  • Small but spacious site overlooking the Devon coast
  • Five minutes' walk from local bus service to Exeter and Bournemouth
  • Exmoor ponies, sheep, chicken and ducks on site
The clue is in the name – a holiday at Coombe View Farm will guarantee some of the best sea and countryside views east Devon has to offer. Oh, and it just so happens to be a farm too so there really is plenty to entice anyone here to pay a visit. This small but spacious site overlooks the Devonshire coast and is the perfect spot to get your fill of sea air and seriously special scenery. It has level ground and custom-made pathways for driving around, along with oodles of green grass so kids can run about and play safely. It may be rural, but you can still take advantage of the local bus service which runs between Exeter and Bournemouth (hop aboard at the stop just a five-minute walk along the lane). The campsite has no bar, no clubhouse, nor nightly entertainment, but with campfires allowed and a haven of wildlife on your doorstep (along with the handy amenities block with loos and showers, a washing-up area and disabled facilities), this is good old quiet camping in a beautiful natural setting which makes for a truly relaxing retreat. Bring on the marshmallows... Exmoor ponies, a small flock of sheep, geese and an array of chickens on site are waiting for a visit from guests. Grab your binoculars because the hedgerows and fields surrounding the site also make a convenient home for an array of winged types for you to get your beak spotting too. Wifi is available on the farm but not guaranteed because it is in a rural location without fibre.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (backpacker, no cars, two person)

Liked: I stayed one night as part of a small bikepacking group and felt very well looked after. We were given our own area of grass to camp on away from vehicles which was close to amenities. We cycled part of the east Devon trail and loved it. Very good value

Disliked: A bit of noise from other campers late at night who were up drinking and shouting

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: Location, proximity to coast.

Disliked: Recent visit with four families. Site is basic. Pitched next to busy road with limited sea views and adequate facilities. Could do with some improvement to groundworks, potholes, low amp electrics, cobwebs etc. Was a pleasant enough experience until 3rd evening. Female member of staff behaved in a disgusting manner. Returned from an afternoon offsite, to be approached by a speeding/revving golf buggy. Since learned that while speeding she shouted at my 9 year old to ‘get out the way’, without slowing down. She then jumped out, screaming and gesticulating rudely, repeating herself and refusing to engage in any sort of civility. Whilst responding, her behaviour was highlighted as unnecessary & disproportionate. She continued ranting and raving, “who do you think you are, using my land, this is your final warning, leave or I’ll call the police’ &falsely claiming to be intimated by a member of our party, laughable given her conduct. This left all the children in our party distressed, several in tears and terrified. It ended by her sat in the cart radioing, within earshot, to tell other staff that her approach ‘may have been a bit firm’, before returning to the office. Thus within minutes she was offered the demanded payment- which she then declined to accept, did rescind on previous accusations/threats and offered an excuse about a past set of campers, that supposedly warranted this approach to customer relations! For transparency, our offences were 1) Using a pop up goal, on an adjacent bit of grassland behind our pitch, so as not to disturb any other campers (which was flimsily roped off, indicating no vehicular access but with absolutely no signage or communication to suggest it couldn’t be stepped onto and was entered by many other campers). Goal had already been up for 24 hours+ with an older man patrolling the site in an unmarked car, plus golf buggy coming & going with new arrivals over a busy bank holiday weekend. There was no interaction or concerns raised at any point during this or when members of our party had asked unrelated questions in passing. She went berserk when we suggested that based on this, we had no idea it was a problem, but would gladly take it down in a process that would take approx. 5 mins. And 2) a gazebo, put up in the rain that morning (on our own pitch) after a previous telephone enquiry, that confirmed we could bring and pay for this, on a ‘need to basis’. We were not due to check out until the following morning, so payment was expected, but not urgent. Absolutely none of this warranted anymore than a polite request. Never-mind shouting ‘you should have asked’ multiple times and wildly denying that we in-fact, already had. For further context, see images & website invitation to enjoy nature at a traditional peaceful campsite, ‘with plenty of space for kids to play’, alongside examples of other direct signage used on site. There was no ponies or poultry. Sheep are in a fenced off field, beyond the offending grassland, so you are inevitably not welcome to approach or ‘make friends’, as advertised. That evening, the man patrolling continued, speaking to us for the first time, quite bizarrely asking if we were enjoying our stay. He did state that we were welcome to ignore stipulated check out time as ‘they were not busy’, so there would be no need to rush off in accordance with stated rules. Whilst appreciated, this applied to all & was not a veiled apology to our group. Interestingly, we had been approached by another family on arrival and warned about negative staff attitude, but ourselves found it to be pleasant/normal (hands-off approach), until this shocking outburst. If you are considering booking here, do note several other reviews that indicate an ongoing theme. As seasoned campers, this was a terrible experience and I strongly suggest that families AVOID this site. I do not recommend, due to the risk of harassment. Would not return if paid to.

