What a lot there is to do at Wheatland Farm. And around its stellar setting too: this 21-acre wildlife haven is within easy reach of top destinations such as Exmoor and Dartmoor, as well as the famed coasts of both Devon and Cornwall. Wheatland Farm is two miles from the village of Winkleigh, four miles from the nearest train station at Eggesford and two from the local bus stop at Winkleigh Turn (iyou're having a car-free Devon holiday, the Wheatland team can collect you from either). Exeter and Devon beaches are both within 45 minutes' drive. Do stay around on the farm for some time first, as Wheatland is a peaceful place well away from main roads, farmed to attract Devon wildlife and set up for relaxed breaks among a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A third of the site, Popehouse Moor, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its culm grassland habitats and rare plants and animals. Guests can wander around the reserve or along the local walks, take bikes and boats out, or join in with countryside craft activities in the summer holidays. Wheatland is a multi award-winning low impact green tourism business. Wellies and fishing rods are available to borrow for no charge, and the farm also runs a free guided nature walk.

Balebarn 4 bedroom lodge

Liked: all you need for the stay, lots of space,great views,friendly host

Nuthatch 2 bedroom cabin

Liked: Beautiful, setting, lovely well-equipped chalet and host Ian very helpful. Picked up from the bus stop by Ian and welcomed with some home-made scones.

Disliked: You need your own transport to make the most of the area - the bus is infrequent on weekdays and doesn't run on Sundays. The local shop in Winkleigh is an hour's walk away so planning for food is essential (although there is a nice pub in the village).
