Take a walk to the top of the site hill for breathtaking views across the bay

  • Devon farm site within minutes of several beaches
  • A mile from the River Dart, two from Paignton and three from Totnes
  • Peaceful setting on 400 acres with 15 acres of apple orchards
What might you say to camping on a Devon farm only a couple of miles away from the beach, minutes from Paignton and Totnes, with views that might make you crumble? What about a site that produces its own scrumpy cider from 15 acres of on-site apple orchards among its 400 acres? Like the many returning guests of Broadleigh Farm Park, you might say it’s pretty sweet. If driving makes you crabby, the nine acres of Broadleigh Farm Park are where to base yourself to see the sights of Devon: Paignton and Totnes are two and three miles away respectively; supplies – and pubs – in the village of Stoke Gabriel about 15 minutes’ walk, and the activities and sights of Dartmoor within around half an hour’s drive. Miles of walks are available straight from the site, and for little pipsqueaks, Pennywell Farm and Paignton Zoo are both within (short) driving distance. Facilities including showers, toilets, launderette and washing-up area are kept in apple-pie order: you’ll find free hairdryers too and there are disabled facilities and a parent and baby washroom. Broadleigh is a working farm, so while dogs are welcome, please keep them on leads while on site or unless in the separate dog-walking field.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: We arrived after the reception was closed but this was fine as there was clear instructions and guides posted as to where our plot was and how to get to it. Easy to find and well sign posted coming down the roads leading to the camp grounds as it is off the main roads which we preferred Stayed in the lower field which was nice and quite for nice evenings sat relaxing. The facilities where close by and these where kept clean and tidy having suitable facilities to be use for all. The grounds where kept well and having a dog with us there is a nice large area to let them off the lead and go for a run safe and secure for them to be let off without worry. There is good phone signal in the area so did not require the use of the Wifi for our stay.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: We have enjoyed a two night stay at this campsite. Although when we arrived reception was closed and our name wasn't on the site map displayed on the door, a quick and pleasant phone call soon rectified this. We were given a lovely large flat pitch to enjoy our stay in our VW type 2. The facilities are plentiful and absolutely spotlessly clean at all times of day. Walking into Stoke Gabriel is a easy and pleasant walk. Walking down the bottom of the field and through the gate on to a lane, walk on until you meet the road . You are then able to walk to the edge of Stoke Gabriel (aprox 20 minute) by mostly walking on the grass verges. At the edge of the village either walk in using the pavements or take the footpath over the hill. This way is more direct for the church and the pub. All in all a very pleasant walk. We had a delicious meal at this pub by the church and the staff were extremely friendly. I certainly recommend this campsite with its very friendly helpful staff and Stoke Gabriel is a pretty place with lots of areas to explore.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: We arrived for two nights, later than we thought - I did telephone to leave a message as reception was closed. We looked through the door but missed the sign! Luckily a lady in the field told us about the map ! We were right at the top of the huge field in the corner by a footpath - which would have been fine if the camper to the right hadn’t been diagonal - camper to the left had their guy-ropes into our pitch. Fortunately we use an awning on the back of our car and use the car as our camper. We wouldn’t have been able to park at the side of a tent. It was pretty tight in there - while looking down the hill there was masses of space everywhere. We set up camp, a long walk down the well kept grass and beautiful reception area with masses of flowers growing, it all looked well maintained. The toilet blocks are large, basically clean - it was early evening the toilets weren’t that clean, which is down to other users, only 1 soap dispenser was working out of 4 or 5. I did have a shower the next morning which is huge - and the handy window sill is great as a shelf and having the outside space with a bench and hooks is really handy to keep everything dry. The water was a great temperature that you can’t change. The water goes off and on making it really handy to not faff with shower controls. The view was lovely looking up to the hill- the night sky was vast star gazing was made extra special by bats soaring above our heads and a flock of geese went over the horizon line. The site was very quiet and peaceful, which we like. We kayaked at Stoke Gabriel and had a picnic on Slapton Sand beach with the Ley behind us - the drive along coast line with a trip on Dartmouth Ferry is stunning.

Disliked: Feeling squashed in a corner when the field was so spacious. The toilets and sinks not being clean but as I said that’s down to the other users as it was early evening.

Local attractions

The Devon village of Stoke Gabriel is about a mile from the site and has a supermarket, pubs, a shop, a post office and gentle riverside ambles along the Dart to ancient village streets or the old apple orchard. Pick up some crabbing gear and head for the Stoke Gabriel quay to catch a few specimens; this is a well-known crabbing area and just the spot to teach the kids how to master the art. If boats are your bag, hire a vessel to sail up the river to Totnes or catch the ferry downstream to Dittisham, opposite Agatha Christie’s old home and inspiration at the Greenway Estate – no need to keep your eyes peeled for somewhat spectacular river views. From here you can go on to Dartmouth, where the river releases to the sea, and stop off for an afternoon’s shopping or to see Dartmouth Castle, one of a pair of forts protecting the mouth of the Dart Estuary and part of a harbour cruise from Dartmouth to Kingswear. Safe and spotless beaches abound within a few minutes’ drive of Broadleigh, from the award-winning sands of Goodrington, the closest beach to the site, to nearby Brixham and Torquay among other family-friendly sandy fare. If the weather’s a little damp, Goodrington’s Seashore Centre has free admission and info on the history of the 22-mile stretch of the English Riviera. Broadleigh lies roughly halfway between Plymouth and Exeter, both within about 40 minutes’ drive.
