Sandaway Beach Holiday Park: Pitching field

General

  • Family friendly-site with spectacular views out to sea
  • Private stretch of beach leading to a secluded cove
  • Pool, kids' clubs, soft play and playground

Ever wanted to channel your inner mermaid? Sandaway Beach Holiday Park near Ilfracombe in Devon has a private stretch of beach leading to the secret spot of Mermaids Cove for secluded swims and sunbathes. (If you happen to glimpse a topless mermaid, say the site staff, just look the other way…)

The park is placed right on the edge of the ocean on a low cliff, with the rocky foreshore and sand of the private beach a few minutes’ stroll down a purty stepped path. If you’re not scrambling over the rocks to Mermaids Cove, soak up the rays at the sun trap here; just make sure you’re aware of the tide times before you go down.

Away from the beach, there’s plenty happening parkwise for those who might get restless just soaking up the sun: Sandaway Beach is a John Fowler Holiday Parks site so is crammed with things to do for merpeople of all sizes – kids’ clubs for little squirts, free heated outdoor pool, indoor soft play area and an outdoor playground alongside pool tables, amusements and an internet café.

Guests can also use the facilities at Sandaway Beach’s sister park Combe Martin Beach Holiday Park a few minutes away: this one has its own private beach too (Newberry) and the Sea Spray Club for beachside drinks and dining as well as evening entertainment and more kids’ clubs.

Vittles at Sandaway are covered with the pub grub and basket meals at the Smugglers Bar, where there’s also evening entertainment, free wifi and a gape at Exmoor and sea views (kids are welcome in the pub). Golf, fishing, watersports and farm parks are all close to hand nearby.

This site is a member of John Fowler Holidays group.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 27/03 and 30/10 (subject to weather conditions).

The restaurant is open between 27/03 and 30/10.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

The grocery shop is open between 27/03 and 30/10.

    Beach

    Disliked:

Site is absolutely apauling really run down its dirty in all areas toilets/pitches/walk down to the beach is overgrown with nettles we would never visit a John Fowler site again. I'm not sure what this site has done regarding maintenance throughout the covid period.
The toilets was like school toilets just apauling.
The Pitch Dirty rubbish face mask just left grass was never cut anywhere throughout our stay.
The nettles all overgrown down to the beach making it Impossible to hold the hand rails up & down the steep path.
The whole site should be avoided. When we spoke to others on site some tourers had travelled from other John Fowlers sites & these where no better they said.
If you have a motorhome seriously don't bother you have no drive on for waste water the water refill is from taps not accessable it's from grass points that are not level & access is a joke.
Please read this review John Fowler as the site has huge potential but it seems you are taking money but showing no investment.to the site shame on you for such a dirty impractical use of a site that could be great.
I had to request that the lady on arrival changed my pitch as it was so dirty & boggy pitch 8 was not much better but was better than pitch 7 personally I would have liked myoney back & camped in a lay-by as it would have been cleaner.

Lovely clean campsite located next to the shop and clubhouse . Short walk away from a a few shops (down a very steep hill ) bus stop 2 minutes away .

    Disliked:

Campsite advertised 10 camping pitches . There's a small patch of grass with slab stones marking the pitches the tents were crammed together guy rope criss crosses each other .....
The campsite entrance is right in front of the camping area there is a very busy road running passed there was no gate or barrier to stop children running out 😬
The showers were very hot ( which was lovely if like myself you like it hot ) but way to hot for children.

    Disliked:

    1. Showers too hot. Would not put a child under it
    2. Cold water pressure on toilets to high, water jumped sing and wet our clothes
    3. Wet grass cuttings stuck to shoes and made feet wet, walked into camper van.
    4. Painful trying to buy a drink in the clubhouse. Trying to sign up for sage pay. Would be better if you used the common methods such as PayPal instead of insisting on lesser used methods. This made us eat and drink else where.
    5. No care of the paths allowing mud to spread over the paths narrowing the walkable sections.
    6. The ladies showers had 2 showers and 2 WCs out of order.

Great location for shorth walk to Coombe Martin and short drive to Ilfracombe.
Great little shop onsite, and good facilities within the Clubhouse.

    Disliked:

Would have been nice to have had a Shower block next to the Pods and camping site - there is a toilet only block close by, but showers were at the top of the park amongst the Static caravans.

Low level lighting along the gravel path to the pods and gravel path/stepping stones to the Pods themselves would have been beneficial - particularly as we arrived on a rather dark and very rainy evening.

Local attractions

The fishing village of Combe Martin is around five minutes' stroll, for boat trips, a 13th-century church and another beach: one of six within easy driving distance. Combe Martin also has the Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park with over 250 species of wildlife, animatronic dinosaurs, a canyon train ride and swimming with sea lions.

Ilfracombe is four miles from Sandaway, with several beaches here and between Ilfracombe and the three-mile stretch at Woolacombe 10 minutes’ drive away. The hand-carved Tunnels beaches are a hoot for exploring the Victorian etiquette of the day and should keep kids amused for hours.

Arty sorts visting Ilfracombe should pack paintbox and inspiration: the town has eight art galleries (Damien Hirst owns several properties here and the controversial Hirst statue Verity stands at the harbour entrance). If your art loving is of a more dramatic type, get along to the award-winning Landmark Theatre, aka Madonna’s Bra (you’ll see why when you get there. The kids hopefully will not...)

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (18.6 miles)
  • National Waterfront Museum (28.7 miles)

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (5.0 miles)
  • Heddon Valley (5.1 miles)
