Forest Edge: Sheltered pitch

General

  • Wild camping-style Devon site five minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Sidmouth and Seaton beaches
  • Dog-friendly site with firepit and logs; pub less than a mile away

Almost-wild camping is the name of the game at Forest Edge, a rural Devon site that’s got a relaxed, peaceful vibe but with the bonus of basic facilities including toilets and showers.

The site is surrounded by 30 acres of particularly gorgeous rural scenery and is located within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so you should have plenty of space to soak up the countryside air around here. That’s not to say it’s out of the way though: in fact, it’s only about five minutes’ drive from towns like Honiton, Ottery St Mary and Sidbury. There are lots of local attractions nearby too, and it’s a 15-minute drive to the south coast at Sidmouth or Seaton for a splash in the sea.

Dogs and barbecues are both welcome at this laidback site; there’s a firepit for guests to use, with logs available on site as well. An excellent country pub is less than a mile away if you fancy sampling the local ales, and there are plenty of forest walks and bike trails nearby if you feel like it'd be a good move to offset those drinks with a spot of outdoor exercise.

Please note

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.

Very friendly couple that run the site. Nothing too much trouble and really made me feel welcome.

Site is basic, but that was just what I wanted as self sufficient in motorhome. Was left to my own device's which was also what I wanted, but knew if I had any concerns that they would be dealt with promptly, of which I had none.

Area was very scenic with fantastic views. Was very quite at night.

A big bonus for me was that I got a very good 4g signal for mobile phone so streaming TV was great.

All in all a brilliant stay, will be using again in the near future as the price was superb. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to stay in this part of the country.

Thank you for a great stay.

We very much enjoyed our stay here, the children had plenty of room to ride their bikes and let off steam. Andy and Sarah were fantastic hosts, very friendly and accommodating, we had fresh water on arrival and offered WiFi. The toilets were exceptionally clean and smelt fresh, I could see that Sarah regularly did checks on these, which is fab when you have children using them!
There are fantastic walks in the surrounding area, Sarah and Andy also recommended some fab places to visit locally.
Overall a great value for money, stress free stay. we will certainly be returning again, hopefully next month.

Andy and Sarah the owners are very helpful, and can't do enough to make your stay an excellent experience. The added bonus of fire pits to hire, is a lovely touch to the end of the day. Would highly recommend this site for a peaceful and relaxed holiday. Thankyou Andy and Sarah

Local attractions

The chance to see friendly fuzzy animals is always a big perk of coming to the countryside, and here you're in with plenty of opportunities to do just that. The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes' drive) has obvious appeal with its shaggy herd, café and lovely spacious grounds, while the outdoor activities like alpaca trekking at similarly nearby Bearhouse Alpacas (10 minutes) are likely to prove popular too.

Family-focused itineraries might want to include a trip on Seaton's vintage tramway (15 minutes) and visits to the assorted rides and slides at Crealy Theme Park (20 minutes). But there's a lot more for families to do here, from exploring the Beer Quarry Caves (15 minutes) to seeing the exotic species at Wildwood Escot animal park (10 minutes).

A little further away there's even more to explore, including A La Ronde (30 minutes), a gorgeous National Trust property with leafy gardens, or, for something a touch more urban, Exeter city centre (an hour) with its cathedral, shopping opportunities, restaurants and quayside walks.

Must see

  • Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site (5.0 miles)
  • Crealy Great Adventure Park (8.7 miles)
  • The National Trust Killerton House & Gardens (10.2 miles)

National Trust

  • Branscombe: the Old Bakery, Manor Mill and Forge (6.0 miles)
  • Shute Barton (7.5 miles)
