Headgate Farm: horses on the site

General

  • Peaceful farm site 10 minutes' drive from North Molton
  • Family-friendly and surfer beaches within a 45-minute drive
  • On the edge of the Exmoor National Park for walks and activities

Birdsong in the morning, lambs bleating by day, starry skies of an evening… sometimes it’s a mighty fine idea to step away from the trappings of modern life and embrace life’s simpler pleasures.

These are among the rural treats served up during a stay at Headgate Farm, on a sheep farm in a secluded spot 10 minutes’ drive from the little village of North Molton. It’s a bijou little site so you’ll be among the few humans here, but there’s plenty of company to be had among the sheep, horses, donkeys and chickens, plus several working dogs, a cat and a friendly Kunekune pig called Sam.

Bring your boots along, for the farm is right on the edge of the Exmoor National Park, with trails galore and heaps of activities to seek out. You might also want to pack your beach kit (surfboard included if that’s your thing), as it’s only a 40-minute drive to the beaches of Devon’s north coast. A well-stocked shop and post office are 10 minutes' drive away in the village, as are two pubs for post-activity grub and drinks.

Clean... very very clean. The toilets and shower room were spotless. There was also a very nice little club room with chairs and a fridge if needed in cold/wet weather. The owner was very friendly and came around for a little chat. We only stayed for one night, but it was very quiet and very pretty surroundings. I would defo come again... but with a bigger tent; mine was embarrassingly small next its bigger neighbours. Stock up in Tiverton - there is a Lidl and a big Tesco because we really are far away from stuff. I know there is WiFi but I didn't use it.

Roads were a little tight to get here in our converted boxer van - but we managed. Just check your route and allow extra time - it's worth it once you get there.

Local attractions

Exmoor’s the place for some excellent walks so head further into the national park for all sorts of trails – long hikes, circular strolls, coastal rambles and a pleasing number of routes that pass by a pub. Those who hanker after a raised adrenaline level can also join mountain biking, climbing and coasteering excursions, while folks who prefer to move at a slower pace can potter around with paddleboards, canoes or kayaks.

There’s a super collection of beaches around here, too – head to Croyde to catch some waves (or learn the secrets of how to do so), take a bucket and spade to Minehead or head to Woolacombe to see what’s previously earned it a spot at the top of the UK’s best beaches list.

For a family day out you may also want to consider The Big Sheep, the Milky Way Adventure Park, Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park or a ride on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway – all are within a 45-minute drive.