Liked: Oh my what can I say. What a great site to stay at. Linzi was amazing from the moment we arrived. It was my sister and I long family catch up with my other sister and her family just down the road in ottery. The campsite was perfect, we arrived just after 4pm and Linzi showed us around. The site has fresh water to drink, wash up area, plenty of toilet facilities and 3 showers that was very hot. We where concerned about the site getting busier as they were due over 40people and only 3 showers, but we had no problems at all. There is sheep in the other field and plenty of birds singing to wake you up. The sea view is so good, i didnt get down to the beach but have heard that seaton is worth a visit. I would definitely be back again when I'm down this way again.

Disliked: The place is great, but if im being fussy, maybe the path between the road and the site carpark could do with a fill-in as it's very deep. There are mats, but they do move.

Liked: Leaving

Disliked: Won’t stay again. Host made it a very unwelcome stay. They got very angry at other guests (we didn’t know them) and started swearing at them. Toilets and showers are in a shed.

From the manager: We are sorry you didn't enjoy your stay at coombe view farm the member of staff has been spoken to regarding this issue but unfortunately the people concerned has burnt the grass when having a camp fire when they where clearly told all fires should be off the ground or use a fire pit. Our websites state our showers and toilets and basins are very basic but have plenty of hot running water at all times and are cleaned on a regular basis .

Satnavs do not always bring guests to the correct location. If you start to travel downhill, that's the incorrect way. Do not turn down Locksey's Lane. Take the next turning, which is adjacent to it. Local attractions

Branch out to the village of Branscombe with its pretty beach, just one and half miles from the campsite. Thatched cottages, a working Norman forge and Saint Winifred church make a day out in Branscombe a mightily interesting one. If you’re after a trusty ale or a plentiful helping of hearty pub grub after a day meandering through the scenic village and brushing up on your Devonshire history, then good news - Branscome is sandwiched between two pubs serving the like. The well-looked after Jurassic Coast shingle beach has rockpools for kids to dive into exploring. With fishing trips available, a picnic area and a café serving ice creams on the beachfront too, all in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, everyone’s sure to have a splashing time… Step out on a coastal walk along the footpaths from Branscombe to the fishing village at Beer, just two miles away and with fresh fish available to buy on the sheltered beach to take back for the campfire too. There’s a unmissable all-day brekkie to be had at one of the village’s popular cafés, perfect for prepping you for a guided tour around this history-rich smuggling haven. Can’t decide where to start? Choo-choose a trip to the model railway attraction, Pecorama, to keep the kids entertained with gardens, games and train rides. For a more demanding stroll, around seven miles westward you’ll reach the resort of Sidmouth. If you can drag yourself from a deckchair on the pebbly beach, take a peek at the town’s church with its stained-glass window donated by Queen Victoria herself - it’s a royally pretty sight. While you’re up, climb the 500-foot Peak Hill to enjoy a panorama of the area too - one won’t be disappointed with the view. Music lovers - take a trip in August to have yourselves a merry time at the town’s folk festival. You’re never short of a coastline to explore around here: other seaside towns close by include Seaton (an hour’s walk or 10-minute car journey), home to the Axe Yacht Club. Hop aboard the tram here to take in the views of the estuary - twitchers, don’t forget your binos. Exeter is also just 45 minutes by car to the east. The popular university and cathedral city is home to shopping and dining galore, as well as indoor climbing and bowling centres (perfect for rainy days) and a street food market, cycling and canoeing opportunities (for the sunnier ones). A trip to these parts wouldn’t be complete without a scoop (or few) of Devonshire clotted cream dolloped on a fruit-strewn scone, and with the choice of restaurants and eateries in Exeter, you’re sure to be able to trial and test some of the best.
