Fire Beacon Camping: Visitor image of the view from the site

General

  • Peaceful wild campsite with views of Devon countryside near Sidmouth
  • A 20-minute drive to Branscombe beach; 25 minutes from Exmouth
  • Just off the East Devon Way and close to the South West Coast Path

In a rural setting in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Fire Beacon Camping is a fabulous location for a countryside escape. If you’re after total peace and the chance to contemplate the moonrise and sunset, then this is the place for you. And thanks to the lack of light pollution in this secluded spot, after dark on clear nights you’ll be treated to glittering starry skies.

All this on offer, and yet you’re only 10 minutes’ drive from the beach at Sidmouth. Hikers, listen up – it’s also a 15-minute walk to the East Devon Way, which connects with circular woodland footpaths around the campsite. Serious walkers can join up with the South West Coast Path at Sidmouth.

Cyclists have it good round here too, with the challenging River Exe Loop and family bike routes along the Otter river both less than 15 minutes’ drive away. You can be practising your tennis serve or golf swing in less than 20 minutes, or take an indoor dip at LED Sidmouth Swimming Pool on the occasional rainy day.

There are plenty of pubs, tea shops and restaurants in seaside towns like Budleigh Salterton (20 minutes' drive) and Exmouth (25 minutes), but Sidmouth is your best bet for independent shops and supermarket shopping if you need to stock up. If you'd like to support local businesses, there are also several farm shops in the surrounding area.

Please note

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

The most beautiful basic eco friendly campsite. Compost toilets, outdoor shower, washing up area with eco friendly cleaning products. Owned by a lovely couple who are super friendly, we can't wait to go and camp again.

A beautiful campsite, run by friendly folk, who care for their environment in the way they practice their business, from providing pollutant free detergents, composting toilets and water saving measures. They also have a wonderful range of fire pits that you can use, as well as selling a bag of wood and kindling, which made for a very cosy camp.

    Disliked:

I couldn’t get the water to run warm in the shower but, as with all showers there’s a knack, which if I had stayed more than 2 nights I might have mastered!

Directions

From the A3052 Exeter to Sidmouth road, turn at The Bowd Inn towards Ottery St Mary. Immediately after the pub turn right into Fire Beacon lane.
After 150m, the lane takes a sharp left, follow this single-track lane for approximately 1.5 miles. Please drive with caution along this lane and be prepared to reverse. You will pass the driveway to Badgers Rest (EX10 0LR) on the right hand side, continue slightly up and then down the hill. We are at the top of the next Public Bridleway on your left.

Local attractions

Treat the kids to a day on the splash rides and mini-trains at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (20 minutes' drive) or try out the dumper rides at Diggerland Devon (25 minutes). Meanwhile everyone – even grumpy teens – is likely to love meeting the residents at The Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes).

For bucket-and-spade days, Budleigh Salterton and Branscombe (both 20 minutes) have long shingle beaches for kicking about in the waves, while Sandy Bay beach (30 minutes) is a fab spot for windsurfing, rock pooling and swimming – there are lifeguards on duty in summer.

One of the National Trust’s strangest properties is close by – A La Ronde (25 minutes) is a bizarre 16-sided house with interiors swathed in shells. Delightful Beer (20 minutes) has a fishing harbour, ice-cream shops and indie art galleries to potter around, and Sidmouth (10 minutes) has a lively cultural scene too, with a theatre and cinema, as well as summer concerts and festivals on the prom.
