Steps lead to the private cove

General

  • Family friendly-site with spectacular views out to sea
  • Private stretch of beach leading to a secluded cove
  • Pool, kids' clubs, soft play and playground

Ever wanted to channel your inner mermaid? Sandaway Beach Holiday Park near Ilfracombe in Devon has a private stretch of beach leading to the secret spot of Mermaids Cove for secluded swims and sunbathes. (If you happen to glimpse a topless mermaid, say the site staff, just look the other way…)

The park is placed right on the edge of the ocean on a low cliff, with the rocky foreshore and sand of the private beach a few minutes’ stroll down a purty stepped path. If you’re not scrambling over the rocks to Mermaids Cove, soak up the rays at the sun trap here; just make sure you’re aware of the tide times before you go down.

Away from the beach, there’s plenty happening parkwise for those who might get restless just soaking up the sun: Sandaway Beach is a John Fowler Holiday Parks site so is crammed with things to do for merpeople of all sizes – kids’ clubs for little squirts, free heated outdoor pool, indoor soft play area and an outdoor playground alongside pool tables, amusements and an internet café.

Guests can also use the facilities at Sandaway Beach’s sister park Combe Martin Beach Holiday Park a few minutes away: this one has its own private beach too (Newberry) and the Sea Spray Club for beachside drinks and dining as well as evening entertainment and more kids’ clubs.

Vittles at Sandaway are covered with the pub grub and basket meals at the Smugglers Bar, where there’s also evening entertainment, free wifi and a gape at Exmoor and sea views (kids are welcome in the pub). Golf, fishing, watersports and farm parks are all close to hand nearby.

This site is a member of John Fowler Holidays group.

Please note

The grocery shop is open between 29/03 and 31/10.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 19/04 and 31/10 (subject to weather conditions).

The restaurant is open between 29/03 and 31/10.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

    Staff - friendly/helpful
Great location for shorth walk to Coombe Martin and short drive to Ilfracombe.
Great little shop onsite, and good facilities within the Clubhouse.

    Disliked:

Would have been nice to have had a Shower block next to the Pods and camping site - there is a toilet only block close by, but showers were at the top of the park amongst the Static caravans.

Low level lighting along the gravel path to the pods and gravel path/stepping stones to the Pods themselves would have been beneficial - particularly as we arrived on a rather dark and very rainy evening.

We stayed in Safari tent 1 which had an amazing view of the sea (Safari tent 2 is behind this and doesn't have such a great view). We had everything that we needed in the tent with all kitchen supplies and bedding provided for us. There was also a heater to use overnight. The toilets were nearby and clean and the car park was really close so we didn't have far to carry our belongings. Remember to bring a torch/lantern as although there are two bedside lamps in the tent there are no other lights and limited plug sockets! We had a lovely relaxed weekend, the view from the porch is beautiful, I can't wait to go back next year.

    1. Had to wait 1 hour in reception for them to find my booking.

    2. Pitch was unbelievably uneven (hurt my neck trying to keep myself in bed and had to pay £45.00 for treatment).

    3. Was warned that the pitch was uneven and was told that if it's too bad come back and they will sort it. I went back and said we couldn't sleep there and they didn't give a fuck. There was 3 other free level pitches available and they didn't want us going on them.

    4. Couldn't have a shower because the shower was scalding hot. They will have a issue soon when a kid gets burnt.

    5. The pool was closed! What's the point!

We liked the pool and park setting next to the coastline. The staff were friendly and helpful.
The juds like Freddie fox although didnt engage with activities due to timings etc. The kids loved the outdoor play area .

    Disliked:

This is not a park for camping. Its noisy and ill equipped for those looking for tranquil purpose built campsites. The camping area is misleading online with pictures depicting other devon sites.
Sandaway has a small grass area directly in front of entrance of busy road, adjacent to club house and loud music and compere until late. The camping green has a road round it feeding the mobile homes which overlook. The toilets are not situated with camping area which at night time with small children isnt great.
They are pretty clean although pretty wet with puddles at doorway.
Two washing up basins . There is a shop.
The 10 available pitches are not marked out so get there early or it's abit of a free for all with uneven pitch sizes depending on where people set up. Criss Cross of wires sharing a few electric points. It's on a slight slope whose gradient increases at furthest end of green but it is the furthest away from road and clubhouse .
We were blighted by rain and wind which didnt help but I think the above is factually accurate.

Views from all around the site were beautiful
    Showers and toilets were clean
Good location for both Combe Martin and Ilfracombe.

    Disliked:

Bar are very small and hot. Didn't seem to be enough seating for the amount of people.
Steep hill to get from safari tent up to main bar area and showers etc. This was not stated anywhere on the website when booking.

Local attractions

The fishing village of Combe Martin is around five minutes' stroll, for boat trips, a 13th-century church and another beach: one of six within easy driving distance. Combe Martin also has the Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park with over 250 species of wildlife, animatronic dinosaurs, a canyon train ride and swimming with sea lions.

Ilfracombe is four miles from Sandaway, with several beaches here and between Ilfracombe and the three-mile stretch at Woolacombe 10 minutes’ drive away. The hand-carved Tunnels beaches are a hoot for exploring the Victorian etiquette of the day and should keep kids amused for hours.

Arty sorts visting Ilfracombe should pack paintbox and inspiration: the town has eight art galleries (Damien Hirst owns several properties here and the controversial Hirst statue Verity stands at the harbour entrance). If your art loving is of a more dramatic type, get along to the award-winning Landmark Theatre, aka Madonna’s Bra (you’ll see why when you get there. The kids hopefully will not...)

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (18.6 miles)
  • National Waterfront Museum (28.7 miles)

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (5.0 miles)
