General

  • Family-run park on the border of Devon and Cornwall
  • Free-range eggs, bacon and sausages produced on site
  • Dog-friendly with designated dog-walking field

Devon or Cornwall, Cornwall or Devon? There are certainly worse decisions to make in life, but many that are far less tricky. The good news is that at The Old Rectory Caravan and Camping Park in Tavistock, you’ll be slap bang on the border of these bountiful counties, so you can explore both with total ease.

Enjoy a slice of relaxed and self-sufficient living at The Old Rectory but fear not, simple living is no less comfortable at this family-run park. Alongside the modern toilet and shower blocks, which have disabled access, the site also has a laundry room, a washing-up area, and a play area with swings and a slide.

Little extras to aid your transformation into a fully-fledged country connoisseur include welly loan, a welly and bike cleaning area and plenty of recycling facilities (to keep your stay green through and through).

Fill your tums farmers-style with the free-range eggs, sausages and bacon produced on site, which the owners will handily pop in to the small communal fridge for you, and, when the weather’s right, some home-grown veggies fresh from the polytunnel. Just put some cash in the honesty box to cover what you take.

For after dinner, there’s an on-site book exchange or you can get starry eyed as you gaze at the dark skies above in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

There’s a smallholding on site that little Old Macdonalds in the making will love trotting around and sticking their snout into. Chickens (rare breed and vorwerk cockerel), Aylesbury ducks, Gloucester Old Spot pigs, Suffolk and Herdwick sheep, Shetland ponies and a new native beehive are all there.

If you’re bringing your own well-behaved four-legged companion, they can be exercised in the site’s designated dog-walking field.

Cosy clean comfortable camping pods and excellent, well run site. 19/08/2017

Everything! Declan was so friendly and super knowledgeable giving great recommendations. The pods were convenient with parking opposite and were very cosy and well insulated. We slept like logs! Enjoyed the site and the amazing sausages produced on the farm. Toilets and showers were spotlessly clean and were able to dry our towels on the communal clothes line. All needs have been catered for at this site and the owners are visible if you need them but not intrusive. Would highly recommend.

    Disliked:

Nothing at all, it was faultless and we had a superb holiday.

We would like to thank Declan and Sara for a fantastic stay. They made us feel very welcome and they were very friendly. They do a tremendous job and work very hard. We really enjoyed our stay and we were very impressed with the camp site. It has splendid views and the site was spotless. The pod was great and very clean. We enjoyed the chickens coming to visit and the other animals. We will be recommending this site to other people. Thank you again to Declan and Sara.

This campsite is the most tranquil of places to stay. Declan and Sarah are the perfect hosts who will go out of there way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The views are idyllic and on a clear day you can see for miles. There are free roaming chickens, ponies, ducks and Gloucester Old Spots. Children are invited to join Declan at feeding time and learn more about the animals. The pod we stayed in was very roomy, it also has 2 lights, a heater and 2 plug sockets. Each pod has it's own picnic table and veranda. Bricks are provided to put BBQs on to prevent burning the grass. The showers blocks are good enough for a campsite, providing showers, toilets and a wash area. Declan and Sarah like to recycle so separate bins are provided for you to help with the recycling. There is a communal area for washing up, a fridge and a freezer are provided free of charge and for a small fee you can use the washing machine or tumble dryer, a washing line is also provided. There is also a fridge that holds fresh eggs laid by the free range chickens and Bacon and sausages produced from the pigs there is an honesty box for these items. I have made many memories with my family here and look forward to making many more there.

Local attractions

Did someone say cream teas? Of course they did, for the little market town of Tavistock, just three miles from The Old Rectory Caravan and Camping Park (which guests can easily get to on the local bus), is the home of this scrumptious English delicacy (or not so delicate, depending on how many scoops of clotted cream you dollop onto your scone), and it’s the monks of Tavistock’s Benedictine Abbey that we have to thank for creating the fair jam-and-cream treat way back in 997 AD.

As well as the cream teas, the regular farmers’ markets will delight food lovers, and history buffs with have plenty to explore about the town which has World Heritage status as it sits just on the edge of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.

Elizabethan explorer and mariner Sir Francis Drake was born in Tavistock and his statue can also be found in the town centre. Horrible History fans can step back in time at Morwellham Quay (five miles south of the park) - a live action Victorian museum with a historic village, port, copper mine and railway - they can even dress up and take part in the action.

Plymouth, also connected by bus to The Old Rectory, is close by (it’ll take about an hour on the bus and just over half an hour if you go by car). It's known as Britain’s Ocean City, so scale the depths of the big blue at the National Marine Aquarium - the largest in the UK. With interactive elements and talks from the pros, kids can fish around four of the globe’s oceans from the Plymouth shores to the tropics, for fun facts and conservation tips.

Once you’ve taken in the best views from under the sea, head to Plymouth Hoe and its lighthouse, Smeaton’s Tower, to spy some spectacular sites across it. For when all that brisk sea air has worked up an appetite, the city has plenty of restaurants, pubs and cafés (many of which specialise in fresh fish); there are country pubs serving lip-smackingly good grub if you care to drive further out, and for fine dining, The Horn of Plenty country house restaurant should be visited.

Looking to head away from the towns and cities rather than into them? Then just a ten-minute drive east from the park will lead you to the edge of Dartmoor National Park where you’ll find 368 square miles of wild open space.

There are three visitors centres to help you decide where to start, with the one at Princetown (just a 25-minute drive from The Old Rectory) displaying free-to-view exhibits and photography. If it’s good enough for Spielberg, then it’s good enough for us: the War Horse motion picture was filmed on Dartmoor so we’re sure keen photographers love galloping about to take many a spectacular picture, while active types can horse ride, walk, hike and bike their way around the 450 miles of on- and off-road public walkways.

For something a little different why not try geocaching or letterboxing, or take to the waters for kayaking? You can rent equipment from establishments in and around the park and there are cafés scattered about for any much-needed refuelling.

Tamar Trails activity centre is less than a five-minute drive west from the campsite and here visitors of all ages can take their pick from land, tree and river exertions. Monkey about on a high-ropes course, zipwire, and tree jump, perfect your bushcraft skills, or take aim in an archery class.

Maddacleave Wood (just two minutes in the car southward from the site) is home to Gawton Gravity Hub - an intense 500-foot mountain bike descent trail, and if the kids still aren’t satisfied, Trethorne Leisure Park (about half an hour’s drive north) has something come rain or shine: dodgems, soft play, farm animals, bowling, crazy golf. We’re exhausted just thinking about it.
