General

  • In a secluded Devon valley a couple of miles from the coast
  • Adjacent to three coarse fishing lakes and 10 minutes from Torbay
  • Within 15 minutes' walk of the nearest pub

What a well named site this is. For Rocombe Valley Retreat near Newton Abbot in Devon is indeedly in a valley, and is a peaceful bolthole from bosses and the like: it's highly likely that work wouldn't find you were you to settle down here for a matter of weeks...

The retreat is also splendidly well set in its Devon locale, with iglamping units in a field beside a stream and three mighty pretty lakes, all a couple of miles from Devon beaches and a piffling 10-minute drive from Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Torbay. The nearest pub, serving food and ales, is a 15-minute walk away, and four more pubs and restaurants are within a five-minute drive.

All Rocombe Valley accommodation comes fully equipped with cooking equipment, cosy double beds with all bedding supplied, and woodburning stoves using wood coppiced from trees on the farm. Flushing toilets and hot showers are within easy reach in the farm amenities blocks.

There's parking on site for several cars and coarse fishing is available on the lakes adjacent to the valley.

The site was so peaceful we didn't want to leave. The shepherd's hut was equipped with all the basics for drinks and dinner and we were also given a generous helping of kindling and logs for the wood burner. The toilets and showers were clean and well stocked and near enough to the lodges and cabins so it wasn't a huge trek. Peter met us on arrival and showed us around and was a lovely friendly host. We didn't get a chance to try put the pizza oven but we used the communal barn fridges and sink and were pleased by the recycling facilities too. The site was well kept and tucked away in the valley so at night the stars were so clear and amazing and traffic was minimal. I had a brilliant weekend and would love to return in future.

    Disliked:

I didn't dislike anything but if I had a recommendation I would suggest a few more hooks in the hut and the showers/loos to keep clothes coast and bags off the floor and maybe a boot scraper/doormat so you can easily keep grass and mud to a minimum, we visited in October so the mud and grass was hard to banish from our living space. Also the hand dryers didn't seem to work in the loos which meant you had to use loo roll if you wanted to wash your hands.

The facilities were brilliant. The outdoor fire pit was great for keeping warm and cooking meat etc. There was also outdoor gas hobs and a grill for our yurt only which was great for cooking a fry up and making coffee in the mornings. The bed was so comfortable and it was cosy with the log burner inside of the yurt considering the weather has become colder. The owner was so friendly and even came to check we had a good stay upon checkout. A brilliant stay and definitely recommended for others!

Fabulous yurt fully equipped with cooking equipment and a cosy log burner. Nice, peaceful site in the gorgeous Devonshire countryside close to the coast.

    Disliked:

Needs a couple more sinks for washing up in communal area, maybe extra shower/toilet block, shelter over the gas stoves.

Location was fab for exploring Devon. We visited Torquay, Paignton and brixham in 3 days. Loved the shepherds hut it was in fab condition and contained everything we needed. The site had a very laid back and chilled feel - Peter was approachable and accommodating. Showers and toilets were clean and warm and not far! Kitchen included fridge, freezer and a cooker. My partner enjoys fishing so it was great that there were two lakes on site with carp for us to fish in the evening. Local pubs within walking distance. All round amazing experience! Would recommmend! We’ve even spoke about going back already. Loved it.

Stayed in an yurt (which we have done before elsewhere) on this lovely site and would recommend to friends. Only criticisms are of things that were okay but could be improved to make whole stay even better:

    * cover over cooking station areas outside each yurt
    * more pans and better utensils for cooking
    * shower curtains (all were missing for some reason)

All were things that if visiting again we would bring with us to improve the stay.
