General

  • Spectacular views in south Devon
  • Slipway access to launch small boats, canoes and kayaks
  • Wooded glade, barbecues and farm shop

The laidback owners of Wilton Farm, just outside Kingsbridge in south Devon, very much like their local landscape. They've been living in the area for over 50 years, but resolutely say they'll never tire of looking at the glorious views from their farm.

After a peek at the site pics (go on), you'll probably a) agree and b) have envy. Wilton Farm is on eight acres of land, with splendidly spectacular scenes across the site to Salcombe and to the local village of South Pool, all tucked into South Hams countryside a couple of miles from the – also highly scenic – Devon coast.

And there's messing around in boats. One of the Wilton Farm family's fave places on site is the good-looking and chilled-out glade where guests can go to relax – right next to the farm's own slipway access where lucky ducks with their own vessels can launch canoes, kayaks or small boats onto the estuary (use the 'special requests' box to ask about bringing your small boat when you book). You might now heave an envious sigh...

Wilton Farm has toilet and shower facilities available on site. As it's a working farm, Wilton has stacks of fresh tasty produce to sell in its shop, and a barbecue area on site too to sizzle up a storm. Another envious sigh...

I have just come home from a 10 night stay at this wonderful farm. It was great from start to finish. I have two boys ages 6 and 9 and they both we happy playing on the Hay Bales and rope swings meeting new friends. The owner Paul and his brother John were so welcoming and friendly, they made our stay very comfortable. For example we had brought the wrong gas for our cooker with us and Paul was able to help and find the gas we need from his tractor shed so we could cook from the 1st night. The farm shop is brill to get all the things you need if you didn't want to travel in the car to the local super market. Its very reasonable in price and is managed by a honesty box. The showers were lovely, I liked the fact they are out doors it gives a feel of it being a proper camping holiday, along with the composting toilets that me and my family found quite fun to use. The powder room was also great and felt very cosy. It was just a shame that people misused and damaged it while we were there so was 1 sink down.
Just a short but steep walk, you can go to the Glade which is beautiful and it was a lovely way to spend a hot summers day as its nice and shady. Paul also put on tractor ride to show all the beautiful views and Pony rides too. This was by far the best camping holiday we have had. Thank you Paul and John, we can't wait to come back next year.

This campsite is in a stunning location with fantastic views around the local countryside- down towards the sea at Salcombe. The owners are relaxed and allowed me to pay the balance after a few days as I didn't have it on arrival.
Of the 2 fields- we stayed in field 2- the lower field which can be a little exposed in the morning. However, there are some swings from trees and hay to play on- this kept the kids entertained for a while. The campsite is off the beaten track and accessed via single track roads- this certainly sharpens up your reversing skills. All in all, a lovely site and a fun place to stay- thanks!

    Disliked:

It rained on one day but that isn't the campsites fault. Only 2 decent toilets available in the lower field. Although I noticed more being delivered to the upper field so overall, there should be enough!

From the manager...

Thank you for a lovely review! Glad the kids enjoyed the hay bales & rope swing :)

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. A large site but not the least crowed with a proper natural camping feel. Two well kept fields, one with an amazing view of Kingsbridge - this is the most popular field so may be quieter in the other and equally as nice. Compost loos changed each day and amazing hot showers. Their is a farm shop, and chance to hire a BBQ which we used as a camp fire. All based on an honesty system so can help yourself at anytime and pay in the tin.
Camping with children we liked the quiet at 10 pm which was generally stuck to by talking quietly -defiantly quiet by 11.
Staff are genuinely lovely and will help as best they can.
Best of all no wifi so no chance of any devises. Children running free and happy.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but a warning of very narrow lanes to reach the site.

From the manager...

Thank you for such a wonderful review. Really lovely to see how much you enjoyed your stay and that the kids had a great time too!

The farm was nice and spacious with a relaxed feel to it. The hilltop position provided us with beautiful views across to Salcombe.

