Wildswim2sauna: Tipi for hire

General

  • Eight-acre waterside site by the river Avon in Devon
  • A 15-minute drive from Kingsbridge; Salcombe 25 minutes
  • Direct river access, hot tubs and a sauna; river views at all pitches

Curious about river swimming? Head to Wildswim2sauna and take the plunge in a gorgeous eight-acre waterside site in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This site also makes it easy to warm up after chilly dips – hot tubs and a sauna are available to hire, adding just a dash of luxury to this otherwise off-grid experience.

Set in the rural grounds of a 140-acre estate where you'll catch glimpses of a 12th-century farmhouse, this quiet south Devon site keeps its other facilities on the low-key end of the spectrum with its simple, well-maintained toilet block. Other adventures in the local area are very easy to come by, especially if you book one of the site-organised mackerel fishing trips, sea swims or coastal cruises that take place in and around Salcombe (25 minutes' drive).

All the pitches at this secluded site come with river views and have plenty of space for families, couples or groups of friends. Barbecues are provided on site if you're up for an open-air sizzle, with supplies available close by in Modbury or Kingsbridge (both 15 minutes).

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Facilities/activities including Hot tub and Sauna are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The freedom to pitch where ever we felt most comfortable. The whole site was beautiful, clean and tidy.
Greeted with a warm welcome from Charles and family

    Disliked:

There’s nothing to dislike, maybe the direct website is a bit confusing as it makes extras sound really expensive. This really isn’t the case.
This isn’t a dislike but be aware that access to the site is down a typical Devonshire lane which should you meet another vehicle be a little challenging as there are few pass points

We absolutely loved the site, it was so beautiful, peaceful, absolutely idyllic next to the river with the cries often buzzard up ahead. Pitches were private and quiet and huge next to the picturesque river. The kids loved the area next to the wild swim with a rope swing that even the adults adored! The wildswimtosauna experience was amazing! Charlie was a perfect host knowing when to chat and make us feel at home and when to leave us to enjoy the peace. Charlie was also super fast at communicating by email and getting us booked in for the wild swimming experience. I am
Almost reluctant to say too much as I am not sure I want it to get busier or share the secret but this place was like something out of a film- off grid, basic (washed clean in the river) but truly magical and perfect. None of us were ready to leave and wished we had booked longer.
If you go- please look after it! Such a very special and unique campsite.

We stayed at Wildswim2sauna for 3 nights with our two fifteen year old boys and dog. Amazing location next to the river. Spacious pitches and host Charles was friendly and keen that we had a great time. It's off-grid with no signal and has a wild, back-to-nature vibe. 20 mins from lovely beaches at Salcombe and Bantham plus a lovely farm shop Aune Valley Meat on the way down to the valley. The sauna / river swim is well worth doing.

Campfire and seating area was fab.
    Peaceful.
    Resident dogs were very friendly.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the toilet facilities as well as not being able to access the part of the river with the swing due to private bookings.

I fully expected rather less than a 5* toilet block in this wild camping experience but the facilities really were very unpleasant. A composting toilet would be much more preferable in this location.

On our return home, I very politely got in touch with the manager who offered me a partial review for not posting a review. He has now decided that I am a scammer and that I have demanded a full refund- neither of these two things are true at all.

Instead of actually sending through the partial refund which he had offered, he has been incredibly rude via email and has forwarded me the details of previous customers (email addresses, full names and phone number).

In my opinion, this campsite is vastly overpriced and I would not recommend.

    Remote, spacious, quiet & wild.
Spent a lovely week here, 2 adults and 2 kids (13 & 6) and we had a fantastic time.
It is what it says on the tin - wild camping - although the area is well kept and not TOO wild.
We had a great time cooking on an open fire, splashing in the river, collecting herbs and making brews. With no mod cons, it's what we were looking for.
There's loads of space, so even with a few groups there, it still has that wild & remote feeling.
The Sauna & Hot tub were fab, we felt so clean after our "Detox" session.
Charles is a great host, made us feel very welcome at all times, as did his lovely wife and little boy.
I could have stayed all summer ;)

Having stayed on many commercial sites over the years I found this site to be a refreshing change. Plenty of open space, great views of the river from where ever you pitch.

This is a Back to basics site so don't expect your very own water tap, or showers but this is Wild Camping at its very best a safe and secure location for those with small children.

The communal cooking area was such a great idea to encourage the art of talking again to fellow campers, the fact that there was no / very limited wifi was a blessing, a real chance to down the tech and get involved in nature, we paddled in the clear running river, we sat and communicated with total strangers and enjoyed the absolute freedom to roam.

Charles the owner made our stay perfect. I would have liked to have a campfire near my own tent as once the sun goes down being at the bottom of the valley, the temperatures drop.

Thank you again for a great stay, we will be back for sure -

    Kind Regards

    Ash Ayling and Family.

Directions

Be careful if using satnav/Google Maps as several guests have been directed down farm gravel lanes resulting in bogged down/stuck cars. Keep to the tarmacked roads and do not enter gravel-laden farm lanes near the vicinity of the Avon Valley.

Local attractions

For a scenic three-part trip, head to Dartmouth (30 minutes' drive) for a 'round robin' tour of the Dart Estuary and English Riviera by boat, steam train and bus. You might also want to stick around at the set-off point – steeped in naval history and home to the 14th-century Dartmouth castle – or to take the ferry over the water to Coleton Fishacre House (just over an hour, including the crossing).

You have a generous supply of sandy beaches and fish restaurants in Salcombe (25 minutes), as well as the wilder shingle-lined shores of Slapton Sands, right next to the birdwatching and photography opportunities of Slapton Ley Nature Reserve (25 minutes). For a bit of contrast after all that wildlife, steer yourself towards the lively seaside city of Plymouth (35 minutes) for shopping trips, kid-friendly attractions or sheltered swims at Tinside Lido.

Wildswim2sauna is also a quick 15-minute drive from the wilds of Dartmoor National Park or half an hour from the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Bodmin Moor is an hour away, while trips to Exmoor National Park will take about an hour and 20 minutes.
