General

  • Well-maintained and popular park two miles from Okehampton
  • Coarse fishing lake and thousands of recently planted trees and hedges
  • Shower and toilet block with underfloor heated and accessible area

Come and meet Spooky and Fester… These two clever pooches, along with resident owners Tim and Rebecca, run Appledore Park two miles from Okehampton near the north Devon coast, where you’ll also find over 4,500 recently planted trees and hedges (so far), spankingly clean facilities and so many little extra touches you might wonder if Tim and Rebecca (and Spooky and Fester) ran campsites in a previous life: ‘awesome’, ‘top notch’ and ‘knocked our socks off’ are just a few of the accolades Appledore has already received from grateful guests.

Tim, Rebecca and the canine team have eight acres of campsite land at Appledore, all with sweet views of the Devon countryside and the park’s surrounding farmland, and landscaped to hold spacious pitches with electric hook-up. Drinking water is at each bollard on site.

If you’re arriving late, there’s a special late arrivals area with hook-up and water so you can get settled quickly (cuppa). To this smart idea the team have added free wifi throughout the park, good digital TV reception, centrally located waste and recycling points, dishwashing and vegetable preparation area, and an information room with mobile charging points and stacks of info on what to see and do in the surrounding area. The shower and toilet block has underfloor heating, private cubicles and an accessible area for disabled guests.

Up to three well-behaved pooches with well-behaved owners are allowed per pitch, and a dedicated and fenced dog walking area has been set aside among the tree plantation. Once you’re ready for walkies off site, there are plenty of opps to head into the surrounding countryside, or leave the car behind and take the 318 bus that stops at the end of the park’s lane.

Finally, fancy some fishing? Appledore Park has its own coarse fishing lake for guests and you can also cast off from the quay at Appledore village, take a boat out to the sea (the coast is around 30 miles from the site) or try your luck landing salmon or trout on the River Torridge.

    Disliked:

Disappointed that we did not have service point on pitch as suggested on booking. As this site is quite a distance from local shop, would be ideal if there was a shop at the site for milk, bread etc. Wifi was hit and miss, tv signal was poor

This is a very friendly clean and tidy site and the grounds and shower toilet block are so well kept and immaculate, and the area is very peaceful with no light pollution at night.
We had a nice hard standing pitch with all the amenities you need including Wi-Fi.
It is a very dog friendly site with a lovely dog walk. The wild life in the area is varied and in abundance, we saw various types of birds including Owl, wood peckers, buzzards and more swallows and house martins you can count. We also saw deer in the next field.
The site is excellent value. That includes the free range eggs which tasted glorious

Local attractions

Appledore is in core position for trips to Dartmoor on the doorstep, the north Devon coast, waterfalls and whirlpools, castles and the 40 or so gardens of Devon – and that’s just our starter for ten…

Start off at Okehampton a couple of miles from Appledore to see the ruins of eleventh century Okehampton Castle and explore the industrial past of Dartmoor at Finch Foundry, England’s last working water-powered forge. The Museum of Dartmoor Life, an eighteenth century mill with info on the moors throughout the ages and a reconstructed Bronze Age fort and Victorian kitchen, is at the town’s West Street.

Castle Drogo, ‘the last to be built in England’, was finished in 1930 and is now a Grade I listed building looked after by the National Trust, with the Trust’s highest garden, rose gardens and paths snaking below into the gorge of the Teign Valley.

‘Perhaps the most famous walk in Dartmoor’ (so says the NT) is the circular walk from Castle Drogo, above the River Teign and along Hunters Path to cross the Teign and Fingle Bridge. (If you say pah to such claims, Dartmoor has quite a few other walks to test this one against; navigate them yourself or take a guided walk with a park ranger.)

More gorge-ous sights nearby can be seen at Lydford Gorge near Tavistock, the biggest gorge in the south-west and including Devon’s biggest waterfall, the 90-feet high White Lady at its southern edge; and at the RHS’s Rosemoor Gardens, about 40 minutes’ drive from Okehampton.

To day trip at the beach, the nearest sands of Devon and Cornwall are Bude and Widemouth Bay about 45 minutes’ drive away, and Saunton Sands, Croyde, Woolacombe and Westward Ho!, all within around an hour’s drive.
