Drakes View: Great views

General

  • Pick your own pitch at a Devon pop-up site with coastal views
  • Bovisand beach five minutes' drive; central Plymouth 20 minutes
  • Views over the Plymouth Sound; South West Coast Path 0.25 miles

Pick your own pitch and get a load of the local landscape at Drakes View, a basic pop-up site in Devon with spectacular views over the Plymouth Sound.

Located just 20 minutes' drive to the east of the city centre near the small village of Bovisand (and five minutes' drive from Bovisand beach), Drakes View is all about keeping it simple. No flashy facilities or complicated set-up here: just a small number of grass pitches without toilets, showers of waste-disposal facilities (essentials like water are taken care of, though).

After gazing out over the cliffs and coves that make this part of Devon's coastline so scenic, you can head out for strolls along the South West Coast Path a quarter of a mile from the site, or amble through the green countryside of the nearby South Hams, where all sorts of footpaths lie in wait.

It's not all about the scenery, though. This site is also a practical option, being within a mile and a half of pubs, cafés and the various facilities around Plymouth Yacht Haven. Getting around by public transport is possible at Drakes View too, as this well-connected site is just under a mile from a local bus stop.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Group bookings of 2 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Minimum spacing of 6 metres between pitches.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Hello, thank you for your review. However there is a water supply point at the end of the red brick bungalow. If I saw you I would have mentioned it, apologies if I did not. Cheers.

    Great location and views

Very noisy. The workshop right next to the pitches was cutting large logs with heavy machinery all day Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 am. We were told that the site owner was warned about this weeks in advance but he didn't bother mentioning it to us before taking our money. Totally spoiled our weekend as we were disturbed early and had to be elsewhere all day. We texted the campsite number and were told the owner would be advised of our complaint, but we never heard back from him.

From the manager...

Sorry you were disturbed during the day. We were full and had no complaints from anyone else. The noise had finished before 4.30pm and I didn't think it would be a problem. I can offer you a free pass if you want to stay again, the log cutting was a one off and I apologise.

Local attractions

With the coast so close by, it’s only natural that the beach might be your first port of call, but which cove first? Well, there’s splendid swimming (and snorkelling if you’ve got the gear for it) at Bovisand beach (five minutes' drive) or kitesurfing and windsurfing activities at the stunning sandy beach at Bigbury-on-Sea (40 minutes) will give you some top views of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

In Plymouth, paddles might come in the form of a trip to the salt-water Tinside Lido (20 minutes) in the harbour… relax on the sun deck afterwards or take yourself off into Central Plymouth (20 minutes) for shopping in the Barbican’s historic quarter or the bigger shopping centre.

With Dartmoor Zoo (25 minutes) for animal fans and the National Trust’s Saltram Park (15 minutes) for cycles on the grounds of a Georgian mansion, there are lots of activities for all types of tastes. Dartmoor National Park (25 minutes) has a splendid combo too, this time of valleys, moorlands and the river Dart, so take out a canoe or cycle along the many trails around the national park.

  • National Marine Aquarium (1.6 miles)
  • Dartmoor Zoological Park (7.0 miles)
