  • Relaxed and spacious site with views towards Dartmoor
  • Within easy reach of Torbay's beaches and Dartmoor National Park
  • Paignton Zoo, aquarium, seaside towns and more a short drive away
For a sweet-as break on a working farm, head to family-friendly Treacle Valley Campsite in the tiny village of Daccombe, between Dartmoor National Park to the west and more than 20 English Riviera beaches towards the east. This is a top spot for all ages: kids will be kept occupied at the play area or on all the wide open space around the accommodation area, and walks to the village through the surrounding countryside start right from the pitches. Treacle Valley's café/shop stocks all the basics you might need while you're on your hols, and provides a handy and free freezer block service in case you want to pack up a hamper with bubbly (possibly accompanied by a few sandwiches) and head out for the day. When you get hungry you're more than welcome to fire up the barbie or cook up something tasty over your campfire – for anything more substantial, head into one of the nearby seaside towns for supermarkets, seafood restaurants, fish and chip takeaways and posh pub grub. The nearest pub is a 20-minute walk away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked: Apart from access (roads to site being narrow) the campsite was lovely. Well maintained with decent facilities and good coffee machine. Free to use fire pits and honesty box for logs to burn. No anti-social behavior and fantastic view of the sunset through the valley. 10 minute drive to Torquay and would visit again.

Disliked: Access roads and supervision required for young children on park as near fast flowing stream of water which is accessible through openings in hedge

Liked: We loved near everything about the site, views are gorgeous, grounds are well kept, showers and toilets well kept and looked after. Even lockable charging boxes for your devices. So laid back and just easy going. Couldn't ask for more.

Disliked: Not a lot in the shop, but it will definitely sort you out in an emergency.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (XL)

Liked: The toilets are clean. Plenty of toilets and showers so do not need to queue up. In the toilets they have a charging area with loads of sockets where you can charge your electrical goods. A nice sink area to wash all your dishes at the back of the toilets. Field is spacious so can easily find a nice spot. Theres an area by the entrance where you can buy wood. Very close to the beaches.

Disliked: You get the odd smell of cow manure. Cows mooing early hours.

Liked: Beautiful views in a perfect location. The toilets and showers were clean, the washing up facilities were clean and the shop was well stocked of ice cream and snacks. They also do a good coffee! A bag of logs can be bought for £5 and there are log burners provided for free. Because the shop is only open in a morning, there's an honesty box for the logs...please be honest! There's a small park with a swing and a climbing frame with a slide. It would be better if the park area was bigger as it got crowded at times. There are stinging nettles but you're next to a working farm and on a field. We pitched up on the first field as it was flatter than the 2nd field and it was fine. We had family visit for a BBQ and the owners were fine with this. Our boys (9, 9, and 11) had lots of space to run around in and kick a ball about. We will definitely be back next year and have recommended it to friends.

Disliked: The showers are tiny (and aside from building a new shower block, it can't be helped). There are bags for life screwed into the back of the shower cubicle doors for your clothes and hooks for your towels. We found getting dried in the toilet cubicle opposite was the best option once your showered.

Local attractions

For stuff to do nearby, try a visit to the historic village of Cockington, three miles away, where there's a manor house and a cricket ground plus some 16th-century thatched stone cottages and a traditional pub serving cream teas. The award-winning caves of Kents Cavern – once home to prehistoric humans – are also within easy reach of Treacle Valley; this subterranean network lies close to some spectacularly scenic coastal areas with several walking routes along Torbay's UNESCO Global Geopark – one of only seven in the UK. A walk around Babbacombe coves and cliffs begins at Anstey's Cove (opposite Kents Cavern), to wind its way along a scenic track and bring you out into the pretty village of Babbacombe in Torquay; take a ride on the famed Babbacombe Cliff Railway, then follow up with a wander around four acres of award-winning gardens showcasing hundreds of model scenes and railways at Babbacombe Model Village. Take the kids on an animal adventure to explore the marine displays of Living Coasts coastal zoo and the enclosures of Paignton Zoo, both within six miles, or visit the seaside towns of Torquay, Newton Abbot, Paignton or Totnes for miniature golf, arcades, ice cream shops and beaches.
