Stunning walks over moorland

General

  • Peaceful farm site 10 minutes' drive from North Molton
  • Family-friendly and surfer beaches within a 45-minute drive
  • On the edge of the Exmoor National Park for walks and activities

Birdsong in the morning, lambs bleating by day, starry skies of an evening… sometimes it’s a mighty fine idea to step away from the trappings of modern life and embrace life’s simpler pleasures.

These are among the rural treats served up during a stay at Headgate Farm, on a sheep farm in a secluded spot 10 minutes’ drive from the little village of North Molton. It’s a bijou little site so you’ll be among the few humans here, but there’s plenty of company to be had among the sheep, horses, alpacas, geese and chickens, and a friendly Kunekune pig called Sam.

Bring your boots along, for the farm is right on the edge of the Exmoor National Park, with trails galore and heaps of activities to seek out. You might also want to pack your beach kit (surfboard included if that’s your thing), as it’s only a 40-minute drive to the beaches of Devon’s north coast.

Things you’ll not need to take up car space with include towels and bed linen, as these are ready and waiting in your comfy caravan, which has also been kitted out with a decent-sized kitchen, a large-screen TV and a utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer (and plenty of space for wet boots and coats… just in case). A well-stocked shop and post office are 10 minutes' drive away in the village, as are two pubs for post-activity grub and drinks.

It was a wonderful stay for us and our toddler. The animals made it an immediate attraction for a little child, he absolutely loved it. The hosts were fantastic, very accommodating. The facilities were just what we needed for our stay. Just a great weekend away. Thank you.

The hosts went out of their way to make our stay very pleasant.. they offered us logs, eggs, milk, fresh water, and even helped us when our car wouldn't start up. Really kind people, who look after the farm really well. Facilities were clean and towels and bathrobes were supplied.
The caravan had everything we needed, and more. This included a toaster, oven, hob, fridge, freezer, washing machines, shower, toilet, TV, sofas, tables and chairs, hairdryer and much more.
Beautiful variety of animals present in the farm, and lovely dogs. All animals were kind and friendly around children.
Beautiful scenery , and mountains and beach nearby.

    Disliked:

There were a few spiders in the caravan, which was understandable since we're in nature. The host gave us insect spray to help with this.

Very friendly people who ran it whom kept a clean and tidy site with clean shower/toilet area. Thy provided tea and coffee in the rest room that had a fridge and freezer which was great for the ice packs for my cooler and wood and lighters for the fire pit in the camping area.

loved the that it was way any light pollution as the night sky was awesome!

Bringing my dog wasn’t an issues which was great!

no real complains to make about the site.

nothing the managers can do about this but a points i noted.

access is along the standard Devon single track which could be an issue for larger caravans etc.

other then that i really enjoyed the site and have no negatives to add.

Loved how small and cosy the campsite was, the owners were exceptionally nice, always made sure you were okay and nothing was too much. To top it off you're surrounded in farm life, the donkeys keep you company and you even get to watch the sheep dogs at work in the evenings. Can't say enough good things and will definitely be recommending!

Very friendly owner who introduced us to the animals that were in the neighbouring field. Facilities were clean and tidy. We had the field to ourselves which we had not expected in July and in such a lovely remote location. The dark night sky was fantastic, we will definitely go again.

Local attractions

Exmoor’s the place for some excellent walks so head into the national park for all sorts of trails – long hikes, circular strolls, coastal rambles and a pleasing number of routes that pass by a pub. Those who hanker after a raised adrenaline level can also join mountain biking, climbing and coasteering excursions, while folks who prefer to move at a slower pace can potter around with paddleboards, canoes or kayaks.

There’s a super collection of beaches around here, too – head to Croyde to catch some waves (or learn the secrets of how to do so), take a bucket and spade to Minehead or head to Woolacombe to see what’s previously earned it a spot at the top of the UK’s best beaches list.

For a family day out you may also want to consider The Big Sheep, the Milky Way Adventure Park, Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park, a ride on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway – all are within a 45-minute drive.
