Eden Camping: Spring on site

General

  • Friendly, low-key Devon smallholding site with basic facilities
  • A 15-minute drive from Kingsbridge; 25 minutes from Salcombe
  • Quality local produce sold on site; a mile from the closest pub

Eden? It doesn't get much more 'back to basics' than that…

As the name suggests, Eden Camping is an excellent choice for those looking to pitch up in a modern-day Arcadian idyll: green pastures, indigenous woodlands, a spring and – perhaps most appropriately – an orchard make up the scenery at this pleasant south Devon site, which has the added attraction of being a mere 10-minute drive from the nearest beach.

'Sounds great', you'll be thinking, 'but wasn't there some kind of a catch with the whole garden utopia thing?' Not so at Eden Camping, where none of the tasty smallholding-produced food you buy from the on-site shop will come with a side serving of divine wrath – this, after all, is an all-organic affair, making such nasty side effects pretty near impossible…

With your tastebuds warmed up by site-produced food, you could venture away from base for a drink or slap-up meal at the nearest pub (20 minutes' walk), or stay close to home and set up a barbecue instead.

The facilities here include well-maintained toilets and solar showers; for a small fee the site staff can also recharge any gadgets that are out of juice. If you need a proper supermarket, Kingsbridge (15 minutes' drive) has a handful of them, plus takeaways, markets and a narrow-gauge railway.

Shower was a bag with a hose in, toilet was a makeshift shed with a toilet that didn’t flush. Location not easy to find, hard to get to and not close to anything. Unable to walk anywhere as roads are so dangerous. Barking dog 24/7 that tries to go for you if you walk past..

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback all is welcome.
Our site as explained on the description and verbally on arrival is an eco friendly site which means we care for nature and its surroundings as it is vital for the future. As quoted by yourselves the bag as described is actually a solar shower which is a very common practice for eco sites as no unnecessary power is used also the toilets are cleaned 3 times a day and eco friendly cleaner is in the toilet area for self cleaning after each use along with a row of sanitisers for campers to help themselves to along with a filtered spring water tap on the outside with hand wash always at hand. The toilet is also eco friendly due to this the flush button requires holding down for the flushing process as well as it being refilled throughout the day it has a tank on the bank which refills the toilet automatically again slower than usual due to trying to use less water initially we was going to provide a composting toilet like our neighbouring site but we understand people like to see an actual toilet. Anyone who goes to the country on a regular basis or lives there will understand the road system and how it works as it duals as a path and road we was out on a walk just yesterday as well as our local joggers and bikeriders again each has an opinion on the right way but in the countryside it is a shared road for public and drivers its an unspoken rule of the roads. Our dog is the most friendliest 7 month old puppy you could meet although he does have a loud bark but in no way is it a vicious one he is a hunterway/collie dog who are known for there loud bark we do appreciate first impressions of him say otherwise but that is due to his loudness as a new person comes onsite but we always reassure that he is friendly. Please also remove our personal area pictures off of this site as no unattended persons are aloud there that is our children's mass of toys and personal belongings that you did not have permission to be around or take a photo of again as first time campers it was not the site for yourselves this is our first year facilities improve over time we have stated that our site is supremely basic again thank you for your feedback also you left a glass bottle on the tractor drive if not seen that could of caused a major incident
Thank you

Eden Campsite is located on a smallholding in a peaceful, remote, bucolic area, with absolutely no light or noise pollution. Pitched at the far end of the field, with total privacy from other campers. Owners are very accommodating, happy to offer advice and whip you up a decent sausage sandwich over a chat in the morning, otherwise leave you to yourself. Yes, the toilet is a little rustic, but was cleaned regularly and this wasn't an issue for me, though might be for some people.

The coast from East Portlemouth to Torcross is varied, with lovely little coves and beaches. Kingsbridge is nearby with plenty of takeaways, cafes and pubs in the surrounding area.

I enjoyed my stay and will happily camp again if returning to the area. A real gem of a find. :)

Camped for 6 nights at the end of July while exploring the stunning SW coast path section in the South Devon AoNB.

    Disliked:

The solar shower could do with some screens erected around as there was no privacy here.

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us, I will add next summer we will have full shower block still with solar but through a rainwater shower system. We really loved having you stay with us the scenery at night is beautiful. You did find all the beautiful places to go east portalmouth is one of our favourite places here as its calm with lots of coves whilst Kingsbridge is also a stunning place to visit with a very tasty chippy and ice-cream place. We look forward to seeing you again

Local attractions

As it's surrounded by the sea on several sides, this part of the south Devon countryside has a fair few show-stopping beaches you'll want to get out to. East Portlemouth beach (20 minutes' drive) is a super sandy spot, with clear blue water and views over the seaside town of Salcombe (25 minutes from site); for bonus points, there's a ferry that connects both sides of the water.

Or would you rather lounge at Gara Rock beach (20 minutes), a slightly more rugged spot surrounded by dramatic cliffs and coast path trails? If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you could also head out to remote Moor Sand (a mile from Gara Rock), which is only accessible by footpath.

More family-friendly attractions in the area include Dartmouth Castle (35 minutes), whose medieval walls make a nice contrast with the 1920s architecture on display at Coleton Fishacre House (an hour and 10 minutes). Fancy peering into Cornwall? Get yourself to Plymouth (an hour) and spy out boats bobbing along the Cornish coast from atop its Royal Citadel. On your way downhill into the city centre, you might also feel like stopping at the city's aquarium to see what's swimming in its huge glass tanks.
