Touring

General

  • Family-run site on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park
  • Just over 10 minutes’ drive to Newton Abbot and 30 to Torquay beaches
  • Bovey Tracey within 15 minutes and Paignton half an hour away

For a hol full of zest in south Devon squeeze in some time at family-run Lemonford Caravan Park, a well-located spot for exploring the many attractions in this area. It’s between country and coast right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and half an hour’s drive from the beaches around the English Riviera resorts of Torquay and Paignton.

After settling in trekkers might want to tackle the craggy terrain of Dartmoor first, scrambling over the hills and paddling in the streams and rivers of this sprawling granite-studded setting. The walk up to Hay Tor (starting from just over 10 minutes’ drive away) is stellar if you’re seeking a structured stroll: it’ll have you taking in the classic moorland scenery while you work up a sweat. Widecombe in the Moor’s also worth stopping by (a 15-minute drive), a typical Devonshire town with a cracker of a cathedral.

More of a beachcomber? You can make a beeline towards Teignmouth and Dawlish for castle-building on the sand or choose Paignton Pier for coastal sessions in between tenpin bowling, fairground rides and crazy golf (all around 30 minutes’ drive away). Leaflets for farm parks, model villages, caves and other stuff to do are all on display at the site’s information area if you’ll be looking for more attractions and activities.

Also at Lemonford Caravan Park are amenities including toilets, showers, washing-up areas, a shared freezer and a laundry room; a spacious separate wetroom and toilet are also available for guests with limited mobility.

For other essentials like supermarkets and town shops, Newton Abbot (just over 10 minutes away) is your hub and it has a leisure centre should kids be wanting to swap sessions on the park playground for splashing in a swimming pool.

    - The park was tidy and extremely well kept
    - Staff were super helpful and friendly
    - Little shop on site with essentials which were very reasonably priced
    - brilliant location, short drive to all local amenities.

    Disliked:

    - The only negative for us was that there were limited kitchen utensils in the caravan. As there were not any chopping knives/board, or baking trays for use with the oven we had to pop to Tesco to buy some.
However this was not a major issue and if we stay again we just know to bring our own.

One of the most important things when you travel single female is that you feel safe on site. That staff are friendly and welcoming. I not only felt safe I felt at home.

Lemonford is one of my favourite campsites. Discovered this year. Went one week. Left on Friday and returned on Monday. Staff work really hard. Have seen cleaners (lovely Audrey) cleaning toilets at midnight. Whenever I went into toilets or shower they were spotless.

The site is small and intimate. Right behind the site is lovely countryside walks. Beautiful scenery with farm animals and a stream. Perfect for dog walking. Within mins in the car you are in Dartmoor. What stunning scenery. 10 mins at Trago mills which sells anything you might have forgotten camping or otherwise. A short drive to Newton abbot with all the supermarkets and shops you could need. It's close to Devon expressway so easy to get to places. I drove down to Looe in Cornwall and explored south Devon coastline. Everywhere in South Devon is accessible from here.

Would I return? Absolutely. I am sure I won't leave it too long. Keep up the good work guys!! :)

Lovely friendly site but was overbooked, the tents were packed in like sardines. This meant that the toilets were never clean.

There were 2 toilet blocks and the smaller one is next to the tents so was in constant use.

Despite the amount of people of the site is was really quiet in the night time and mostly during the day.

the seasonal campers were happy to help out with anything we might need to borrow.

    Disliked:

dirty toilets but thats already covered in last part.

Local attractions

It’s 10 minutes’ drive to Buckfast Abbey from the site, an active Benedictine monastery dating back to 1018; get cultural here then balance it out with an offbeat activity like a trip to the House of Marbles in the small town of Bovey Tracey (under 15 minutes away) for the mesmerising glass displays, games museum and pottery pieces.

For urban times in a bigger settlement, Exeter’s 30 minutes away – skedaddle here to tour the cathedral and the city centre’s underground passages; high-street shopping is also excellent in Devon’s capital on the River Exe.

Also on the water, Plymouth is 35 minutes south if you fancy checking out the famed spot where the Pilgrim fathers first left for the US on the Mayflower in 1620...
