  • Peaceful six-acre wild camping site with woodlands and meadows
  • A 25-minute drive to Westward Ho!; 35 minutes to Exmoor National Park
  • Nature trail; fresh produce available; hire a barbecue or firepit
From drinks by the sea to coastal walks or wandering around historic port towns, Milkmaid Meadow Campsite will let you tear off whichever chunk of the Devon coast you please. A 15-minute drive from Bideford, 25 minutes from Westward Ho! and 35 minutes from Exmoor National Park, this is a break with plenty of things to do in the way of walking, cycling, gliding somehow out at sea or simply hanging out somewhere nice to eat. Nature’s the star on site, as there are 22 acres of woodlands and meadows – wildlife, streams and trees included. The site has a nature trail where the showstoppers are an insect hotel and a rather pretty pond at the border of the site. Fairly simple’s the spell here, as there are two showers with hot water, composting loos and sinks for washing up. The communal firepit is also at hand but those of you looking for a more private gathering can hire out individual firepits and barbecues (firewood is available to purchase on site). Conveniently, the site has two solar-powered phone charging points and parking next to your pitch. As for food, well, the site has a spread of local produce for sale, including essentials such as eggs, meat and bread, as well as some fresh seasonal produce grown from the fat of the land you're on. Eating out instead? You may do so alongside Westward Ho! beach or one of Bideford’s cafés or restaurants. Appledore (20 minutes’ drive) and Instow (15 minutes’ drive) are also good for a foodie dive.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Jakki was really lovely, friendly, welcoming & helpful. Facilities were simple, well done & regularly cleaned. Beautiful location. Thanks so much for our stay

Disliked: My only criticism is, I feel the grass really needed cutting for camping, but didn't fully effect our stay

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Area and the owner

Disliked: There were a few things i was but miffed about. The car got stuck several times as the field is on a slope and is marshy in places, you won't find a level pitching place (not THAT important I suppose), had to halve our stay due to the exposed nature and type of the field with the AMBER weather warning, informed owner but as of yet not heard from them also regarding my deposit. I wanted to know if we could move dates we were the only people there. The track in when wet was 4 inch mud.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely remote location and facilities generally up-to-scratch. I stayed at this site last year and was keen to return.

Disliked: Unlike my last visit to Milkmaid Meadow, the main field was unmown and occupied by a few dozen sheep and an alpaca. I assume the field wasn't kept short to feed the livestock but made for a slightly uncomfortable pitch. Trying to get a relatively early night after a long, hot day was difficult since the sheep were often at close quarters and consistently noisy. The same was true early in the morning; before the sun had risen there were sheep just outside the tent grazing and having a full-volume conversation. I understand there was a smaller empty field on offer but this would've had a negligible effect on the noise since it was so close to the main field, and made the walk to facilities even longer. The walks to and from the facilities resulted in our shoes decorated with sheep poo that was hidden in the long grass. Overall still okay value for money, but - considering this site was roughly in the middle tier of prices of otherwise similar sites I booked for this trip - I wouldn't expect to be kept awake by 50 sheep nor walk through their dinner/toilet.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Friendly helpful host. Peaceful location. Excellent showers and composting toilets. Longer grass aided a comfortable night’s sleep. Also there were sheep to count if you were finding sleep difficult. An enjoyable camping experience.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Clean and well-kept campsite. Good size field, lovely fire pit, clever eco-toilet (clean and non-smelly thanks to the elevated toilet), very good organisation of the rubbish bins. The owner is lovely, she came to say hello and to offer logs for the fire and to check our needs. Self check-in and check-out (with no rush at all) Families with kids can ask to see the farm animals (alpaca, pigs, turqueys, sheeps etc) Positive and chilled vibes

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Peaceful

Disliked: Toilets are filthy and up steps with a long drop to compost 😂 and the grass so long. Toads and sheep poo everywhere as there is a large pond near toilet. Lady let her dogs poo without picking it up. Showers were freezing as had no gas. One camper told them but still no hot water next day!

From the manager: Please read the 20 other reviews as this is the only bad one & i have no idea who these people were. The toilets & showers are actually very clean, I did have a problem with the gas boiler for a very short period but it was fixed within 48 hours & even within this period it was possible to get the boiler going, which I explained to all the campers apart from these guests - who i clearly didn't meet!
