The Hen's Dens at Orchard Organic Farm: Outdoor seating area

General

  • Glamping pods on a peaceful organic farm a mile from Stokeinteignhead
  • A mile from a sandy beach and the South West Coast Path
  • Firepit, kitchenette and private bathroom for each pod

Cosy pods in a peaceful spot among the cobnut trees and looking out to an organic apple orchard… it’s quite possible you’ll want to nest at The Hen's Dens at Orchard Organic Farm for some time…

Grab a perch at this family-friendly site in the south Devon countryside, 15 minutes from Newton Abbot, and you’ll be in for a comfy break without having to cart a load of kit around if you like. Furnish the warm, spacious dens with your own kit or sort an easy stay by adding cooking equipment and beds (you just need to bring your sleeping bags and pillows). Each one has heating and electrical supply; a short trot takes you to your own personal lockable amenities area with toilet, shower and a little kitchenette (kettle, microwave and fridge – perfect for sorting brekkie).

A few lungfuls of fresh air may well tempt you out into the open for meals, so you’ve also got picnic benches, firepits and barbecues provided to keep you fed and toasty while you take in the rural views, the sunset or the starry skies. If the weather doesn’t approve such such antics, take refuge in the local pub, a mile away in pretty Stokeinteignhead.

Free-range folks will find plenty of roaming to be done in the area: Maidencombe beach and the South West Coast Path are a mile away and Torquay’s a 15-minute drive away. Exeter, Dartmoor National Park and Paignton Zoo are within 45 minutes.

Nothing really. Only suggestion is it would be great if the farm shop had milk for sale as well as the apple juice and firewood. Would have saved me a trip :)

Well worth the six hour journey10/11/2020

Well designed, practical, and convenient pods. And the fact that they’re repurposed chicken coops make their story even more interesting. Well thought of separate private toilets and kitchenette design. And these were constructed prior to the pandemic, so they came very handy and timely, indeed. The most common and consistent themes throughout the site are that of cleanliness, every practical need met, customer’s interest at their best, and consistent “organic” brand. Jerry has provided excellent customer service from the time we rang after we’ve booked, during our arrival, and throughout the whole stay. And their lovely dog came to entertain all of us, which was a bonus. Devon was well worth the 6 hour journey and more so with our lovely stay at the Hen’s Dens. Hoping to visit again in the future.

Local attractions

Being a mere mile from the south Devon coast, you’ll no doubt be wanting to get down there, whatever flavour of seaside sojourn you favour. Get your boots to stride along the scenic South West Coast Path, or totter along to quiet Maidencombe beach, a mile away, for sandcastles and sea paddling.

No need to restrict yourselves to one beach though – there are plenty of gorgeous specimens along this stretch of coastline. Try Ness Cove (five minutes away by car) for fishing and rockpooling or Teignmouth (10 minutes) for traditional amusements along the pier and prom. Torquay’s Living Coasts animal park and Paignton Zoo are both within a 20-minute drive if you need a break from the beaches.

Active types may like to head north to Dartmoor National Park (45 minutes) for all sorts of walks and bike rides, plus horse riding, climbing, canoeing and wild swimming. Folks with more of an eye for history and culture will want to wend their way towards Exeter (half an hour) instead to take in the cathedral, museums and 600-year-old Powderham Castle.

Must see

  • Living Coasts (3.8 miles)
  • Paignton Zoo Environmental Park (6.6 miles)
  • Buckfast Abbey (11.3 miles)

National Trust

  • Compton Castle (4.4 miles)
  • Greenway (9.4 miles)
