  • Peaceful site spread over 30 acres of Devon countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from Sidmouth or Budleigh Salterton beaches
  • Firepit, outdoor social area and old dairy with shared kitchen
Looking for plenty of space for your hols out in the fresh air? Head to Higher Holcombe and settle down among the woodland glades and wildflower meadows in this splendid slice of Devon countryside. Many a deer, rabbit and badger pass through this remote spot, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled as you wander through the park, especially around sundown… This former smallholding is superbly set up for sociable stays: a smartly renovated milking parlour houses a spacious shared kitchen – with a dishwasher, so no need to scrub plates – where you can prep group meals (and eat them, if you need protection from the elements). The old dairy's also home to a ping pong table and has views over the lush paddock and meadow. On fine evenings, with a glass of something suitable in hand, Higher Holcombe's firepit is the place to be. The surrounding outdoor social area has ample seating and festival-style festoon lighting in the trees to add to the chilled vibe of this cosy corner. Off-site trips are also a breeze: head to the beaches at Sidmouth or Budleigh Salterton (both 20 minutes' drive) for coastal capers close by. If you need to stock up or fancy letting someone else take care of dinner for the night, swing by Ottery St Mary (five minutes from base) where there are plenty of well-stocked shops and top-rated pubs (the folk at Higher Holcombe recommend the Rusty Pig and the Lamb and Flag).

Local attractions

Need to get your fix of fuzzy animals? The Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes' drive) is home to hundreds of rescued and retired beats of burden of all shapes and sizes. For kid-orientated days out, head to Wildwood Escot (10 minutes), another nearby animal park; there are also zipwires, mazes and all manner of swings and slides here to keep visiting tiddlers busy.  The long-gone monsters of the Jurassic Coast are also within easy reach: make tracks to Lyme Regis for its Ammonite Terrace and impressive fossil museums, or get stuck in and do some digging of your own on the beaches around Charmouth (40 minutes). For alfresco swims, head down to the river Otter (a few minutes from base) or to the coast at Sidmouth (20 minutes). Other coastal towns of note include Seaton with its vintage tramway (25 minutes), Budleigh Salterton with its gorgeous quartzite pebbles (20 minutes) and Beer with its white cliffs and miniature train (20 minutes).
