  • 'Nothing but nature' camping on the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Okehampton; Exeter 35 minutes
  • Under a mile from a working dairy farm with tours and fresh ice cream
'Nothing but nature camping' is how the owners of The Meadow describe their site, and a quick look at the gorgeous photos of this wildlife haven in Devon will show you why. Located near the small village of Sampford Courtenay and a 10-minute drive from the popular town of Okehampton, this is a place where you can pitch up next to wildflowers, butterflies and lots of other wildlife. After dark, keep an eye (and an ear) out for the elusive resident barn owl, who likes to hunt in this pristine habitat. The facilities here are in keeping with The Meadow's wild approach, so there's only running water (housed in a wooden hut) and a composting toilet (with baby changing facilities). A communal firepit is a short walk from the pitches so you're sure to stay toasty and warm even after sunset. The site's owners also run a dairy herd less than a mile down the road, so don't hesitate to book a farm tour and learn more about their nature-friendly methods (bottles of Jersey milk and tasty homemade ice cream are available too).

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nothing.

Disliked: Campsite wasn't ready. Ground was waterlogged. Sometimes this can't be helped but you should remove your listing if the ground is not ready. Toilet was unusable as it was full to the brim of sawdust. Communal campfire was overgrown and just a puddle in the ground. Didn't even bother staying in the end. I like a wild camping sites usually but this was just a waterlogged overgrown field with junk spotted around it. Would definitely check this out before you book.

From the manager: Hi there, sorry you felt this way about our site. We would have been happy to address some of this if you’d let us know on the afternoon when you arrived and we spoke to you. Your booking was very last minute (34 minutes between booking and arrival) and we weren’t really expecting campers with the diabolically wet weather we are all experiencing at present.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Just as described (which is important). Large and flat (also important!) area and no allocated pitches. Simply choose your spot. Friendly host who introduced himself the next morning to check I had everything I needed. I cycled 2 miles to a nearby village to explore. North Tawton has decent amenities. Pubs, shops, cafes and gelato. The communal fire pit is a great idea!

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

With Dartmoor National Park in view from the campsite, it'll come as no surprise that there are some fantastic walks nearby. One popular option is the Granite Way, a cycle route that starts down in Okehampton (10 minutes' drive). Before or after your bike ride, you can relax in the town's popular Simmons Park, take a trip to see its castle or make use of the pool and gym at the leisure centre. For a few hours by or on the water, make tracks for Roadford Lake (30 minutes), where Roadford Activity Centre has lots of watersports (kayaking, canoeing, sailing etc.) and land-based activities (archery, high ropes, climbing) to suit most tastes and ability levels. The lake is also home to a café and has several scenic paths that run along the water's edge. Slightly further afield, it's easy to organise day trips to the cathedral city of Exeter (35 minutes) for shopping trips and eating out. Alternatively, pack your bucket and spade and head to the seaside resort of Bude (35 minutes) on Devon's north coast, or try south coast towns like Teignmouth and Budleigh Salterton (both about an hour).
