  • Relaxed and simple off-grid site a mile from South Milton Sands
  • A 10-minute drive to Salcombe or Hope Cove; 45 minutes to Plymouth
  • Spacious pitches with dogs welcome and firepits for hire
Simple pitches, a superb atmosphere and splendid views are the hallmarks of South Devon Camping, a relaxed off-grid campsite on a working farm in the South Hams area. The location of this site is a real winner – it’s the closest campsite to gorgeous South Milton Sands, so you can walk down there in about 15 minutes for days on the long stretch of soft sand, or stroll down for sunset. There are places to eat by the beach and elsewhere within walking distance too, and more over in Salcombe (10 minutes’ drive away). No doubt you’ll not be surprised to hear that loyal guests often return here year after year… Life on site is fairly straightforward, with a focus on the essentials rather than lots of fancy facilities. Grass pitches are spacious at 10 square metres each, and they have access to coin-operated hot showers, eco toilets, a washing-up area and communal fridge-freezers. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, as are firepits (which you can bring along or hire on site), but please do not bring disposable barbecues as these are not allowed on site. Free USB phone charging is available. As for days out nearby, they’re likely to revolve around the coast – stay here and you’ll be close to the South West Coast Path and all sorts of activities like kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding. Elsewhere, Dartmouth, Totnes and Plymouth are all options for alternative days out, or you could head inland towards Dartmoor National Park.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really well organised campsite with excellent hot showers. Dog friendly and so close to the beach! Beautiful sheep and goats. Very kid friendly with lots of children playing in both fields. The Rock Box by the beach is fab too - thanks for the recommendation!

Disliked Rude and dangerous drivers on the road to the beach - not the campsites fault AT ALL but just noting to take care as you walk to the beach as they zoom by like it’s a race track and despite being as tucked into the hedge as possible we were clipped by 2 cars passing at speed on the tiny, tiny little lane. Would be grateful if dog owners were allowed to use the safe route to the beaches through the marsh - obviously with dogs on leads!

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful, peaceful location with all the needed facilities and more. Provided with a fire pit for bonfire which was very handy.

Disliked Not super friendly for pram walks to nearby pubs etc, but not end of world as only a 3 min drive.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked We've just had a wonderful weekend stay in our VW camper at South Devon Camping. Its a really lovely informal (yet highly organised) small site with a relaxing atmosphere located in a beautiful area with lots of immediate footpath access to the local village, beach and coast path. The owners are very friendly and Anita's detailed notes really helped in getting the most out of the surrounding area.
All the facilities are provided with great thought and care with a view to being as low impact as possible and there are lots of little touches which add to the overall impression (ie fresh flowers in the compositing loos/USB phone chargers/dog poo bags/seashell & pebble amnesty bucket).
I think that this is probably the best run campsite we have ever stayed on which is remarkable given how relaxed and informal it is and how little overt regulation there is.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Feels like old fashioned camping, a little hidden gem! Lots of space to run around for our children, well maintained. The compost loo’s were always clean along with showers and washing up facilities. We pitched up Friday and didn’t move our van until Sunday as the beach is only a 15minute walk away. Really lovely owners who brought wood (and change) right to the pitch. A real mix of groups, families and couples but everyone was super respectful and the site was quiet by 10pm ish.
We’ll definitely be back

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Loved the whole 24 hours of a 6 day holiday but sadly cut short as the weather was shocking!! Stayed in the car with hubby and 2children second night as the storm collapsed our shelter and soaked our tent. Didn’t know rain came upwards and sideways hahah. Beautiful site though and can’t wait to come back and try it again. Depending on weather that is lol many thanks Nicola buckland xx stayed 31/7/23

From the manager: Hi Nicola ! Thank you for writing such a lovely review which means even more given that you had such a terrible time with the storm that came in. I'm so sorry that your holiday was cut short so soon into your stay. I'm so pleased though that you are determined to come back at some point and have a holiday with us when the sun is shining. I hope you've managed to dry out now. Hopefully the sun will come out in August and you can enjoy the rest of the summer. Best wishes Anita
