Watermouth Valley Camping Park: Sloping grass pitches

General

  • Family-run site with sea views and direct access to Broadsands beach
  • A 10-minute drive to Ilfracombe; 25 minutes to Woolacombe beach
  • On-site shop with maps available; access to the South West Coast Path

Everyone in… it’s time for a beach break on the edge of Exmoor National Park. In one direction, Watermouth Valley Camping Park has direct access to the steps that go down the cliff and onto Broadsands beach. In the other direction, a five-minute walk will get you to Watermouth Bay, where there’s fabulous rock fishing, good launching facilities and spectacular coastal walks.

That’s not all, believe it or not. The Victorian town of Ilfracombe is 10 minutes’ drive away and surfing beaches such as Woolacombe beach (25 minutes’ drive) and Croyde beach (35 minutes) are also within driving distance. Further on, characterful Lynton and Lynmouth (half an hour) can be found too.

Of course, the site is right on the South West Coast Path around North Devon, so it’s a very wise base for hiking fans (just pick up a map of the local area from the site’s shop).

What about Watermouth Valley Camping Park itself? Well, the family-run, dog-friendly site has sea views and a sheltered valley where guests can relax and take in the scenery. There’s a children’s adventure playground for kids to let off steam, a handy on-site shop and a modern, clean amenities block with hot showers and electric points for hair dryers, straighteners and razors.

The site gets very popular with families during the school summer holidays (May through to September), but at other times, it’s quiet and peaceful and attracts couples and solo travellers.

Great site, great pitches at our end, large pitch for our camper van, awning with loads more room to use if we wanted. Food vans and cake stalls on site most nights. Great place for walking, lovely beach nearby (with 240 steps but worth it). Our end of the site was lovely and quiet and lots of space between pitches. The other end seemed less spacious though. Good toilet and shower facilities which were always clean and tidy. Good washing up facilities. Great site, can't fault it.

We pitched in the sea-view area, right at the top of the hill. The view was amazing! A short walk to the beach which is also owed by the camping park, its hard work getting up and down the stairs with dogs but so worth it! It reminded me of being in Thailand.

Every member of staff that worked there were welcoming from start to finish. We even had one come and visit us at our tent and he was lovely to chat with.

Absolutely love that they have, Curry Night, Pizza Night and Roast Dinners on a Sunday. We wish we stayed longer to see what other nights they do.

Showers and Toilets were very clean every time we used them.

We will definitely be coming back but next time we have spotted an allocated pitch.

This is a lovely family campsite with enough amenities to make camping with a young family pleasant and easy but enough simplicity to feel like a real campsite not a holiday park. Highlights would be...
•the shower blocks. 3 seperate blocks so plenty of showers and toilets. Always immaculately clean and plenty of soap. The cubicles in the newest block were big enough for myself and all 4 children to easily supervise toilet breaks and teeth brushing. They are thoughtfully laid out with plenty of "dry space" for towels and clean clothes and ample hooks. There is also a secret baby room which is beautiful and well equipped with a changing table and baby bath, ask at reception about it as it is not advertised or clearly marked to keep it available for young children.
•range of amenities; a well stocked shop, ice pack freezing, laundrette, bricks to rest disposable barbecues on, excellent park and well contained seperate toddler play area and indoor games room.
•food vans that visit for takeaway options. The pizza especially was AMAZING!
    • Friendly, helpful and polite staff team. Very accommodating and kind.
    • surprisingly easy to get to public transport! The bus stop is a 2 minute walk to get to local towns and beaches so you can definitely have car free days. We really enjoyed our trip to Ilfracombe on The Sunseeker route.

    Disliked:

These aren't dislikes as such but maybe advice for others...?
    • the unallocated tent pitches are up a huge hill from the toilets and on quite a sloping field. If I could change one thing I would have booked an allocated space/electric hook.up space instead to avoid the hill. The views up there are amazing but with a 1 and 3 year old the hill was a bit of a nightmare (although my calf muscles have had a thorough work out!)
    • again if you have young children the campsite beach is pretty difficult to access. The steps down are incredibly steep and feel quite perilous. The beach is gorgeous and if you are physically fit and don't have to carry a wriggly toddler and coax a terrified 3 year old it would definitely be worth it but it was a terrifying descent and ascent for us.

Local attractions

Time to tick off the North Devon coves and harbours? Start with splendid Combe Martin (five minutes’ drive), a seaside resort with a sheltered cove for peaceful days on the sand. Surfers might want to slide on over to Saunton Sands (half an hour), while those seeking scenic clifftop hikes will get on well with the Valley of Rocks’ (35 minutes) wild goats and sea views.

Take off on a fishing trip or a sea safari from Ilfracombe Harbour (10 minutes). Lundy Island is one of the most popular tour spots for such boat trips. There’s a working lifeboat station in the harbour too if that sort of stuff entertains you.

Once you’ve checked out the lifeboats, turn back time a little with a trip to Arlington Court (20 minutes), a National Trust site with a Regency house and a carriage museum. Or perhaps all the way back to the time of dinosaurs? Kids are likely to love the life-sized dino models at Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (10 minutes) and its zoo and fossil museum.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (18.9 miles)
  • National Waterfront Museum (28.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (5.8 miles)
  • Heddon Valley (5.9 miles)
