Headgate Farm: Still sleeping, with another long bike ride ahead

General

  • Peaceful farm site 10 minutes' drive from North Molton
  • Family-friendly and surfer beaches within a 45-minute drive
  • On the edge of the Exmoor National Park for walks and activities

Birdsong in the morning, lambs bleating by day, starry skies of an evening… sometimes it’s a mighty fine idea to step away from the trappings of modern life and embrace life’s simpler pleasures.

These are among the rural treats served up during a stay at Headgate Farm, on a sheep farm in a secluded spot 10 minutes’ drive from the little village of North Molton. It’s a bijou little site so you’ll be among the few humans here, but there’s plenty of company to be had among the sheep, horses, donkeys and chickens, plus several working dogs, a cat and a friendly Kunekune pig called Sam.

Bring your boots along, for the farm is right on the edge of the Exmoor National Park, with trails galore and heaps of activities to seek out. You might also want to pack your beach kit (surfboard included if that’s your thing), as it’s only a 40-minute drive to the beaches of Devon’s north coast. A well-stocked shop and post office are 10 minutes' drive away in the village, as are two pubs for post-activity grub and drinks.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Everything was perfect! So much thought has gone into the site, even a little lounge to retreat to in poor weather complete with microwave and kettle. There are fresh eggs for sale too. It's so quiet!, you can't hear any thing other than birds and their donkeys!
The toilets are showers were immaculate at all times.

    Disliked:

It would be great if the dishwasher sink was undercover but they explained that's next on their list of things to do.
The site is on a gentle slope so it's a good idea to take ramps if you're in a van.
Neither of these things are problems really though

We found the site to be a peaceful and relaxing spot away from the hubbub of tourist hotspots elsewhere in the West Country. The camping field is surrounded by the animals of Headgate Farm; the donkeys were especially cute. The site is sloping but we used our levelling ramps to sort that out. Jude, the owner, is friendly and helpful, the facilities are clean and well-maintained. The lounge area for those camping in tents was especially good. Generally, we very much enjoyed our stay here.

    Disliked:

Our SatNav took us up some very tiny lanes to reach this site, so be warned, we ended up with bits of tree stuck in our awning. We found the best way in was via North Molton but perhaps for next season the owner could put something on the website or Pitchup notes with route recommendations and/or routes to avoid.

The owners here saw a way to make money and laid out some pitches for a camp site. But nothing is thought through.

The field want huge and there was around 16 pitches crammed together that were 10m x 10m which seems ok but when you have to be 6m from the next people for social distancing and also have to be 2m aways from the fence so a horse doesn't get you or your things it doesn't leave you with much (especially if you have someone on either side of you like we did). There was no space between each pitch and as for the 2m from the fence rule (yes there are a lot of rules) that should not be taken out of the original pitch size. Another thing that didn't make sense to me is while we were there at one point it was quite empty only being 3 other pitches (others left upon arrival after seeing how crammed in everyone was, how small the pitches were and how much of an incline that gentle slope really was) but after a day or so more booked in but instead of the owners spreading them around the field and making better use of social distancing they crammed everyone together at the top.

There wasn't any clear instruction on what to do when you got there but once on the field you notice an a4 laminated bit of paper in the middle of a pitch with your name on (this is done for every customer and is NOT echo friendly at all) The owners although friendly were at the same time annoying. Everyday the lady came around to clean the loos which was great but then she went around talking at everyone and interrupting their holiday, and all she did was fish for compliments about her camp site and was quite frankly a little snooty. Also be wary of her dog, although yours have to be tied up all of the time and you have to clean up after them (fair enough always do), her's is free to roam as it pleases with no restraints and it's ok for it to wee on your tent and poo in your pitch. The final straw for us was when the lady came and mowed the field on her ride on mower going around all of the tents and other equipment people had laid out, I mean who does that when people are around and trying to relax??? Instead of a peaceful day we had her riding up and down the field disrupting everyone and spraying them with the grass dust which wasn't good for my wife's allergy's. As for the seating and information area, it looked dirty and all of the chairs had horrible stains on them, and the showers were always cold.

Headgate farm is literally the worst camp site I have ever stayed on.

By the way don't let the photos on their website fool you into thinking the site is almost flat, the site is far from 'gently sloping' as they say and more like a hill, if you don't set up right you'll be sleeping against the wall of your tent/camper. Stay anywhere else!!

From the manager...

Dear Mr Underwood

Oh dear dear dear, how sad.

Talking to campers to see if everything is OK, answering their many questions, letting them know where there are amazing places to visit does not annoy the majority of people and is called the art of conversation. Maybe if you practiced it on your first day or any other day that you were here, we could have discussed your many many dislikes and I would have been more than happy to your leaving the site and refunding you for the remainder of your stay.

With regard to using the ride on lawn mower to cut the grass (that picks up all the cuttings and does not blow them around) , I'm afraid this has to be done at some stage and is usually carried out in the middle of the day when most campers are off site. It would be lovely if the fairies came out at night and magically did it for me! The fact that you had a roof tent on your car hampered your days out and you were on site for a lot of your time here, which is absolutely fine but I did mention to your wife on that morning that I would be cutting the grass later on that morning/early afternoon for around an hour.

As for your personal comments about me, well how rude but that tells me more about you as a person than it does about me.

Our dog has had full access to our farm for the past 14 years and brings so much joy to many children and adults alike on and off the campsite and he will remain as free as a bird for the rest of his days.

When booking in the future, I would suggest you read exactly what you are booking and its exact location and what is locally available, so you do not disappoint yourself and your family.

The rest of your comments are not worth bothering with but thank you for taking the time to post a review as we can all learn from them.

With kind regards

Jude

Local attractions

Exmoor’s the place for some excellent walks so head further into the national park for all sorts of trails – long hikes, circular strolls, coastal rambles and a pleasing number of routes that pass by a pub. Those who hanker after a raised adrenaline level can also join mountain biking, climbing and coasteering excursions, while folks who prefer to move at a slower pace can potter around with paddleboards, canoes or kayaks.

There’s a super collection of beaches around here, too – head to Croyde to catch some waves (or learn the secrets of how to do so), take a bucket and spade to Minehead or head to Woolacombe to see what’s previously earned it a spot at the top of the UK’s best beaches list.

For a family day out you may also want to consider The Big Sheep, the Milky Way Adventure Park, Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park or a ride on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway – all are within a 45-minute drive.
