Off to Dartmoor National Park for walking and cycling by day, followed by some stunning stargazing by night? Use Tavistock Camping and Caravanning Club Site as your base – this well-equipped family-friendly site is in a lovely spot about five minutes' drive from the town (handy for shops and places to eat) and surrounded by gorgeous countryside. Being within the national park, this is an excellent location for hikers – and an even better one for cyclists, who can join National Cycle Route 274 (Ilfracombe to Plymouth) just 200 yards from the site. There are also several National Trust properties nearby to visit, and it's about a 40-minute drive to the many attractions of Plymouth. Whichever of these you choose to fill your day with, you’ll be coming back to a quiet rural location where the lack of light pollution means you can expect some wonderfully starry skies on clear nights. This spacious site is managed by the Camping and Caravanning Club, with both members and non-members welcome. Members benefit from a discounted rate (the price shown here) so make sure you select the correct membership option when booking. Facilities at this peaceful park include a play area, a shop, a launderette and two large enclosed dog walk areas for your travelling pets. The smart modern bathrooms include a parent-and-baby room and wheelchair-accessible facilities.

  • The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. XL Bully, Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

  • Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Occupancy

  • Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).
  • No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
  • Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Pitches

  • A cable measuring at least 25 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.
  • If you are a member of The Camping and Caravanning Club please provide your membership number in the "Special Requests" box in the booking form. Membership will be verified on arrival.

Liked We had a very warm welcome from Dave, who showed us where everything was and gave us the most useful piece of paper in the world: pubs, walks, taxi's and details of the amazing little bus that passes the front door to/from Tavistock.
Excellent, clean and tidy facilities, everything has been well thought out and the staff are thoroughly helpful. Thank you for a fab few days.

Local attractions

Exploring Dartmoor National Park will surely be top of your to-do list here, perhaps heading out to historic spots like Merrivale Prehistoric Settlement (five minutes’ drive) and Ringmoor Stone Circle (25 minutes) or natural attractions like Lydford Gorge (20 minutes) and Haytor Rocks (40 minutes). Foggintor Quarry (15 minutes) is also close by, and the whole area is packed with tors, waterfalls and other intriguing things to scope out. As well as exploring on foot, you may like to try some other outdoor activities – perhaps fishing at Tavistock Trout Fishery or a round at Tavistock Golf Club (both five minutes). The National Trust properties at Buckland Abbey (20 minutes) and Cotehele (half an hour) are good for a wander, with Dartmoor Zoo (40 minutes) also close by for animal-mad families. For a break from your rural surroundings, take a trip to Plymouth (40 minutes) – there’s heaps to do in the city, including the National Marine Aquarium, The Box museum, the Mayflower Museum and tours of England’s oldest working gin distillery.
