  • Simple grass campsite on a farm near Ottery St Mary in east Devon
  • A 15-minute drive to Sidmouth beach and Crealy Theme Park and Resort
  • Welcome hampers can be pre-booked; a well-stocked farm shop on site
Beach lovers, families, walkers and cyclists – you’re all welcome at Knights Farm for a relaxed break with a back-to-basics vibe. The peaceful grass pitches at this working farm in the hamlet of Fluxton, east Devon, is close to beaches like Sidmouth (15 minutes’ drive) and Branscombe (25 minutes), the South West Coast Path (15 minutes) and numerous cycling trails. A word of warning: as this is almost-wild camping, there are no toilets or electrical points on site, so please bring loo amenities and a torch for moving around after dark with you. Tempting as it is to spend days chilling at your tent, there is much to be done on the farm, with walks through extensive fields to see cows and sheep grazing in surrounding paddocks (no dogs are allowed, due to the presence of livestock) and the chance to glimpse the daily routine of farm life. There’s a well-stocked farm shop where you can buy home-reared meat to grill on the barbecue (again – bring kit with you) and top up on fresh milk. You can also source fruit, veg and locally sourced artisan ginger beer, bread and honey, as well as order takeaway hot drinks to enjoy in the communal, undercover living area.

Local attractions

If you’re travelling with kids, there’s no shortage of options for day trips. They can feed and cuddle rescue donkeys at The Donkey Sanctuary (20 minutes’ drive), and work off energy on the rollercoasters at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (15 minutes). If that doesn’t tire them out, how about running around in the maze at Wildwood Escot (10 minutes)? You’re never short of a new beach to explore, from sandy Sidmouth (15 minutes) and its waterspouts amenities to the pebble stretch at Budleigh Salterton (20 minutes). Nearby there are other pockets of sand at Branscombe (25 minutes), Salcombe Regis (15 minutes) and Ladram Bay (20 minutes). Walkers can access the South West Coast Path at Peak Hill (15 minutes), leading along the Devon coastline, taking in clifftop walks and dramatic beach or cove views, while there are gentler walks inland along the River Otter from Ottery St Mary (five minutes), suitable for younger kids. If you’d rather explore the area on two wheels, a looped ride starting from West Hill (10 minutes by bike) leads to the Exe Estuary (one hour and 15 minutes).
