Spacious pitches

General

  • Scenic family-friendly site on the spectacular Dartington Estate
  • Five minutes’ drive from Totnes and a half-hour from Plymouth
  • Wild swimming, zipwire, cinema, arts and crafts, and restaurant

Active types seeking luxury getaways would do well to make a beeline for Camp Dartington, a family-friendly site in the grounds of the spectacular and sprawling Dartington Hall Estate, five minutes’ drive from the Devon market town of Totnes.

The site’s well set up for burning energy, with wild swimming spots and walks to follow (with kingfishers and otters to spy along the way), and Dynamic Adventures on the grounds providing canoeing, zipwiring and archery outlets for guests.

Those of a more artistic bent are looked after too: there are arts and crafts courses (including life drawing, sculpture and spoon carving) to sign up for, gigs and theatre in the Great Hall, and a 14th-century converted barn cinema showing current movies and arthouse films.

The estate’s listed gardens are a pleasant saunter, and visits to the Dartington Dairy for milking experiences and goats milk ice cream come highly recommended. Food’s easily sorted too, with a café serving breakfast, lunch, tea and cake, a restaurant (in the medieval feasting hall) serving lunch and dinner, and local organic vegetables and eggs for sale in the shop a few hundred feet away.

Should Dartington Estate somehow grow tiresome, a 10-minute stroll into the village of Dartington will lead guests to The Shops – a collection of stores selling glassware, jewellery, crafts and local delicacies – and the Devon Gin School.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The main shower/toilet block has ramp access and there is a disabled shower room available on site.

Great nature trails nearby (but not very clear signage)
    Fridge and freezer

    Disliked:

Cannot park the car next to tent hence you need to make a few trips to tent with wheelbarrow. I had to inflate huge air beds with electric pump from drop off area and carry all the way to our tent which was the furthest from drop off point.

Decent site (a field) with pretty ok facilities including showers (extremely hot almost burning that couldn't be adjusted) and toilets. Everything clean enough I guess.

Communal kitchen area including three sinks was ok.

    Disliked:

Not able to park car near pitch - my god this was a nightmare. Absolutely exhausting humping all of the gear for a family up camping trip up and down the field. Watching the other campers struggling with their equipment was amusing although realising that we also had the do the same!

Other campers putting their fire pits in the wheelbarrows filling them with soot - ridiculous.

Communal fridge was a bit of a surprise considering the COVID-19 situation. I think this should have been out of bounds myself.

The usual drunken fools talking and shouting and swearing until all hours.

Young child next door crying in the early hours.

    Grass needed a cut.

Some traffic noise in the morning.

    Disliked:

I felt I couldn't safely shower one morning as they were very dirty. (I know this is partly due to other people not clearing up after themselves.
I got lost on arrival and couldn't get hold of anyone for a while to help (phone signal?)

We had a really soggy stay at Camp Dartington, but the site and facilities really made up for the fact that the weather wasn't great. The kitchen area with fridge, freezer and washing up facilities is really useful. It was nice to have the flexibility of some covered spaces which we could move a picnic bench under during downpours. The site itself is really big so you don't feel like you're on top of other groups, and that also meant we could stay up enjoying our fire pit until late without disturbing other guests.

    Disliked:

One of the showers in the ladies block didn't have a working light the entire time we were there. This meant that everyone had to use one shower and it quickly became blocked meaning you had to shower in a basin of dirty water. The toilet and washing facilities were regularly cleaned though and always had loo roll.
