General

  • Peaceful farm site 10 minutes' drive from North Molton
  • Family-friendly and surfer beaches within a 45-minute drive
  • On the edge of the Exmoor National Park for walks and activities

Birdsong in the morning, lambs bleating by day, starry skies of an evening… sometimes it’s a mighty fine idea to step away from the trappings of modern life and embrace life’s simpler pleasures.

These are among the rural treats served up during a stay at Headgate Farm, on a sheep farm in a secluded spot 10 minutes’ drive from the little village of North Molton. It’s a bijou little site so you’ll be among the few humans here, but there’s plenty of company to be had among the sheep, horses, donkeys, alpacas, geese and chickens, plus a dog, a cat and a friendly Kunekune pig called Sam.

Bring your boots along, for the farm is right on the edge of the Exmoor National Park, with trails galore and heaps of activities to seek out. You might also want to pack your beach kit (surfboard included if that’s your thing), as it’s only a 40-minute drive to the beaches of Devon’s north coast.

Things you’ll not need to take up car space with include towels and bed linen, as these are ready and waiting in your comfy caravan, which has also been kitted out with a decent-sized kitchen, a large-screen TV and a utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer (and plenty of space for wet boots and coats… just in case). A well-stocked shop and post office are 10 minutes' drive away in the village, as are two pubs for post-activity grub and drinks.

We loved our stay at this camp,we have a 13yr old daughter and a 7 yr old daughter and 3 dogs,
The pitch is fairly small but we liked that, the kids loved all the animals as it's on a working farm.
The toilets and showers are really clean, and there is a small fridge freezer to store your cool things. There are also fresh eggs everyday
    At a small cost.
We really enjoyed the communal campfire
Were we sat and toasted smores and meet other campers.
Judy the owner was a gem, couldn't do enough to make us welcome and our stay enjoyable.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 night stay at Headgate Farm. The little ones loved the animals and the space to run around, made new friends with other kids on the site and had fun toasting marshmallows together at the fire pit on the site.
The owner, Judy, was so attentive, welcoming and accommodating. She created a lovely place with wonderful atmosphere here at the Headgate Farm.
We were so lucky to have stayed during the beautiful weather, which obviously made our holidays even more enjoyable.
The facilities were adequate to the size of the campsite (which isn’t big, about 10-13 pitches), two toilets and a shower in the shower/reception block as well as the chemical toilets right on the site. Those were always kept clean and tidy. There is also a sink and a tap for doing your washing up/getting your water.
The free range eggs available to buy on site were so yummy and perfect for a delicious and wholesome breakfast, setting us perfectly for a day full of adventures.
The campsite is located by the Exmoor Park, about 45min drive to the coast and the most stunning wild beach we’ve had a chance to see, the Broad Sands Beach, right next to Coombe Martin. Another great beach to explore, also about 45-60min drive from the campsite is the famous Saunton Sands.
We felt so rested and rejuvenated after our stay, highly recommended!

This site is not suitable for larger motorhomes, anything larger than a standard van, and the owners should state that on the site. The entrance to the site is quite steep 10% gradient and the site itself is all sloping and rather small making it difficult to level. If its raining or the site is wet, forget about it.

Judy was a fantastic host very welcoming. Always there to help even at 20.30 when you need some extra logs for the the fire. The site is clean and tidy Judy is always busy doing something but never to busy to answer any questions. We was called to be advised that the site was wet and what we should do when we arrive. The site is about 30-40 from a town with all the big shops if needed. The site is peaceful & quiet and the animals are friendly.

    Disliked:

Local attractions

Exmoor’s the place for some excellent walks so head into the national park for all sorts of trails – long hikes, circular strolls, coastal rambles and a pleasing number of routes that pass by a pub. Those who hanker after a raised adrenaline level can also join mountain biking, climbing and coasteering excursions, while folks who prefer to move at a slower pace can potter around with paddleboards, canoes or kayaks.

There’s a super collection of beaches around here, too – head to Croyde to catch some waves (or learn the secrets of how to do so), take a bucket and spade to Minehead or head to Woolacombe to see what’s previously earned it a spot at the top of the UK’s best beaches list.

For a family day out you may also want to consider The Big Sheep, the Milky Way Adventure Park, Exmoor Zoo, Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park or a ride on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway – all are within a 45-minute drive.
