  • Wild camping on a farm with stunning views of the Sterridge Valley
  • A 15-minute drive from Exmoor National Park and Ilfracombe
  • Campfire area and kids' mud kitchen; excellent stargazing on site
Keep It Wild is, as the name suggests, a wild camping site in the Devon countryside, with gorgeous views over fields and woodland down into the Sterridge Valley. Guests here are welcome to pick their own pitch from the area given over to open-air stays: perhaps choose one close to the swings if you’ve got kids to keep an eye on, gather in a little cluster with pals or set off in towards a quieter corner if you’re in search of a more secluded stay that might include a little stargazing (this is an area of very low light pollution). This is a laidback, back-to-nature type of place, with a log circle set up around a campfire area for cosy sociable evenings, a mud kitchen where the nippers can get themselves happily mucky and a short circular walk that’ll give you a good tour of some of the site’s woodland corners (and a chance for dogs to stretch their legs too). It’s all mighty peaceful, with just a handful of pitches on site, and the owners respectfully ask that you help keep it that way by keeping the noise down after 10.30pm. Facilities on site include a cold water tap, a washing-up area and a compost toilet in a cosy little shed; other handy little things include bricks to set up disposable barbecues on and a wheelbarrow to cart around any heavy stuff. The owners live on site and are happy to help out with ideas for walks and outings or sorting out such things as lending barbecues or sorting out breakfast or meat boxes (contact them in advance if you’d like to enquire about any of these bits). There’s plenty going on when it comes to getting out and about too: a drive of 15 minutes or so will get you out into the Exmoor National Park or up to the coast for days at the beach in Ilfracombe.

Route directions

Don’t try to use the postcode in a satnav as it’s likely to send you the wrong way (grid reference 51.185797,-4.046058 is usually more helpful). Take the A3123 in the direction of Mortehoe and Woolacombe (do not continue on to Combe Martin at this point). At the T-junction turn right towards Combe Martin, but then take the first left, going steeply down a hill towards Berrynarbor. After 200 metres, take the first left turning into the farm lane by two bungalows (one called Bodstone Lodge). Continue down the lane, passing bins and a new build, then stay on the left side towards The Farmhouse, which will be the first property in front of you as you go down and round the bend.
