  • Luxury family bell tents on the south Devon coast
  • A 10-minute drive to Salcombe; 25 minutes to Bigbury-on-Sea
  • Firepit and kitchen provided; access to pizza oven and barbecue area
Devon coast and countryside all at the same time? Stay at Ducklings Den, in the splendid South Hams area, and you’ll have an orchard on one side and views all the way down to the sea a short walk away on the other. It’s part of a working sheep farm and, as the name suggests, your nearest neighbours will be the farm’s resident ducks. Your accommodation here is a single fully furnished bell tent that’s all geared up for a luxury family holiday (and that includes the family dog, if you have one). It’s been set up with a comfy double bed and two small singles (best suited to children), plus all sorts of handy bits including bedding, towels and fairy lights. All the essentials are sorted here, and guests have access to a shared camping toilet and shower unit, plus extra toilets a short walk away in the farmhouse. A little kitchen is provided too, with a mini fridge, a kettle, a gas burner, various utensils and access to a washing-up area that's also got a shared fridge-freezer. More in the mood for alfresco cooking? The tent has its own firepit just outside, and you’ll also have access to the communal barbecue and pizza oven. This is all set up in a lovely part of the farm near the duck pond, with seating for your outdoor meals and drinks. There are lots of ways to spend time in the open air around here – you can join a footpath down to the beach at Hope Cove just outside the farm, and it’s just a few minutes’ drive to the likes of Salcombe, Bantham and Thurlestone.

Bell tent

Liked: Excellent stay at Ducklings Den, the bell tents were lovely, really well equipped, the beds were comfy and warm. We were allowed to bring a gazebo which was lovely so we had more space for food ans outdoor games etc. My daughter who is 8, really enjoyed staying here, she loved seeing the animals. The farm was very peaceful and I don’t have anything negative to say. Looking forward to our return :)

Disliked: Nothing I can think of.

Bell tent

Liked: The facilities that come with the bell Tent you can not complain. The beds were very comfortable and the extra blankets kept you nice and cosy. The shared BBQ and Pizza was a nice touch but unfortunately we did not use it due to bad weather.

Disliked: The two bell tents are just adjacent a single farm track that seemed like some locals were using as a cut through so at time you had cars coming through which is not ideal if you have young children. The toilet and shower facilities are adequate if you are the only family staying at the site but if there are more people staying just 1 shower and toilet is not sufficent enough.

Bell tent

Liked: Everything was clean, tidy. Even though there was only one toilet which was in with the shower it was immaculate! Tea, coffee, milk and biscuits were a lovely touch. And providing firewood was great. Washing up facilities were good and plates etc. Lovely surroundings and easy walk to hope cove

Disliked: Confusion as to wht bins to use for recycling except cans or glass. But that's not really downside just me being picky. No Internet signal/very intermittent. But again, not essential when you are in a lovely place like that.

Bell tent

Liked: We loved the remote location which was quiet and safe for the kids to play. Alice was a great host. My little was ill and Alice was there within minutes to help us out. The bell tents were surprisingly spacious and everything was there ready to use such as towels, bedding etc. The bbq area was brilliant as we had family to visit. Shower room and toilet were very clean.

Disliked: We would've liked a bit more privacy from the bell tent adjacent.

Bell tent

Liked: Nice peaceful spot, with just two bell tents in the pitch. Good facilities in the tent. Excellent bathroom facilities - very clean and nice with good hot shower.

Disliked: Quite cold in the spring as no heater inside the tent but lots of blankets provided and fire pit outside. Gas cooker didn't work very well. Better lighting inside would have been good too as solar lamp not bright at all.

Local attractions

Your first port of call should certainly be Hope Cove – the village is a mile away and has two lovely beaches (with lifeguards in summer) along with pubs and places to eat. It’s a good place to pick up the coast path too, for a walk up to South Milton Sands or all the way round to Salcombe. Salcombe (10 minutes’ drive) is worth a visit in its own right too – it’s home to the National Trust’s Overbeck’s Garden and gin tours at the Salcombe Distilling Company, as well as a couple of beaches that are great for watersports and boat hire. There are more lovely beaches at places like Bantham (15 minutes), Blackpool Sands (half an hour) and Bigbury-on-Sea (25 minutes), where you can take a ride on the sea tractor out to Burgh Island. If you fancy a change of scenery though, take a day out in Plymouth (45 minutes), meet the animals at Dartmoor Zoo (40 minutes) or head out for a hike in the Dartmoor National Park (half an hour).
