Rocombe Valley Retreat: Sun going down over the site

General

  • In a secluded Devon valley a couple of miles from the coast
  • Adjacent to three coarse fishing lakes and 10 minutes from Torbay
  • Within 15 minutes' walk of the nearest pub

What a well named site this is. For Rocombe Valley Retreat near Newton Abbot in Devon is indeed in a valley, and is a peaceful bolthole from bosses and the like: it's highly likely that work wouldn't find you, were you to settle down here for a matter of weeks…

The retreat is also splendidly well set in its Devon locale, with glamping units in a field beside a stream and three mighty pretty lakes, all a couple of miles from Devon beaches and a piffling 10-minute drive from Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Torbay. The nearest pub, serving food and ales, is a 15-minute walk away, and four more pubs and restaurants are within a five-minute drive.

All Rocombe Valley accommodation comes fully equipped with cooking equipment, cosy double beds with all bedding supplied, and woodburning stoves using wood coppiced from trees on the farm. Flushing toilets and hot showers are within easy reach in the farm amenities blocks.

There's parking on site for several cars and coarse fishing is available on the lakes adjacent to the valley.

Please note

Very comfortable Yurts, with comfy beds and wood burner to keep warm.
Fishing ponds on site, perfect for lazy afternoon.
Cooking facilities in shared barn with full gas cooker/oven, fridge freezer, and pizza oven mean if you want to you can cook almost anything from boiling a kettle to a full Sunday roast! Additionally each unit has own individual camp cookers and barbeque outside tent.
Very friendly owner, found a sleeping bag for my son to use when we misread the bedding information (main bed full bedding provided, additional pull-out beds bring your own).
Lovely location with beaches and attractions nearby (recommend visiting the lovely Shaldon Ness).
    Good quality toilets and showers.

    Disliked:

Nothing - an excellent site, we will be back.

The campsite was beautiful, peaceful and exactly what we needed. Everything in the yurt was lovely, bed was so comfortable and the host Peter was so kind and helpful and easy to get hold of. The no electricity was wonderful for us to ditch the mobile phones and enjoy nature a bit more. We added on the hot tub for an additional £40 and would definitely recommend it as the night sky and the stars are incredible from the tub!

    Disliked:

Roads on the way to the camp are very narrow and can be quite scary to drive if you’re an anxious driver.
If you absolutely need power and your phone I would recommend bringing a power charge pack as there is no electricity in the tents

The site was lovely and clean, Peter (owner) was really friendly and helpful. The kids had a lovely time despite the awful weather, the hottub was great for everyone and wasn't too tricky to get hot, though it took at least 4 hours to get up to temperature. And the facilities in the shared area were good. I would say the only thing we would do differently if we went again would be to take a power pack or some solar lighting as there is no power in the tent, and a light would have been good for the evenings to play games. Our phones got really good signal from the tent so we had no issues with the wifi.

We liked the peace and quiet, my son loved the fishing and we had to get him to stop each evening, it was also lovely to sit in the hot tub enjoying the stars. The owner was friendly and welcoming.

    Disliked:

Electricity (but we are a family totally addicted to Electronics, so really it was good for us to have a break) and the Cockerell, (but again I used to have one so wasn't really a problem and if your in the country side you expect it) these dislikes I wouldn't change though, and am only mentioning because it asked.
