Camp Dartington: Grass pitches

General

  • Scenic family-friendly site on the spectacular Dartington Estate
  • Five minutes’ drive from Totnes and a half-hour from Plymouth
  • Wild swimming, zipwire, cinema, arts and crafts, and restaurant

Active types seeking luxury getaways would do well to make a beeline for Camp Dartington, a family-friendly site in the grounds of the spectacular and sprawling Dartington Hall Estate, five minutes’ drive from the Devon market town of Totnes.

The site’s well set up for burning energy, with wild swimming spots and walks to follow (with kingfishers and otters to spy along the way), and Dynamic Adventures on the grounds providing canoeing, zipwiring and archery outlets for guests.

Those of a more artistic bent are looked after too: there are arts and crafts courses (including life drawing, sculpture and spoon carving) to sign up for, gigs and theatre in the Great Hall, and a 14th-century converted barn cinema showing current movies and arthouse films.

The estate’s listed gardens are pleasant to saunter around, with plenty of routes to choose from. Food’s easily sorted too, with a café serving breakfast, lunch, tea and cake, a restaurant (in the medieval feasting hall) serving lunch and dinner, and local organic vegetables and eggs for sale in the shop a few hundred feet away.

Should Dartington Estate somehow grow tiresome, a 10-minute stroll into the village of Dartington will lead guests to The Shops – a collection of stores selling glassware, jewellery, crafts and local delicacies – and the Devon Gin School.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Reception is unmanned after 8 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

good for young ones and for those not seeking a wilderness experience01/09/2022

Nice, open, easily accessible field in the heart of Dartington Estate. Good camp if you have young ones and don't want to have an actual wilderness experience. Quite near civilisation! Nonetheless we enjoyed the stars, the pitch, the location.

    Disliked:

The organisation of how campers were placed was not brilliant. We booked 1 night in advance for one night's stay and were given a pitch number. When we arrived, there were very few campers (6 groups on a 85+ place campsite) all aligned to the back edge, place very close together in a row. Squashed tight in the corner of a very spacious field.

When we found our site number, someone else had already had the same site and was staying another few days. We resolved it easily with a friendly manager at the Dartington visitor's office, but it should have been much better organised given how few campers were registered!

For what it is, its getting on for perfect

    Disliked:

Suggestions: create a dedicated mobile charging space ie a mid-height large shelf with an edge (so phones can't fall off) and multiple USB ports a bit further away from the sinks to avoid the possibility of water splash.

You could also improve your offer of tourist information and information about local facilities (where can I eat at 8pm) and local footpaths the estate.

Could you create a better footpath to the river ? The offer of a river swim was a draw to the site but the path to the river (when we found it) was longer than hoped.

Pitches are good but publicity should be more honest29/08/2022

    Good location, decent sized pitches.

    Disliked:

Being allocated a pitch right next to other campers, despite most of the pitches being empty. The attractions like the river, shops and kids play areas are nothing like nearby, much further than the publicity makes them sound.

Really beautiful campsite, well maintained. The facilities have everything you need, nice warm showers, washing up area, a freezer and electric point for charging. There are a few lovely pubs within a 10min walk and a petrol station for supplies. A really good base for exploring Devon and 40mm walk in to Totnes via a woodland path.

    Disliked:

It didn’t affect us but there is no staff on site and as we were leaving there was some confusion with people being camped on pitches that someone else had been allocated.