The showers and toilets were rustic but worked well. All in all I think this campsite was great value for money.

The local pub in South Pool was a nice 20 minute walk away (perhaps fasterwithout small children) and we also enjoyed delicious pizzas one evening from a pop-up stall in the village.

Thank you for a great stay.

    Disliked:

Recycling bins in the camping fields might have made it easier to dispose of rubbish but not a big problem to sort the recycling at the end of our visit.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review & sharing the lovely photos! Great feedback regarding the recycling bins - will review and see what we can do to improve :)

    We loved it!!!!
Only just returned home and already can't wait to go back.
The gentleman who greeted us (Paul) was lovely, warm and welcoming.
Considering we came during the summer holidays, it was so so quiet. We had so much space and as you aren't confined to a pitch as such, you could choose where to settle down.
I haven't seen breath taking views like those for ages. And the Stars at night are so so bright as there is hardly any light pollution. It's ideal for dogs! Surrounding villages are also very dog friendly. We found breathtaking beaches near by and went on many amazing walks. A great, dogfriendly pub is in walking distance.
You won't get bored there. There's just so much to see and do around.
Coming from a farming background myself, I felt completely at home. We loved how the environment friendly everything is.
Also, in all these years of caravaning and camping, we have never stayed on a campsite where we met so many like-minded people.
It's easily to notice how much love and though has gone into this site.
My husband, my doggies and myself can't wait to come back!!!

The simple set up of two large fields with toilets and shower facilities at the top which were easy to walk to from any pitch. The toilets and showers were basic in the sense it was a long drop but an effort was made to make them look nice with a mirror and drawers etc and it was very clean with lots of toilet rolls. Was very family friendly with kids and dogs running around happily. Stunning views of salcombe from the top field. Also liked that we were free to have a BBQ or fire if we wanted.

    Disliked:

Slight lack of organisation in the office due to not using computers and it wasn't very well sign posted through the lanes.

Local attractions

What a honking amount of things there are to see and do in the South Hams for holidaymakers of all flavours – coastal connoisseurs, book buffs, fisherfolk, foodies, watersporters, scenery seekers, history hunters, wildlife watchers and canny kids all trot to these parts for a slice of what they fancy.

The coast is only a couple of miles away with miles of sandy beaches to pick from, but the Wilton Farm team recommend Mill Bay and Fisherman’s Cove, both scenically inspiring options for south Devon writer Agatha Christie. Nearby Salcombe is the spot for sailing, with surfing, kiteboarding and surf lessons available at Bantham about eight miles along the coast.

If you're a Poirot, Marple or Tommy and Tuppence fan, Agatha Christie attractions are plentiful in the area, like her house Greenway near Brixham (again, seriously scenic), the Agatha Christie gallery at Torquay Museum, the Agatha Christie Trail, and the Potent Plants part of Torre Abbey, inspired by the different potions in her books featuring plants to kill or cure.

Nature trailers can start out straight from the site, with birdwatching and wildlife watching close to hand too from the lookout spots of Slapton Ley, a National Nature Reserve around the biggest natural lake in the south-west: look out for the cirl bunting, once almost extinct, as well as dormice, badgers, bats and otters.

More of a history hunter? Ask the Wilton Farm lot for local tales of ghosts and famous inhabitants of the area, or drive down to Slapton Sands, behind Slapton Ley, where the D-Day landings were practised (spot the recovered Sherman tank at Torcross).

For kids, Paignton and its zoo is about 20 – 25 minutes' drive away, and Devon's Crealy Great Adventure Park within about an hour. At Dartmouth, Woodlands Leisure Park, Dartmouth Castle and boating down the Dart to Totnes should keep all sizes occupied; have some time in Totnes too for townie individualism like an Alice in Wonderland-themed café, independent shops, market and a shop specialising in harps.

We'll finish at the pub, we think: run along to the Pig Nose Inn in East Prawle for some first-class food, or the Globe Inn just down the road in Frogmore for affordable family grub in a Good Pubs Guide location.
