General

  • Luxury fully-equipped log cabin overlooking the South Hams
  • Close to several beaches and 15 minutes from Dartmoor
  • Observatory, one-acre lawn and barbecue

You might figure you could live here all year round... Yealm Cabin is a log cabin on its own overlooking the Yealm Valley in the spectacular South Hams, is minutes from beaches so beaut they've been used in film sets, and is fully equipped with all you'd need for a self-catering holiday lasting several months.

It even accepts up to five dogs per stay (bring a blankie if you’re letting them up on the furniture), so no excuse for not going out for walkies all around: Dartmoor is just 15 minutes away.

You might want to stick around for a bit too for some starry gazing: Yealm Cabin is in an area of no light pollution and has its own observatory where guests can book an appointment to sky gaze with a local astronomy expert. (That’s what you call astronomically good service.)

The observatory is on the site’s one-acre lawn for the kids to cartwheel around at, and has tables and chairs for the more Siriusly-minded grownups to soak up the sun, as well as a barbecue for alfresco cooking. Cosmic.

Yealm Cabin sleeps up to five in a double bedroom, double sofa bed and single camp bed, and has an open plan dining and living room with glass doors so you can drink in the hill and field views while drinking your morning coffee or evening wine. A shower, toilet and wash area are a few steps away from the main bedroom through a private courtyard.

From the lawn, plough along the lane through woodland to get to Yealmpton five minutes away (bring your wellies) and reach a restaurant and a couple of friendly pubs serving food. There are also several shops and a farm shop, to pick up ingredients for a late Devon cream tea or barbecue back at base under the stars.

The person making the booking must be over 18 years of age.

Local attractions

In the South Hams, a few miles from south Devon beaches and about seven miles from Plymouth, Yealm Cabin is a stellar spot for Devon-based sightseeing, watersports, village hopping, city slicking, antique hunting, first-class restaurants, sauntering along the seriously scenic South West Coast Path and several holidays’ worth more. With several holidays’ worth of cream teas, freshly caught fish and pints of trad Devon ale along the way, of course…

The South Hams has four main towns – Ivybridge three miles from Yealm Cabin; Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth – and a few dozen villages to explore, snap the eighteenth and nineteenth century architecture, and buy antiques, crafts, handmade jewellery and cream teas with locally grown strawberries.

For eats, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Newton Ferrers, Noss Mayo, Modbury and many surrounding villages have award-winning pubs and restaurants serving up traditional Devon food made from the freshest ingredients as well as more worldly menus from the Mediterranean, Africa and Asia.

Miles of country paths start from the doorstep of the Yealm Cabin site along the River Erme, where fisherfolk hang out too to land salmon and trout. The South West Coast Path’s 630 miles meander around these parts too: drive to Plymouth and take the Waterfront Walkway to Wembury Point, stopping off at the Wembury Marine Centre for rockpooling expeditions in the summer months, or have an easy access walk across Bolberry Down or from Start Point, both near Salcombe.

Inland, the Two Moors Way runs from Ivybridge to Lynmouth in Exmoor, and connects to other walking trails including the Tarka Trail and the Dartmoor Way.

Beaches for combing, surfing and sunbathing are a few minutes’ drive from Yealm Cabin: the closest in Mothercombe three miles away where Sense and Sensibility was filmed (Jane fans can detour to see nearby Saltram House, the Georgian mansion sensibly used in the film too).

It’s a private stretch and only open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, so if you want to dip your toes on another day or try some Devon surf, make for Bigbury close by, which is open all week and has surfing lessons and a beach shop.
