Tucked into a peaceful Devon valley 10 minutes’ drive from Newton Abbot, Dornafield Dartmoor Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is a quiet park centred on a historic farmhouse – now the reception and shop. This splendid spot has a nostalgic vibe that’s reminiscent of camping holidays as they used to be, and it’s a secure, family-friendly environment where children are free to explore safely. The site is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and it’s open to both members and non-members, with special rates available for members. Please note the price displayed is for members; non-members will need to select the £15 per night extra or buy a membership (which gives you discounted access to all Club sites for a year). As is usual with a Club-managed site, there is great attention to detail. Pitches are super-sized and fully serviced, while the leafy grounds are all meticulously maintained – just like the modern shower blocks, which have accessible options, a family bathroom and baby changing facilities. On the leisure side, younger guests can race around at the well-equipped play area, while adults and older kids get involved in gently competitive games of table tennis and pool in the games room or kick a ball around in the multi-use sports court. Your dogs are welcome to join in all the fun, and there are loads of countryside walks straight from the pitches. Dornafield is also a gateway to the English Riviera at Torbay and the rugged splendour of Dartmoor National Park.

Local attractions

Sitting between the south coast and the wild uplands of Dartmoor, the site’s handy location lends itself to an array of day trips. Turn south to the palm-dotted English Riviera at Torbay (25 minutes’ drive), where you and the kids can enjoy traditional seaside attractions like sandy beaches and watersports in the River Dart Country Park (also 25 minutes), or do a short hop along the South West Coast Path. In the opposite direction lies Dartmoor National Park (15 minutes), a paradise for hikers, cyclists and nature lovers seeking open-air adventures on dramatic craggy tors and moorland. Sports enthusiasts are also catered for, with a challenging 18-hole course at Dainton Park Golf Club (five minutes), while active families can run around in treetops at Go Ape Haldon Forest (25 minutes). The cute town of Totnes (15 minutes) has origins dating back to Elizabethan times; visit to walk the banks of the River Dart and browse indie shops for arty bits and pieces. If you’re hankering after a day of urban culture, both Exeter (35 minutes) and Plymouth (50 minutes) come up trumps, with lively shopping and dining scenes as well as ancient heritage and seafaring traditions to discover in museums and ancient buildings.
