. And what a beach this is, with three miles of gorgeous golden sand, rockpools to poke about in, and gentle waves for swimming and bodyboarding. Add in summer lifeguards to keep everyone safe and a regular beach cleaning routine and it’s easy to see why this has previously been voted Britain’s best beach. Being so close by, you’ll be able to wander down whenever you like – and you’ll still be able to look at it while you’re on site too, as the pitches are in an elevated position overlooking the sea. And what might you get up to while not at the beach? Well, this family-run park has been in operation for more than 30 years now, and over that time it’s developed a great list of ways to keep everyone happy while on site. The long list of leisure facilities includes indoor and outdoor swimming pools, an amusement arcade, UV bowling, crazy golf, a play park and a kids’ club with all sorts of fun activities (circus skills, painting and bug hunts among them). Keeping everyone fed is easy too – barbecues are allowed, and there’s a well-stocked shop on site, or you can grab a table at the Clubhouse for meals and drinks along with evening entertainment. Dogs are welcome at this park, with a pet wash area provided; human facilities are just as good, with five bathroom blocks and a launderette.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked The shop and club house was very handy and had everything you needed, food and entertainment wise. The included use of the pool was great. 15-20 min walk to beach.

Disliked Tent pitches was a bit small and cramped. We had 2 pitches and they not together, when we requested ones next to each other at reception, they said there was none available. We went to out pitches to discover one was blocked by with a massive oversized, back to reception we went, and suddenly 2 pitches next to each other was available. Not really the most trustworthy reception...

Staff vehicles always driving around throwing up dust wasn't very pleasant.

The toilets blocks only had 2 toilets and only 3 showers, nowhere near enough, and sometime need to queue.

Electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Nice clean site, great location, with good facilities.

Disliked Advertised as having free wifi on camping pitches, but you cannot get wifi on the camping pitches, you have to walk towards the clubhouse to get it. So this element was definitely mis-sold.

Non-electric grass campervan or tent pitch (six person)

Liked Woolacombe beach was nearby. The swimming areas and entertainment centre were good.

Disliked Where we were pitched was extremely windy which made it very difficult to put the tent up and to sleep. The shower/toilet blocks could do with a revamp. There was no hot water one of the days. They were a bit grubby and they could do with more shelves and sinks.

The attractions of Woolacombe beach are likely to fill much of your time – but Devon’s not short of excellent beaches, so if you fancy a change of seaside scenery you might like to hit the surf at Croyde (15 minutes’ drive) or Saunton Sands (20 minutes), or head to Ilfracombe (10 minutes) for the Tunnels beaches – it’s also the port for trips to wildlife-packed Lundy Island. Elsewhere along the coast, you might like to spend the day at Watermouth Castle (20 minutes) and its attached theme park, take a walk around the National Trust’s Baggy Point (25 minutes) or step back in time at the traditional fishing village of Clovelly (50 minutes). Keeping kids amused should be simple around here, with the likes of Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (20 minutes), Exmoor Zoo (25 minutes), Lynton & Barnstaple Railway (25 minutes) and The BIG Sheep amusement park (35 minutes) to choose from.
