  • Scenic family-friendly site on the spectacular Dartington Estate
  • Five minutes’ drive from Totnes and a half-hour from Plymouth
  • Zipwire, cinema, arts and crafts, and restaurant
Active types seeking luxury getaways would do well to make a beeline for Camp Dartington, a family-friendly site in the grounds of the spectacular and sprawling Dartington Hall Estate, five minutes’ drive from the Devon market town of Totnes. The site’s well set up for burning energy, with plenty of walks to follow (with kingfishers and otters to spy along the way), and Dynamic Adventures on the grounds providing canoeing, zipwiring and archery outlets for guests. Those of a more artistic bent are looked after too: there are arts and crafts courses (including life drawing, sculpture and spoon carving) to sign up for, gigs and theatre in the Great Hall, and a 14th-century converted barn cinema showing current movies and arthouse films. The estate’s listed gardens are pleasant to saunter around, with plenty of routes to choose from. Food’s easily sorted too, with a café serving breakfast, lunch, tea and cake, a restaurant (in the medieval feasting hall) serving lunch and dinner, and local organic vegetables and eggs for sale in the shop a few hundred feet away. Should Dartington Estate somehow grow tiresome, a 10-minute stroll into the village of Dartington will lead guests to The Shops – a collection of stores selling glassware, jewellery, crafts and local delicacies – and the Devon Gin School.

Liked: Lovely spot. Short walk into the beautiful Dartington Hall gardens was a real treat. Parking off the field was no problem and lack of cars gave the place a real relaxed feel. I enjoyed watching a buzzard hunt the edges of the field while I drank my morning coffee. Will definitely return.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The pitch and very peaceful! Dartington is gorgeous and the cinema and festival was wonderful! Plus the cafe was excellent!

Disliked: The toilet and shower block was too far away plus not very clean or easy to use! Also it would be better to have trolleys rather than wheelbarrow s???

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This was my first camping experience since I was a teenager over 20 years ago. I had a really nice time. Dartington estate is a beautiful place and a great location for camping. The camping field is nice and spacious. The toilets and showers are well looked after and also has separate toilets as well. Soap was provided in the toilets and for washing up and I liked that there is a freezer. The staff were also extremely helpful so would def come back again.

Disliked: The only thing I would change for next time (and this is my fault as I didn't even consider this until the tent was up) is the pitch location as my tent was located right between the showers and kitchen. Unfortunately I had a rescue dog with me -it was his first camping trip as well but he started barking every time someone walked past - child or adult and some parents got a bit angry over this, but everyone had to walk past my tent to get to the showers/kitchen, so I was in a really bad spot. He did have a bark collar on but in the end I had to keep him inside of the tent which wasn't ideal, but he was quiet inside. The kitchen area was also a bit noisy at night so will def ask for a quieter location next time as there were plenty of these on the opposite side of the field.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Clean facilities Everything we needed was available Lovely views Quiet campsite Lots to do nearby Great value for money

Disliked: Shower curtain and shallow tray in the family/disabled shower meant water went all over the floor A few more wheelbarrows would have been useful
