General

  • Working farm site on the southern edge of Dartmoor
  • A range of accommodation, all with parking alongside
  • Dogs on leads welcome and small campfires allowed

Kayakers, canoeists, families, couples and groups have all been known to bunk down at the friendly Harford Bunkhouse and Camping, a working farm on the southern edge of Dartmoor where the main sounds you’ll hear are the site animals – not a baaaaad sound to wake up to…

Whichever accommodation you pick here, all guests have use of the roomy and well equipped farmhouse-style kitchen, spacious games room with pool table, and toilet and shower block within the camping barns buildings.

Harford Bunkhouse is a short distance from the river and a mile and a half from the old town of Ivybridge with several pubs, Tesco and the rated Riverbank restaurant in the Glanvilles Mill shopping centre. It welcomes dogs (on leads at all times, please) and allows small campfires – although fires (and barbecues) are at the owners’ discretion, so please ask before you spark one up.

Please note

If you would like a free pick-up from Ivybridge station, please let us know in the 'special requests' section of the booking form.

An affordable campsite that has great facilities and nice views. 20/06/2017

Lots of space for pitches and great views. When we stayed it was luckily a very hot weekend. Very friendly and laid back staff, within striking distance of great fishing (the reason we went) on the coast.

    Disliked:

The peacock decided 5am was time to flex his vocal chords! Didn't bother us that much, it was funny more than anything.

Great cabin. Bare essentials-just what we wanted. Toilet and kitchen facilities all clean and not too far from cabin. Left to get on with it-which suits us fine. Lovely views. We were lucky with the beautiful weather and that no one else had booked into the site. Kids loved the pigs and peacocks. Will be returning to stay again. Great walk up to butterbrook.

    Disliked:

Farm dog barked around the cabin at night setting off our dogs, Cabin creaks really loudly when windy-both kept me awake at night. Pods opposite cabin are a bit close, we were lucky to have the place to ourselves as prefer to be more private and get away from others! But these were minor things that all in all didn't greatly effect our stay as everything else was just what we wanted, we loved it.

The pool table and the shower

    Disliked:

Cold- heating had not been put on in advance of our arrival and it was so cold we all had to keep our coats on for hours. When it did come on it didn't stay on long, had we not brought our blow heater we would have been very uncomfortable.
Not clean - all crockery and cutlery had to be washed before we could use it, and all the surfaces had to be cleaned before use.
Not as described - description said and photos showed a room with double bed, there was no such thing, just lots of bunk beds in varying states. The kids felt the beds were not clean. The middle room smelt mouldy also.

Weather wasn't great but bunkhouse was toasty-warm and cosy. Sleeping, washing and cooking facilities plentiful and excellent. Farm is out in the countryside, yet only minutes from the 'bright lights' of Ivybridge.
Its a working farm, so might need to keep a good eye on younger children. Our kids are older. Dogs understandably on leads at all times.
Lovely to meet Rex, and the pigs too.
Hope to return sometime soon. x

    Disliked:

no wifi - and 3G is intermittment to say the least.
TV mentioned is pretty much out of commission

Decent place to stay with good facilities 21/10/2016

Pretty good facilities - Plenty of showers and toilets as well as a microwave, fridge and a couple of sinks.
Large amount of space to set up your tent.
Very helpful automatic lights near the facilities for night escapades!
The site was close enough to town to be accessible but not close enough to hear any noise pollution.

    Disliked:

The campsite was on a slight hill but there are small areas which aren't too bad.
On arrival if there is nobody around you must ring their mobile but there is pretty much no signal so it took me about 10 minutes of walking around in circles to find some. (Maybe an intercom would work better)
The small fridge was filled with very out of date things including a moldy milk bottle.

Peaceful location, top showers, nice animals, near Ivybridge town 12/09/2016

The owners were very friendly, animals were lovely to see and be around too. Campsite gives a great view of the moor. You really feel as though you could be on the moor itself, it's that close. Lots of space and privacy. Excellent shower facilities; only five or so, but easy to use, superbly clean, and a joy to use, really. A mile up the road from Ivybridge, a small town that will have a shop for whatever your needs, a train station, as well as Inns and pubs. Was a great experience and didn't feel let down.
    Thank you for having us,
    - Rupert & Elliot Gates

    Disliked:

Hard to find owners if you need any help with anything or have questions, but take into consideration this is a working farm. The people there are easy to talk to and friendly once you can find them.
The sinks could be placed in better areas - the tiny sink for washing your hands is right next to a large bin in the utility room; if people are cleaning cutlery, you feel you'd rather be in a seperate room brushing your teeth without others watching you while you do it.
Nothing to really complain about at all, a guaranteed enjoyable experience :)

Not much to say here, staff were friendly and the dogs, Peacocks and chickens kept me amused but that's about all.

    Disliked:

Be advised there are no sign posts until you get to the tiny track that leads to the site so not easy to find. Also the access from Coal road take you on a single track for about 2 km with very narrow points and limited passing points. The field in a slope so not ideal.

    The pig

    Disliked:

We arrived after lunch to find no-one around but about 3 phone numbers, which when there is little, to say all but none-existing mobile coverage, isn't very helpful. Finally got through to a pleasant sounding lady who said someone would be up shortly. We were then shown the pod, which had bunk-style beds with plastic covered matresses, not the "1 double futon, 1 double foam pull-out bed, and 2 single foam pull-out beds" shown in the pics and written of in the description, the "please bring your sleeping bags" forgot to mention pillows too, and the toilet and kitchen facilities..... We weren't shown the "roomy and well equipped farmhouse-style kitchen and spacious games room with pool table", so don't know if it exists, but were shown the "loo and shower block within the camping barns buildings" where there was a fridge and microwave right next to the toilet block...... "Fortunately" for us, the friend and family we were meant to meet had been very ill that morning so we decided to forfeit the campsite and go and stay in a travelodge near Thame, left us out of pocket but very relieved not to be staying...

From the manager...

Sorry for any inconvenience and stress. We have read your comments and will be correcting our details and photos regarding the Pods.
We will refund your payment in full.

Regards

Julie

Local attractions

Harford Bunkhouse and Camping is right on Dartmoor, with moor than enough stuff in the area for all ages and inclinations, including poking around tiny traditional villages, farm sites and zoos, old houses and ancient castles, and active options like watersports, climbing, hiking and biking. And hacking: Ivybridge has a couple of riding schools for group and private lesson, and there are miles of bridleways, old byways and moorland routes around Dartmoor.

Seeing the Dartmoor ponies is also a must (aw, so cute): you’ll spot them all over the moors even if driving, but if you or the kids want to get up close, pony treks are available from several companies, and the Original Miniature Pony Centre at Moretonhamstead gives kids the chance to take a better look (double check opening times before you book as they have seasonal opening).

Also nearby for mini naturalists is the Dartmoor Zoological Park, subject of the book and film We Bought a Zoo and housing big cats, monkeys, snakes and plenty more from around the globe; and the National Marine Aquarium less than ten miles away in Plymouth.

Three top walking trails are within a couple of miles of Harford Bunkhouse: the Erme Valley Trail, the Erme-Plym Trail and the Two Moors coast to coast Way from Ivybridge on the south coast to Lynmouth, Exmoor on the north. This in turn connects at various places to other long-distance paths including the Tarka Trail, the South West Coast Path and the Dartmoor Way.

Walking too much faff? Cast off peacefully with the fishing opps in the area, from guided fly fishing trips on Dartmoor to fishing for salmon and trout on the River Erme.
