Lemonford Caravan Park: Touring pitches

General

  • Family-run site on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park
  • Just over 10 minutes’ drive to Newton Abbot and 30 to Torquay beaches
  • Bovey Tracey within 15 minutes and Paignton half an hour away

For a hol full of zest in south Devon squeeze in some time at family-run Lemonford Caravan Park, a well-located spot for exploring the many attractions in this area. It’s between country and coast right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and half an hour’s drive from the beaches around the English Riviera resorts of Torquay and Paignton.

After settling in, trekkers might want to tackle the craggy terrain of Dartmoor first, scrambling over the hills and paddling in the streams and rivers of this sprawling granite-studded setting. The walk up to Hay Tor (starting from just over 10 minutes’ drive away) is stellar if you’re seeking a structured stroll: it’ll have you taking in the classic moorland scenery while you work up a sweat. Widecombe in the Moor (a 15-minute drive) is also worth stopping by for a typical Devonshire town with a cracker of a church (so splendid it's known as the Cathedral of the Moor).

More of a beachcomber? You can make a beeline towards Teignmouth and Dawlish for castle-building on the sand or choose Paignton Pier for coastal sessions in between tenpin bowling, fairground rides and crazy golf (all around 30 minutes’ drive away). Leaflets for farm parks, model villages, caves and other stuff to do are all on display at the site’s information area if you’ll be looking for more attractions and activities.

Also at Lemonford Caravan Park are amenities including toilets, showers, washing-up areas, a shared freezer and a laundry room; a spacious separate wetroom and toilet are also available for guests with limited mobility.

For other essentials like supermarkets and town shops, Newton Abbot (just over 10 minutes away) is your hub and it has a leisure centre should kids be wanting to swap sessions on the park playground for splashing in a swimming pool.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Location, local pub was good for arrival night dinner, staff were friendly, level pitch.

    Disliked:

Old knackered caravans left there for sometime with chairs stacked outside, toys left around it - very unsightly in all honestly and several people were commenting on them. Showers and loos were totally naff. Really old and need updating desperately. Kids play ground was really small and a residential grade climbing frame - no space for kids bikes/ball games etc. Very basic campsite. All hand cleaners were empty!

Friendly site manager and his lovely wife in the reception, nothing was to much trouble, even the loan of a cork screw for our wine.
The play area where our 3 year old made lots of new friends.
An Ideal base to explore Dartmoor, the coast and many National Trust properties.

    Disliked:

Would have been better to have a designated plot with enough room to park your car within this.

    Not much.

    Disliked:

I camp alot and I have never seen anything so disappointing.

Unclean Toilets & showers and just the general lack of attention to the cleanliness of the place.

Not once did I see the toilet or shower blocks get cleaned.
The shower blocks were never cleaned properly and I know this because the same ball of hair, the same razor cover and the same dirt was in the shower cubicle for the 5 days I stayed at the camp site.
No regular checks done in any of the toilet/shower blocks. This would benefit massively with a check sheet signed every other hour or so to let everyone know that the toilets are checked regularly.

For the site manager to ask us to ring a mobile number if we are not happy with state of the toilets/shower should not be relied up on.

On the final day there was human feaces left in the ladies shower cubicle!

I would never stay here again and I would not be recommending it to anyone.

Our pitch was very sheltered from the elements by trees and bushes.
Fab location with lots of fields and walking areas for dogs.
Love the fact there was a bath in the shower block.
Even though the site was at maximum capacity it was quiet and peaceful

    Disliked:

Could do with a hose attachment for the drinking water tap which would make it easier to fill aquarolls and what not.
Not fussed on the gravel floor

Local attractions

It’s 10 minutes’ drive from here to Buckfast Abbey, an active Benedictine monastery dating back to 1018; get cultural here then balance it out with an offbeat activity like a trip to the House of Marbles in the small town of Bovey Tracey (under 15 minutes away) for the mesmerising glass displays, games museum and pottery pieces.

For urban times in a bigger settlement, Exeter’s 30 minutes away – skedaddle here to tour the cathedral and the city centre’s underground passages; high-street shopping is also excellent in Devon’s capital on the River Exe.

Also on the water, Plymouth is 35 minutes south if you fancy checking out the famed spot where the Pilgrim fathers first left for the US on the Mayflower in 1620...
