General

  • Glamping pods on a peaceful organic farm a mile from Stokeinteignhead
  • A mile from a sandy beach and the South West Coast Path
  • Firepit, kitchenette and private bathroom for each pod

Cosy pods in a peaceful spot among the cobnut trees and looking out to an organic apple orchard… it’s quite possible you’ll want to nest at The Hen's Dens at Orchard Organic Farm for some time...

Grab a perch at this family-friendly site in the south Devon countryside, 15 minutes from Newton Abbot, and you’ll be in for a comfy break without having to cart a load of kit around. Each of the dens has comfy beds (you just need to bring your sleeping bags and pillows), heating and electrical supply; a short trot takes you to your own personal lockable amenities area with toilet, shower and a little kitchenette (kettle, microwave and fridge – perfect for sorting brekkie).

A few lungfuls of fresh air may well tempt you out into the open for meals, so you’ve also got picnic benches, firepits and barbecues provided to keep you fed and toasty while you take in the rural views, the sunset or the starry skies. If the weather doesn’t approve such such antics, take refuge in the local pub, a mile away in pretty Stokeinteignhead.

Free-range folks will find plenty of roaming to be done in the area: Maidencombe beach and the South West Coast Path are a mile away and Torquay’s a 15-minute drive away. Exeter, Dartmoor National Park and Paignton Zoo are within 45 minutes.

Everything! We loved having our own little kitchen area and a private bathroom. All areas were clean and there was everything we needed. The children enjoyed running around the orchard and watching the chickens.
We took our own air beds which deflated during the first night, I called Jerry and he arrived within minutes to lend us the most comfortable beds. Next time we will definitely hire these in advance!

A lovely small site with good facilities. The site owner was very kind and helpful to us. We will definitely be returning. A great base for exploring the area.

    Disliked:

We got a bit confused as description said each hut had a bbq. We didnt realise that it is a stone area that you can use a disposable bbq on so we only bought charcoal thinking there would be a grate to use. The owner was very helpful though and loaned us the use of a double gas burner so we could cook our dinner.
It would also be useful if there was a path leading from the main path to your individual hut as it did get rather muddy with all the rain and we were dragging it into the hut with us.

From the manager...

Hi Gemma
Great to meet you and thanks for the review. Apologies for the BBQ issue. We will un-tick the BBQ box to make it a little clearer. Thanks again.

What an excellent little (last minute) find this was.

As it was coming into the New Year, I had decided to do some walking on the SW Coast Path (Teignmouth is about 4 miles away) and didn't want to camp in a tent in the depths of a British winter, so Orchard Organic Farm Chicken Coup popped up on my Pitch Up search engine. That sounds 'quirky' I thought and better than camping in a tent!

This stay exceeded all my expectations, not only is the environment lovely...a step outside your coup reveals views of the farms organic orchard and a field to walk my dog in that nestled against the yard where the free range chickens roamed but the accommodation was warm and cosy, spacious and very modern. The ideas of me bedding down in a dusty cobwebbed chicken shed were very quickly upgraded when I arrived.

This is a modern clean and deceptively large space but still retains its feel of camping and being in the outside environment. A little heater kept me cosy on the dark winter evenings and whilst I didn't use it this time around (because of poor weather and dark nights) there is outside cooking by your coup and a lovely bench in which to share meals with friends.

The private kitchenette and bathroom/shower is brilliant, clean and the pressure of the shower was good and there's a communal washing up area. There's also a communal cooking area (under cover) and a snug which I didn't use but contained lots of useful information and maps! In additional you can light a fire with a fire pit being provided by the owners including logs.

Lovely touch on arrival was some free range eggs and a bottle of Prosecco, the hosts really have thought of everything. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again, great value for money and felt private enough yet communal if that was what you wanted.I also liked the continued Eco/Organic principles of the place, the balance felt really good.

    Disliked:

Nothing, possibly a walkable local pub but that's all!

Local attractions

Being a mere mile from the south Devon coast, you’ll no doubt be wanting to get down there, whatever flavour of seaside sojourn you favour. Get your boots to stride along the scenic South West Coast Path, or totter along to quiet Maidencombe beach, a mile away, for sandcastles and sea paddling.

No need to restrict yourselves to one beach though – there are plenty of gorgeous specimens along this stretch of coastline. Try Ness Cove (five minutes away by car) for fishing and rockpooling or Teignmouth (10 minutes) for traditional amusements along the pier and prom. Torquay’s Living Coasts animal park and Paignton Zoo are both within a 20-minute drive if you need a break from the beaches.

Active types may like to head north to Dartmoor National Park (45 minutes) for all sorts of walks and bike rides, plus horse riding, climbing, canoeing and wild swimming. Folks with more of an eye for history and culture will want to wend their way towards Exeter (half an hour) instead to take in the cathedral, museums and 600-year-old Powderham Castle.

  • Living Coasts (3.8 miles)
  • Paignton Zoo Environmental Park (6.6 miles)
