General
- Peaceful farm site 10 minutes' drive from North Molton
- Family-friendly and surfer beaches within a 45-minute drive
- On the edge of the Exmoor National Park for walks and activities
Birdsong in the morning, lambs bleating by day, starry skies of an evening… sometimes it’s a mighty fine idea to step away from the trappings of modern life and embrace life’s simpler pleasures.
These are among the rural treats served up during a stay at Headgate Farm, on a sheep farm in a secluded spot 10 minutes’ drive from the little village of North Molton. It’s a bijou little site so you’ll be among the few humans here, but there’s plenty of company to be had among the sheep, horses, donkeys and chickens, plus several working dogs, a cat and a friendly Kunekune pig called Sam.
Bring your boots along, for the farm is right on the edge of the Exmoor National Park, with trails galore and heaps of activities to seek out. You might also want to pack your beach kit (surfboard included if that’s your thing), as it’s only a 40-minute drive to the beaches of Devon’s north coast. A well-stocked shop and post office are 10 minutes' drive away in the village, as are two pubs for post-activity grub and drinks.

Local attractions
Exmoor’s the place for some excellent walks so head further into the national park for all sorts of trails – long hikes, circular strolls, coastal rambles and a pleasing number of routes that pass by a pub. Those who hanker after a raised adrenaline level can also join mountain biking, climbing and coasteering excursions, while folks who prefer to move at a slower pace can potter around with paddleboards, canoes or kayaks.
There’s a super collection of beaches around here, too – head to Croyde to catch some waves (or learn the secrets of how to do so), take a bucket and spade to Minehead or head to Woolacombe to see what’s previously earned it a spot at the top of the UK’s best beaches list.
For a family day out you may also want to consider The Big Sheep, the Milky Way Adventure Park, Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park or a ride on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway – all are within a 45-minute drive.

Dear Mr Underwood
Oh dear dear dear, how sad.
Talking to campers to see if everything is OK, answering their many questions, letting them know where there are amazing places to visit does not annoy the majority of people and is called the art of conversation. Maybe if you practiced it on your first day or any other day that you were here, we could have discussed your many many dislikes and I would have been more than happy to your leaving the site and refunding you for the remainder of your stay.
With regard to using the ride on lawn mower to cut the grass (that picks up all the cuttings and does not blow them around) , I'm afraid this has to be done at some stage and is usually carried out in the middle of the day when most campers are off site. It would be lovely if the fairies came out at night and magically did it for me! The fact that you had a roof tent on your car hampered your days out and you were on site for a lot of your time here, which is absolutely fine but I did mention to your wife on that morning that I would be cutting the grass later on that morning/early afternoon for around an hour.
As for your personal comments about me, well how rude but that tells me more about you as a person than it does about me.
Our dog has had full access to our farm for the past 14 years and brings so much joy to many children and adults alike on and off the campsite and he will remain as free as a bird for the rest of his days.
When booking in the future, I would suggest you read exactly what you are booking and its exact location and what is locally available, so you do not disappoint yourself and your family.
The rest of your comments are not worth bothering with but thank you for taking the time to post a review as we can all learn from them.
With kind regards
Jude
