  • Eight-acre waterside site by the river Avon in Devon
  • A 15-minute drive from Kingsbridge; Salcombe 25 minutes
  • Direct river access, hot tubs and a sauna; river views at all pitches
Curious about river swimming? Head to Wildswim2sauna and take the plunge in a gorgeous eight-acre waterside site in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This site also makes it easy to warm up after chilly dips – hot tubs and a sauna are available to hire, adding just a dash of luxury to this otherwise off-grid experience. Set in the rural grounds of a 140-acre estate where you'll catch glimpses of a 12th-century farmhouse, this quiet south Devon site keeps its other facilities on the low-key end of the spectrum with its simple, well-maintained toilet block. Other adventures in the local area are very easy to come by, especially if you book one of the site-organised mackerel fishing trips, sea swims or coastal cruises that take place in and around Salcombe (25 minutes' drive). All the pitches at this secluded site come with river views and have plenty of space for families, couples or groups of friends. Barbecues are provided on site if you're up for an open-air sizzle, with supplies available close by in Modbury or Kingsbridge (both 15 minutes).

Otter tipi

Liked: Our recent stay at the campsite was an absolute delight from start to finish. From the moment we arrived until the day we left, Charles and his wife provided exceptional hospitality and made us feel right at home. With their warm and welcoming nature, they ensured that our stay was memorable and enjoyable. This review aims to highlight the incredible experience we had during our time at the campsite, the breathtaking surroundings, and the perfect opportunity it provided for us to disconnect from our digital lives and truly relax. Exemplary Hosts: First and foremost, I must commend Charles and his wife for their outstanding dedication to guest satisfaction. Throughout our stay, Charles frequently checked in on us to ensure that everything was to our liking. His genuine concern and willingness to go the extra mile made us feel valued and well-cared for. Moreover, he graciously shared his wealth of knowledge about the area, offering us fantastic recommendations for nearby attractions and places to visit. It was evident that Charles and his wife truly love what they do, and their passion for providing a remarkable camping experience shone through every interaction. Tipi Living: We opted to stay in one of the charming Tipis, and it turned out to be an excellent decision. Nestled right by the soothing stream, the location couldn't have been more picturesque. The tranquil sounds of running water provided a soothing background soundtrack to our stay, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The Tipi itself was clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully equipped. Although there was a slight discrepancy regarding the advertised bed, the king mattress provided was more than sufficient for a good night's sleep. In addition, the flashlight provided proved to be a useful amenity during the evenings. Nature's Escape: One of the most remarkable aspects of the campsite is its location in the heart of nature. Surrounded by lush greenery, towering trees, and breathtaking landscapes, the campsite offered a true escape from our busy lives. As soon as we arrived, we felt a sense of tranquility wash over us. With no Wi-Fi or mobile service, we were finally able to disconnect and immerse ourselves fully in the natural beauty that surrounded us. The absence of digital distractions allowed us to reconnect with nature, ourselves, and each other in ways that are often neglected in our daily routines. Pet-Friendly Paradise: Traveling with our beloved puppy made our stay even more enjoyable, and the campsite proved to be a pet-friendly paradise. Our furry friend had a fantastic time exploring the vast open spaces and splashing around in the nearby stream. The campsite's pet-friendly policy was accommodating and inclusive, ensuring that all members of our family had a wonderful experience. Seeing our puppy's joy and excitement as he discovered new sights and smells added an extra layer of happiness to our stay. Activities and Adventures: Beyond the enchanting campsite itself, Charles provided us with invaluable suggestions for nearby attractions and activities. We took full advantage of his recommendations and embarked on exciting adventures during our stay. From scenic hiking trails to picturesque viewpoints, we discovered hidden gems that we would have otherwise missed. The campsite's location served as an ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding areas, and we returned with unforgettable memories and a deep appreciation for the natural wonders that lay just beyond our campsite. Conclusion: In conclusion, our experience at the campsite exceeded all expectations. The warmth and hospitality demonstrated by Charles and his wife left a lasting impression on us. Their attentive care, coupled with the idyllic surroundings and the opportunity to disconnect from the digital world, made our stay truly exceptional. The Tipi provided a cozy and comfortable retreat and a pet-friendly environment.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The freedom to pitch where ever we felt most comfortable. The whole site was beautiful, clean and tidy. Greeted with a warm welcome from Charles and family

Disliked: There’s nothing to dislike, maybe the direct website is a bit confusing as it makes extras sound really expensive. This really isn’t the case. This isn’t a dislike but be aware that access to the site is down a typical Devonshire lane which should you meet another vehicle be a little challenging as there are few pass points

Local attractions

For a scenic three-part trip, head to Dartmouth (30 minutes' drive) for a 'round robin' tour of the Dart Estuary and English Riviera by boat, steam train and bus. You might also want to stick around at the set-off point – steeped in naval history and home to the 14th-century Dartmouth castle – or to take the ferry over the water to Coleton Fishacre House (just over an hour, including the crossing). You have a generous supply of sandy beaches and fish restaurants in Salcombe (25 minutes), as well as the wilder shingle-lined shores of Slapton Sands, right next to the birdwatching and photography opportunities of Slapton Ley Nature Reserve (25 minutes). For a bit of contrast after all that wildlife, steer yourself towards the lively seaside city of Plymouth (35 minutes) for shopping trips, kid-friendly attractions or sheltered swims at Tinside Lido. Wildswim2sauna is also a quick 15-minute drive from the wilds of Dartmoor National Park or half an hour from the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Bodmin Moor is an hour away, while trips to Exmoor National Park will take about an hour and 20 minutes.
