Rocombe Valley Retreat: Sun going down over the site

General

  • In a secluded Devon valley a couple of miles from the coast
  • Adjacent to three coarse fishing lakes and 10 minutes from Torbay
  • Within 15 minutes' walk of the nearest pub

What a well named site this is. For Rocombe Valley Retreat near Newton Abbot in Devon is indeed in a valley, and is a peaceful bolthole from bosses and the like: it's highly likely that work wouldn't find you, were you to settle down here for a matter of weeks…

The retreat is also splendidly well set in its Devon locale, with glamping units in a field beside a stream and three mighty pretty lakes, all a couple of miles from Devon beaches and a piffling 10-minute drive from Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Torbay. The nearest pub, serving food and ales, is a 15-minute walk away, and four more pubs and restaurants are within a five-minute drive.

All Rocombe Valley accommodation comes fully equipped with cooking equipment, cosy double beds with all bedding supplied, and woodburning stoves using wood coppiced from trees on the farm. Flushing toilets and hot showers are within easy reach in the farm amenities blocks.

There's parking on site for several cars and coarse fishing is available on the lakes adjacent to the valley.

Please note

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

This was our third visit to Rocombe Valley and as always it was spectacular. Peter and Elliott were fantastic hosts and the accommodation was spotless, clean and cosy. Rocombe is such a peaceful area and we loved sitting in the hot tub at night watching the bats and listening to the owls.

Absolutely loved the safari tent and yurt. We were a group of males so it is hard to find somewhere which would let us stay. We used to camp every year so this was such a luxury!

Having the firepit with logs included, as well as the gas stove and the kitchen area, you were really taken care of.

We will definitely be coming back.

Absolutely fantastic. This is our second visit. The first was a few years ago. What I love about Rocombe is the peace and quiet, authenticity, warm welcome from the manager and the owner, and then you are left alone to enjoy the scenery. It is so near to so many good, free, wild days out. The yurts are cosy, clean and warm. This is a real down-to-earth retreat. It also does its best to be fully sustainable.

    Disliked:

The bed was a bit hard. That is literally my only complaint. Everything else was wonderful.

The locality of the yurt we stayed in was lovely. Surrounded my nature enabling us to have a well rest vacation. The yurt itself was very cosy, especially with the log fire for the colder evenings.
The hot tub was fab for the first few days - well worth trying. However if you are there for a week like us, it does tend to get a bit smelly mid week. Peter soon sorted this when we mentioned it with a little chlorine.
Hot water was great in the shower - nice power showers, and flushing toilets - comfy beds.

    Disliked:

We would love to give this a 5 star rating, however little niggly things let it down in our opinion - but this is just our opinion. The communal fridges could have done clean and guests need to make sure they empty their foods when leaving as we found out of date food items left behind.
Also the showers are tiny, so make sure you pack towels that covers your modesty to walk back to the yurts to get dried, as there is no room other than to shower. Showers and toilets could have done with being checked and cleaned/ mopped every few days. Whilst we cleaned after each use, we weren't able to mop the dirty floors. Sanitising spray is available for guests to use, but not everyone did.
