  • Dog-friendly rural Devon pop-up site in the Blackdown Hills
  • Half an hour’s drive to the Jurassic coast; five minutes from the A303
  • Country pubs, food shop and an American diner nearby
Switch between the river valleys of the Blackdown Hills and the coveted coves of the Jurassic Coast from Drakes Arms Farm. Simply show up, switch off and settle in for back to basics stays, circled by trees and surrounded by the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. On top of that, a location five minutes' drive from the A303 and 15 minutes from the nearest M5 junction means that this rural pop-up site is well-situated for fossil hunting at Lyme Regis (half an hour’s drive) or gazing at Gothic architecture in Exeter (40 minutes). This site will settle you nicely back to basics, as there are ample green spaces for children to play and for well-behaved dogs to wander around with you. Scenic spots, footpaths and bikeable country lanes are certainly plentiful around here, as you might expect from a place within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As for a nature reserve set over the site of a former Victorian estate, this is what you’ll find five minutes’ drive away at the Otterhead Lakes, where dogs can be walked on a lead. Keep your eyes peeled for nesting birds, dormice and other wildlife. If all that activity has your stomach grumbling, you’ll be happy to find a couple of country pubs and an American diner five minutes’ drive away from the site, as well as a food shop where you can source supplies. Foodies can also flock to Ilminster and Chard (15 minutes) or Axminster (25 minutes) for a nice variety of dishes.

Local attractions

Lace up your walking boots and make way for the many tracks and trails throughout Devon. While there are plenty close to the site, Exmoor National Park (45 minutes) is well-suited for a walking safari through the moorlands and woodlands. And to the east of here, the Quantock Hills (40 minutes) offer up a range of activities, with perhaps the most unusual being alpaca trekking. Make friends with more animals at Sidmouth’s Donkey Sanctuary (half an hour) and discover their adventure trails. Then, visit Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) to greet chipmunks, meerkats and peacocks, as long as the kids aren’t too busy running around in the playground. How about watersports? If you haven't already had your fill over on the coast, head to Wimbleball Lake (50 minutes). The activity centre has lessons in kayaking, sailing and paddleboarding, if you’ve got the balance for it. Alternatively, sink your rod into the water and set up for some trout fishing.
