General

  • Family friendly-site with spectacular views out to sea
  • Private stretch of beach leading to a secluded cove
  • Pool, kids' clubs, soft play and playground

Ever wanted to channel your inner mermaid? Sandaway Beach Holiday Park near Ilfracombe in Devon has a private stretch of beach, leading to the secret spot of Mermaids Cove for secluded swims and sunbathes. (If you happen to glimpse a topless mermaid, say the site staff, just look the other way…)

The park is placed right on the edge of the ocean on a low cliff, with the rocky foreshore and sand of the private beach a mere three minutes’ stroll down a purty stepped path. If you’re not scrambling over the rocks to Mermaids Cove, soak up the rays at the sun trap here (make sure you’re aware of the tide times before you go down).

Away from the beach, there’s plenty happening parkwise for those who might get restless just soaking up the sun: Sandaway Beach is a John Fowler Holiday Parks site so is crammed with things to do for merpeople of all sizes – kids’ clubs for little squirts, free heated outdoor pool, indoor soft play area and an outdoor playground alongside pool tables, amusements and an internet café.

Guests can also use the facilities at Sandaway Beach’s sister park Combe Martin Beach Holiday Park a few minutes away: this one has its own private beach too (Newberry) and the Sea Spray Club for beachside drinks and dining as well as evening entertainment and more kids’ clubs.

Vittles at Sandaway are covered with the pub grub and basket meals at the Smugglers Bar, where there’s also evening entertainment, free wifi and a gape at the Exmoor and sea views (children are welcome in the pub). Golf, fishing, watersports and farm parks are all close to hand nearby.

This site is a member of John Fowler Holidays group.

Play area was nice for the children, location is great. Combe Martin is a lovely area with plenty of places to eat.

    Disliked:

This is a typical John Fowler site. It is long overdue some TLC. The bathrooms do not seem to be cleaned very regularly, and as the doors to not auto-close you end up with lots of bugs helping you go to the toilet.
The pitches themselves are very disorganised. They are not particularly will marked out. If you are unlucky enough to be on the end pitches, then you will be on quite a steep incline. I have stayed on much better campsites!

Lovely site with well priced food in café and great location

    Disliked:

Entertainment was poor. Karaoke two nights running is a cop out. We could understand it in the winter but although it is not school holidays it was still July. Plenty of people on site but most left early. Also ladies toilets were permanently wet due to a broken toilet apartvfrom that they were generally clean

The shower room were a total disgrace .The pressure on the showers were rubbish I'd have gotten wetter in the rain !! The kids entertainment was an absolute disgrace .A cheeky gobby probably about 17 yr old girl going on like she was 50 told one dad of a 16 nth old baby boy that if he didn't keep his son off the stage they would be removed off the site by senior managements or if he didn't keep his son under control she would have to come down on him hard !! I was gobsmacked and the poor man trying to explain he's a baby the more you try keeping him off the stage the more he would try .Then the cheeky madam came outside to were we decided to sit after listening to enough of her lip she noticed a car double parked that had gone to check in and shouts to me !!Hey mum don't they realise it's a one way system and there still in the uk to which I just smiled and she said sorry I call everyone mum as I don't know your name !! It was no type of kids club it was 20 minutes of disorganised rubbish when kids danced to 4 songs and there was about 10 kids on the stage to which we was told we have never seen it so packed ...well that said it all we certainly won't be back or would I recommend anyone else to go .Worst campsite ever

The view from our camping pod was beautiful. My 4 and 2 year old loved the mermaid cove. Food on site was lovely.

    Disliked:

After I had booked it I read alot of bad reviews but like to make my own mind up. Before we arrived I contacted the site to plan what I needed to take but took 3 times for them to reply. We arrived early but reception staff were friendly and helpful but were told the kids club was for over 5's. Very hilly so little ones wanted carrying everywhere. Camping pods didn't have enough bedding and contacted reception who gave us a double set instead of single but made do. The safari tents had very noisy people in them so most of our stay was spent listening to young lads blasting music and swearing constantly! Not good with little ones. We decided to leave the day before due to the noise, couldn't face another night of it! Was looking forward to the children's club as read good reviews but was very disappointed. Sang 2 songs and played one on screen game that not everyone had a go of and that was it! It was very hot during our stay so for health and safety my kids only got to see the characters twice. On one night they had the heating on that they couldn't turn off so was taken outside to play games in the hot sun with no shade and the stripeys were more bothered about having a drink than playing with the children! My children were also looking forward to the swimming pool but as it was a heated pool it was closed, every time we made it up the hill, due to the heat. The area is lovely with lots to do nearby but we will not be returning here.

Directions

Leave the M5 at Junction 27 and take the A361 towards Barnstaple for 26 miles. Then go onto the A399 towards Combe Martin. Just past Combe Martin seafront you’ll find the park 500 yards up the hill, on the right.

Local attractions

A six-minute stroll from Sandaway Beach Holiday Park will take you to the fishing village of Combe Martin for boat trips, pubs, restaurants, thirteenth century church and another beach: one of six within easy driving distance of the park. Combe Martin also has the Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park with over 250 species of wildlife, animatronic dinosaurs, a canyon train ride and swimming with sea lions.

Just over a mile away from Sandaway there’s the hamlet and harbour at Watermouth with Watermouth Castle and theme park; there’s a Victorian museum, an underground water show and suits of armour to eye nervously in the castle, and a theatre, rides and an adventure playground outside.

The seaside town of Ilfracombe is four miles from Sandaway and there are several beaches here and between Ilfracombe and the three-mile stretch at Woolacombe ten minutes’ drive away: the hand-carved Tunnels beaches are a hoot for exploring the Victorian etiquette of the day and should keep the kids amused for hours.

Arty sorts visting Ilfracombe should pack their paintbox and inspiration: the town has a whopping total of eight art galleries (Damien Hirst owns several properties here) and the controversial Hirst statue Verity stands at the entrance to the harbour. If your art loving is of a more dramatic type, take yourself along to the award-winning Landmark Theatre, aka Madonna’s Bra (you’ll see why when you get there. The kids hopefully will not.)

Day trippers feeling less sporty can reach Barnstaple, Dartmoor, Cornwall, cobbled and carfree Clovelly, Lynmouth, Lynton and loads more within driving distance, or take the kids along to a(nother) theme park: Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep, both outside Bideford, should tire them out nicely.

Leaving the car behind? A bus service runs near Sandaway Beach Holiday Park on most days from March to October.

Must see
