General
- Peaceful farm site 10 minutes' drive from North Molton
- Family-friendly and surfer beaches within a 45-minute drive
- On the edge of the Exmoor National Park for walks and activities
Birdsong in the morning, lambs bleating by day, starry skies of an evening… sometimes it’s a mighty fine idea to step away from the trappings of modern life and embrace life’s simpler pleasures.
These are among the rural treats served up during a stay at Headgate Farm, on a sheep farm in a secluded spot 10 minutes’ drive from the little village of North Molton. It’s a bijou little site so you’ll be among the few humans here, but there’s plenty of company to be had among the sheep, horses, donkeys and chickens, plus several working dogs, a cat and a friendly Kunekune pig called Sam.
Bring your boots along, for the farm is right on the edge of the Exmoor National Park, with trails galore and heaps of activities to seek out. You might also want to pack your beach kit (surfboard included if that’s your thing), as it’s only a 40-minute drive to the beaches of Devon’s north coast.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, it is very much appreciated. I'm very pleased that you liked the location and the donkeys. There is no electricity on the actual camp site, so the possibility of having hot water connected to the open air sink is extremely slim. There is a camp site room with a washing up bowl and a kettle but the walk to it is a little further. With kind regards Jude |

The best route is via North Molton. At the bottom of the village after the bridge, take the second turning on the right and proceed for two miles. When you reach Sunnymead Bungalow on your right, you will see the campsite entrance opposite on the left. Access is through the double wooden gates and a gravel track.
Local attractions
Exmoor’s the place for some excellent walks so head further into the national park for all sorts of trails – long hikes, circular strolls, coastal rambles and a pleasing number of routes that pass by a pub. Those who hanker after a raised adrenaline level can also join mountain biking, climbing and coasteering excursions, while folks who prefer to move at a slower pace can potter around with paddleboards, canoes or kayaks.
There’s a super collection of beaches around here, too – head to Croyde to catch some waves (or learn the secrets of how to do so), take a bucket and spade to Minehead or head to Woolacombe to see what’s previously earned it a spot at the top of the UK’s best beaches list.
For a family day out you may also want to consider The Big Sheep, the Milky Way Adventure Park, Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park or a ride on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway – all are within a 45-minute drive.

Dear Sarah,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, all reviews are much appreciated.
I was concerned for you and pleased that you had highlighted what had happened.
With regard to support, you said what you planned to do and that was not to go walking but to spend the day at the coast with your feet in the sea water, of which I replied that maybe the cold sea water would probably be a very good remedy for your foot. Within half an hour you had left the site for the day and I was unable to see you in the evening as I was away from the farm from late afternoon and did not return home until after dark.
My comment relating to 'that these things happen' was after I had said that something similar happened to me in my vegetable garden a couple of months ago. I certainly wasn't making light of your situation.
I have documented the incident in our accident book and have also dealt with the area, so this wouldn’t be able to happen again.
The above said I hope you managed to get to Dartmoor for a few days after leaving here and all is well.
With kind regards
Jude
