  • Dartmoor National Park 20 minutes’ drive; Widemouth Bay 35 minutes
  • Camping kitchen and covered dining area; sheep and chickens on site
Combine a farm holiday with a bit of luxury when you book a glamping tent at Tinhay Retreats in rural Devon. They’re set on an eight-acre wildflower meadow at a family smallholding with sheep, chickens, dogs and a very friendly campsite cat, and you’re free to wander around the fields – the Exmoor Horn sheep are friendly and will come looking for treats. If you would like to feed them, please ask the owners for their special sheep nuts. The prettied-up off-grid canvas tents come fully equipped with a double bed and all bedding, as well as cutlery and crockery for four people, a cooking stove, utensils and a cool box – and there’s a covered camping kitchen adjacent to each unit. Outside your cosy tent is a picnic table and chairs under a dining shelter. Modern showers and flush toilets are shared with other campers, and there is also a designated communal area in the small orchard for campfires and barbecues. Bags of wood are for sale at the house. Breakfast can be taken care of with fresh eggs from the free-range hens, but if alfresco cooking doesn’t quite do it for you, the village of Lifton (15 minutes’ walk) has three pubs serving good food. The village shop is open every day, and there’s a farm shop and restaurant five minutes’ drive away.

Ladycroft bell tent

Liked Everything! Friendly hosts, beautiful surroundings, hot shower, comfy bed, well equipped tent and cooking area and little touches like a cream tea fresh out of the oven on arrival and the chance for my daughter to feed the sheep made for a lovely trip. Lots to do local. Definitely could have stayed all week and not run out of things to do. The local farm shop strawberry fields was well worth a look and Mr Pickles the charming cat visiting us for cuddles was a treat. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Ladycroft bell tent

Liked Lovely and quiet, peaceful. Very clean and comfortable. Hosts were friendly. Complimentary cream tea was such a lovely surprise and absolutely delicious. We stayed with a 5 year old and a 13 year old, they both really enjoyed it. We were offered the opportunity to feed the sheep which was a lovely touch. Would definitely book again. We enjoyed walking around the meadow field.

Ladycroft bell tent

Liked We had the chance to feed the sheep, which I loved.
Tent was well equipped and had a little covered seating area outside with a gas stove.
Warm shower in a converted horse trailer and an outside toilet
Oh and the farm cat who is just the sweetest thing and loves cuddles

Disliked Nothing major but might be worth adding some solar lights for the walk to the loo as I forgot our torch the first night

Ladycroft bell tent

Liked We had a lovely 2 night stay in the bell tent at this site. It was well equipped with everything you would need to be comfortable. The hosts were great, really friendly and helpful. My daughter loved going to feed the sheep. Little touches like fresh flowers on the table and a complimentary cream tea were really thoughtful. The facilities were nice and clean, although as expected were quite "rustic". Keep in mind it's a small farm style campsite. Lots of things to do locally if the weather is dry. We would definitely stay here again as really good value for money.

A foray into Dartmoor National Park (20 minutes) turns up prehistoric monuments like Fernworthy Stone Circle (45 minutes), and scrambles up to granite outcrops including Easdon Tor (45 minutes) for views over vast tracts of moorland. Cyclists can explore the park along the Granite Way cycle path from Okehampton, stopping off at the Museum of Dartmoor Life (both 20 minutes) to see dioramas of traditional life in times gone by. Take the kids to see the vintage bumper cars and carousels at Dingles Fairground Museum (10 minutes), follow family-friendly nature trails in Becky Falls Ancient Woodland Park (50 minutes), or hike boardwalk through woodland in National Trust-owned Lydford Gorge (20 minutes) to a dramatic waterfall.
