  • Well-maintained site on the edge of Dartmoor, with tor views
  • Tavistock 20 minutes drive; Lydford Gorge five minutes' walk
  • Dog walking area and shop selling locally made food
Touring Devon? Place yourself in the middle of the county and have easy access to both north and south as well as moors and beaches with a stay at Lydford Caravan and Camping Park; this friendly and well-kept site also has pretty views of Dartmoor’s tors from its designated dog-walking area… Start planning your adventures with a browse of the tourist and local info at Lydford's dishwashing and veg prep area, or ask staff for their fave attractions and activities in the area. Need a top tip before setting off? The deepest gorge in England is only five minutes' walk away: set off on the circular trail around this National Trust-protected place, passing by the Whitelady Waterfall and Devil’s Cauldron. For bike rides, the Granite Way cycle route runs near the site to Okehampton, nine miles away. Practicalities are covered on site for a restful place to come back to, with ladies' and gents' amenities blocks, a family bathroom, a launderette and charging facilities all available to guests. The site also has a shop selling bits and bobs from locally made food and ice creams to gas canisters and newspapers (order in advance for your daily read). A farm shop is on the outskirts of Launceston about a 20-minute drive away and a large supermarket's about five minutes further on for stocking up for your stay or for a barbecue back at base.

Electric gravel and hardstanding campervan pitch

Liked: On arrival to the camp site we were greeted by the lovely owners, very helpful, pitch was in a great position, and the camp site was very peaceful, once set up we felt like we were home. The facilities were Imaculate and spacious. The shop had any thing you might need. The surrounding walks were breathtaking. We will stay there again. Could not fault the campsite and surroundings.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch (large)

Liked: Fantasy site. So well laid out, clean, well maintained. Not over crowded and pitches are so generous. Staff amazing, especially Louise who is just a ray of sunshine. Location is great for walking, great views and plenty of places to visit without driving. Good bus route that stops right outside campsite.

Disliked: Nothing. Our 2nd visit and love it.

Electric gravel and hardstanding touring pitch (large)

Liked: Lovely site, very clean. Small shop on site with all your necessities. The staff are very polite and helpful and keep the site spick and spam. A short walk into the village which has several historic places of interest. Great pub and a little further walk to another pub. Also managed a afternoon tea at the village hall which was very good. Good bus links to Okehampton or further a field. Will definitely recommend for a quiet week away but with plenty still to do.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Pristine site, with a team who are very helpful. Site is secured at night. Useful stocked site shop. There is a dog exercise area on lead and playing ground very close to exercise your dog off the lead. Close to a very interesting NT area. Also a lovely pub within walking distance.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Wonderful views of Dartmoor. Clean calm campsite, planting for wildlife, good walks, pub a short walk away, nearby bus-stop makes it easy to invent longer or shorter Dartmoor walking routes. This campsite is a favourite of ours. We love the views from the top field but always forget that it does actually slope very slightly. Staff are friendly and efficient. Very dog friendly with shady dog walk around top field. Excellent stargazing from top of site. Lots of good food pubs in the area - Castle Inn and Dartmoor Inn are both walkable from site. Also close to the Granite Way cycle path. Spectacular Lydford Gorge nearby and many other beautiful visits in the area. North Cornwall coast is about 45 minutes away.

Disliked: Note that parts of the upper tent field are exposed to the dominant SW wind so check the weather and choose wisely. (Lower fields are more sheltered). Bring a torch too. Site does not prioritise kids (no play area onsite) but there is plenty of space and a play park across the road. Phone signal is poor though. Wifi vouchers available - haven't tried these. Camp shop is good for ice creams, and often for local meat, but can be a bit erratic for supplies. Shop first (Okehampton or Tavistock).

Electric grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Route directions

Please beware of using satnav systems when approaching the site due to narrow roads. Approach via the A386. The only route for towed or large units is: From the north: Turn south from the A30 onto the A386 signposted Tavistock and Plymouth. Continue for approximately 3.5 miles, passing the Fox and Hounds pub on the left. In another mile, turn right into Lydford village just before the Dartmoor Inn (look for a tall brown tourist board sign showing Lydford, campsite symbols, golf and Lydford Gorge with a telephone box on the left). Note the junction is slightly obscured so approach slowly. After turning, in half a mile take the first right at the war memorial and in 50 yards bear right at the Y-junction. The site is 100 yards on the left. From the south: Via Tavistock, approach only using the A386. At the Dartmoor Inn turn left into Lydford village. After turning, in half a mile turn right at the war memorial and then in 50 yards bear right at the Y-junction. The site is 100 yards along on the left.

Local attractions

If you’d rather ditch your ride and take public transport from just outside the site, Okehampton to the north and Tavistock to the south are both under half an hour away by bus. Head to the latter for the Museum of Dartmoor Life and cool castle ruins, or take the car if you’re planning on heading deeper into Dartmoor afterwards to climb the rocky High Willhays and Yes Tor peaks (both about 55 minutes’ drive). Tavistock, an ancient stannary and market town on the River Tavy, is also top notch: journey here for the living museum on Morwellham Quay (25 minutes), the historic Buckland Abbey (half an hour) and the family-friendly Tamar Trails Centre activity area. Within a few minutes' walk of the site, veer off on your gorge stroll for a look at Lydford Castle and Saxon Town, a former prison dating back to the ninth century and now managed by English Heritage. It sits next to St Petroc’s Church plus a pub serving food (both also within a five-minute walk of the site). If the kids are keen for the coast, Plymouth is 40 minutes’ drive away.
