  • Wildlife-filled Devon meadow site bordered by the River Avon
  • Dartmoor National Park 15 minutes' drive; half an hour to the coast
  • Simple pitches with access to a river pool for wild swimming
What a gorgeous spot for getting out into full-on nature… the pitches at Bickham Bridge Field are in a circular meadow bordered by the River Avon, and with a couple of historic stone bridges just outside for that extra touch of classic English countryside charm. Come along to this Devon site and you’ll be sharing the space with the butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies that call the place home – and you may well spot visiting kingfishers and dippers along the riverbank too. If you’re very lucky (and very quiet), there’s the possibility of catching a glimpse of some otters as well. The riverbank is a fabulous location for a picnic – but if you’re not content with watching from the side you’re also welcome to get in for a dip. Just next to the site the river forms a kind of natural pool that’s lovely for a wild swim in summer. The camping meadow is filled with meadow grasses and wildflowers in spring and summer – and in a bid to make the visitor impact as low as possible facilities have been kept to just the essentials of a drinking water container, compost toilet and a 15-minute hot shower available for a small fee in the main farmhouse. As there’s no electricity on site, it’s a good idea to bring a torch (and then turn it off so you can admire the spectacularly starry skies overhead). An hour of phone charging is available in the farmhouse for a small fee. Where to find this little slice of rural loveliness? Well, it’s up at the top end of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty about five minutes’ drive from the village of Diptford and 15 minutes from Totnes. The Devon coast is about half an hour’s drive away, and you’ll easily be able to dip into nearby Dartmoor National Park too.

Local attractions

You may well simply choose to get out and stroll through your scenic surroundings (there’s a nice circular route from the site down to Gara Bridge and back) – but if you’d like a more extensive walk, another option is Dartmoor National Park. From here it’s best accessed via South Brent (15 minutes’ drive), close to the Avon Dam, or Cornwood (20 minutes). A hike along the South West Coast Path is always a fabulous option, too – or you might choose just to head to a single seaside destination. A half-hour drive gets you to Dartmouth for seafood and steam train rides, to Blackpool Sands or Wonwell for beach days, or to Bigbury-on-Sea for a trip to Burgh Island. Bit of town time? Take a trip to Totnes (15 minutes) for the markets and places to eat, or aim for the old town in Ashburton (20 minutes). City life is over in Plymouth (half an hour) or Exeter (45 minutes).

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: We had a lovely stay very simple but lots of thoughtful touches really appreciated receiving the pin point location. The only suggestion from my 5year old dughter is they could put fairy lights in the trees by the river
