Peace and seclusion in our Devon cider orchard

General

  • Comfy converted yacht in a Devon cider orchard with Exmoor views
  • Half an hour's drive to Westward Ho! beach and South West Coast Path
  • Stargazing hatch and firepit; fresh bread, eggs and firewood supplied

Ahoy there, me hearties… and other nautical phrases you can roar in an accent that sounds half-Devon and half-pirate… sail forth for a splendid maritime stay on a converted yacht, snuggled into a cider orchard just over a mile from Umberleigh and with views over Exmoor.

Now some way from the briny, the former sailing boat Sea Spray is on land at Lemons Farm Glamping, and decked out for happy holidays rather than high seas. On board, crew members sleep in a comfy triangular bed (better than the hammocks of yore for sure) with a hatch above for gazing up at the night skies. Packs of cards, board games, blankets and cushions make the little living area lovable and outside there's a firepit for cooking and evenings of stargazing and lazing.

The team behind this brill bolthole will supply you with wood and kindling (bring your own charcoal for barbecuing) and even fit you up with fresh baked bread, eggs from their free-range chickens and flowers from their garden.

They're friendly to the planet too, with every effort taken to use renewable and sustainable sources: hot outdoor showers (with views) are housed in a hut of recycled wood and the sun's rays power the indoor lighting and the coolbox in the camp kitchen, where you can cook up a storm (or just a snack) on the gas hob.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Beautiful site and view, the orchard was completely enclosed so we didn't have to worry about our pup wandering around. The owners were lovely and helpful and the fresh bread and eggs from their chickens were delicious!

Beautiful and peaceful spot. We had the whole orchard to ourselves. A totally unique experience sleeping in the boat. The hosts were really lovely and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. They even left some home made bread and eggs from their chickens in the kitchen for our arrival which was a lovely surprise. Only a short drive to a number of beaches. Highly recommend.

Lemons Farm is absolutely brilliant. The outdoor shower is great, the boat is a little tight but very cosy and a fun place stay. We had an amazing night sat out by the fire with the most incredible night sky to gaze at. The outdoor kitchen is incredibly well equipped and cooking and washing up was a breeze. The homemade bread and eggs were a lovely touch and Katherine and Tino were fantastic hosts - responsive when we had any requests but left us to it the rest of the time. They've really put a lot of time and energy into the little details which makes it a very special place to stay. Will come and stay again if we're back down that way in the future.

Local attractions

Vital (and victual) business first: there's a pub with food five minutes' drive away and plenty more of them, plus shops and supermarkets, in Barnstaple (15 minutes' drive).

With supplies sorted, hit the beaches of Westward Ho! and Woolacombe (half an hour and 40 minutes respectively) for surfing, sandcastle building and burying your siblings in the sand. If you're into walks, the former's beach links up with the mighty South West Coast Path, though you're under no obligation to do all 630 miles of it…

Equally popular with walkers and cyclists, the Tarka Trail passes through 32 miles of the Taw estuary, hitting many of the wildlife-heavy spots featured in Henry Williamson's 1927 novel. Join it at Torrington (20 minutes) or, like the famed otter, fish the Taw yourself (enquire at the High Bullen Hotel in Chittlehamholt, 15 minutes from the site).

For more energetic pursuits, the rides at The Milky Way Adventure Park launch you into space screaming and the Ultimate Adventure Centre in Bideford has the whole spread from kayaking and laser tag to an assault course, surf school and Nerf arena. Both are within half an hour's drive.

If you fancy some calm after that, make for Ilfracombe (40 minutes) for rides over the waves to the bird-thronged wilderness of Lundy Island.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (6.5 miles)
  • Castle Drogo (22.0 miles)
  • The National Trust Killerton House & Gardens (27.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (10.8 miles)
