Lemonford Caravan Park: Nice level pitches

General

  • Family-run site on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park
  • Just over 10 minutes’ drive to Newton Abbot and 30 to Torquay beaches
  • Bovey Tracey within 15 minutes and Paignton half an hour away

For a hol full of zest in south Devon squeeze in some time at family-run Lemonford Caravan Park, a well-located spot for exploring the many attractions in this area. It’s between country and coast right on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and half an hour’s drive from the beaches around the English Riviera resorts of Torquay and Paignton.

After settling in, trekkers might want to tackle the craggy terrain of Dartmoor first, scrambling over the hills and paddling in the streams and rivers of this sprawling granite-studded setting. The walk up to Hay Tor (starting from just over 10 minutes’ drive away) is stellar if you’re seeking a structured stroll: it’ll have you taking in the classic moorland scenery while you work up a sweat. Widecombe in the Moor (a 15-minute drive) is also worth stopping by for a typical Devonshire town with a cracker of a church (so splendid it's known as the Cathedral of the Moor).

More of a beachcomber? You can make a beeline towards Teignmouth and Dawlish for castle-building on the sand or choose Paignton Pier for coastal sessions in between tenpin bowling, fairground rides and crazy golf (all around 30 minutes’ drive away). Leaflets for farm parks, model villages, caves and other stuff to do are all on display at the site’s information area if you’ll be looking for more attractions and activities.

Also at Lemonford Caravan Park are amenities including toilets, showers, washing-up areas, a shared freezer and a laundry room; a spacious separate wetroom and toilet are also available for guests with limited mobility.

For other essentials like supermarkets and town shops, Newton Abbot (just over 10 minutes away) is your hub and it has a leisure centre should kids be wanting to swap sessions on the park playground for splashing in a swimming pool.

Quiet, Relaxing & Clean site, Friendly & Helpful staff, when we checked in we were given a pitch that wouldn't have left much room between us and other tents, we went to reception to ask for a different pitch and was sorted straight away and given a different pitch without any issues and the facilities were clean and tidy every time we used them.

Great site, lovely people, immaculately clean caravan highly recommend11/08/2022

This is one of the nicest sites we have stayed at and we try new places in the UK most years. We didnt use the showers etc as we stayed in a static caravan.

The caravan was immaculate on arrival. We were asked to bring our own sheets due to COVID which was fine. You will also need to bring your own pillows too and duvets - we didn't but this was fine as it was so hot we only needed sheets. Our caravan had a lovely stream next to it and a large patio and grass area where the children could play. There is also a small park where the children can play, climbing frame, slide, swings and grassed area. There was no wifi as it was being rewired but we didn't care - we don't go on holiday to use the internet and wouldn't care if they didn't have it at all.

The staff and people were lovely and at one point the trip switch flipped and the owner came within minutes to show us where it was and turn it back on. He also gave us a fond farewell as we left - we love that in Devon everyone calls you 'bub' or 'lovely' everywhere you go which is always welcome :-).

There was a lovely BBQ and karaoke on Saturday night. We couldn't stay long as the little ones were tired but everyone was having fun there and there was a bouncy castle too.

The site is in a great location - a short drive to Buckfast Abbey where you can buy the local wine and mead made by the monks there and go to a lovely traditional catholic mass if that's your cup of tea. The Abbey itself is stunning as are the gardens.

Torquay is a short drive and was lovely with very reasonably priced arcades for the little ones and a boat trip (£15 for family of 4 return to Paignton) too.

Cockington is close too and well worth a visit, a lovely traditional Devonshire village where you can get cream teas and scones and a great pub called the Drum Inn serving delicious cocktails. There are also horses and carriages that will take you around the village. As we got there the vicar was blessing the horses which was lovely. There is a craft village there where you can see glass blowing and a blacksmith in action and buy the goods and a small park for the children as well as huge grounds to walk through and picnic in.

Brixham fishing village is also close and we had a great day there too. Lots of lovely shops and a huge pirate ship the children can explore (a bit pricey though to board but you can just look at it and enjoy if you dont board it).

We had a beach day at Blackpool sands, parking was £10 for the day which was worth it. Shingle beach and beautiful clear waters.

We will definitely be back to Lemonford and nearly cried when we had to go home - our only regret is not staying longer.

    Disliked:

We didn't dislike anything at all. We normally stay a little closer to the coast but it was a very short drive to the seaside.

Very clean facilities and very handy having a small shop on site. There is a very nice little walk for dogs two minutes from your pitch with a nice river for the dogs to cool off in.

    Disliked:

The park could do with being slightly bigger and maybe more activities on site for the kids to enjoy. That being said the kids had a great time and were always occupied. At the end of my stay the site became extremely busy and tents became very clustered.

Everything! Beautiful views, friendly, helpful staff up at crack of dawn cleaning facilities, and again in the afternoon. Nice little shop on site, well displayed opening times. Lovely camping area, nice flat pitches. We had fantastic weather all week which helped. Met lovely people from Wales and Sheffield. Local to a lot of lovely resorts and places and found the best chips ever in Paignton!! Even the road running alongside campsite didn't bother us in the early morning. Security was good, issued with a barrier key to keep out unwanted guests. Nice little park for young children. Thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and would recommend to anyone.

Local attractions

It’s 10 minutes’ drive from here to Buckfast Abbey, an active Benedictine monastery dating back to 1018; get cultural here then balance it out with an offbeat activity like a trip to the House of Marbles in the small town of Bovey Tracey (under 15 minutes away) for the mesmerising glass displays, games museum and pottery pieces.

For urban times in a bigger settlement, Exeter’s 30 minutes away – skedaddle here to tour the cathedral and the city centre’s underground passages; high-street shopping is also excellent in Devon’s capital on the River Exe.

Also on the water, Plymouth is 35 minutes south if you fancy checking out the famed spot where the Pilgrim fathers first left for the US on the Mayflower in 1620...
