  • Low-impact site in the country a 10-minute drive from Great Torrington
  • South West Coast Path and North Devon beaches half an hour’s drive
  • Honesty shop; stargazing; a 10-minute walk from the Tarka Trail
Surrounded by the lush countryside of North Devon, Winscott Camping is a small, intimate site that draws families and environmentally conscious holiday makers with spacious pitches spread across a large field, oodles of space in which the kids can run around and a genuine low-impact ethos. A 10-minute drive from Great Torrington, the site has a touch of wild camping about it, with simple amenities such as composting toilets (impeccably maintained) and a gas-powered camping shower. In addition to fresh water, there’s a covered washing-up station and an honesty shop that sells, among other things, logs and firelighters for the firepit (which you can pre-book). Although there are solar-powered fairy lights around and small LED lights in the toilet and shower (so you won’t have to fumble around in the dark for the toilet paper), this is an electricity-free site – all the better for admiring the spectacular starry skies at night. However, it might be wise to pack a few battery-powered torches, and make peace with the fact that you won’t be charging your mobile phone while you’re here. Not that you’ll need it, because you’ll likely be too busy exploring this splendid corner of England. The South West Coast Path and the beaches of North Devon (such as Instow, Clovelly and Westward Ho!) are half an hour’s drive away, and Dartmoor National Park can be reached in about 45 minutes. Don’t fancy driving that far? No problem: the Tarka Trail can be accessed within a 10-minute walk, and there are woodland and lakeside trails at Meeth Quarry Nature Reserve (15 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

In a bend of the River Torridge, surrounded by woodland, the 65 acres of RHS Garden Rosemoor (10 minutes’ drive) are divided into themed zones, including seasonal areas, orchards and colourful floral gardens, plus a fruit and vegetable patch growing berries and all sorts of pumpkins. In Bideford (25 minutes), the Railway Heritage Centre has interesting displays on the history of the local railways. Across the River Torridge from the centre is the Tarka the Otter Statue, a reminder that the Tarka Trail passes right through here. On the outskirts of town, the BIG Sheep is a theme park where the kids can meet farm animals. In Exeter (an hour and 10 minutes), an ornate neo-Gothic building houses the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, with its rotating exhibitions of contemporary works. For genuine Gothic architecture, head to Exeter Cathedral, which has 14th-century vaulting, stained-glass windows and an astronomical clock.
