  • Luxurious family-friendly Devon glamping near Cheriton Bishop
  • A 15-minute drive from Dartmoor National Park and Castle Drogo
  • Spacious safari tents with private kitchens, bathrooms and hot tubs
Looking for a luxurious camping holiday with family and friends? Fancying the sound of Devon, with easy access to Dartmoor National Park or the bright lights of Exeter? Read on to find out all about Sunsets and Marshmallows, a bijou glampsite on the outskirts of Cheriton Bishop village, where you can stay in some really rather special and spacious safari tents. As well as three bedrooms, each tent has electricity and is exceptionally well equipped and stylishly furnished to the very highest of standards. Stylishly decked out private bathrooms all have powerful showers and proper toilets. There’s wifi reception everywhere (so there should be no grumbles from the kids on that front) and all manner of games and books for any cooler days. In short, it’s rather like staying in a cottage – but with the sense of adventure that comes from sleeping under canvas. Outside is the place to be by day and night – after dark, you can toast the sunset with bubbles in the hot tub, spark up the barbecue and snuggle up around the firepit on boho tree-trunk seating. Thanks to the (approximately) half-an-acre grassy space around each safari tent, there’s masses of room for kids to let off steam safely, and any canine pals can join in the fun too (just be sure to clean up after the dogs please).

Local attractions

It’s a cinch to get out on hiking and cycling trails in rugged Dartmoor National Park (15 minutes’ drive), where you can follow riverside walks down to the clapper bridge at Fingle (10 minutes) or hike up to Scorhill Stone Circle (25 minutes). Other landmarks to look out for on the moor include waterfalls like Canonteign (25 minutes) and Becky Falls (35 minutes). If stately homes are your thing, explore the art deco-inspired rooms at National Trust-owned Castle Drogo (15 minutes), and wander its manicured gardens and woodland walks. Powderham Castle (25 minutes) is also open for guided tours of lavish rooms packed with antiques and priceless tapestries, or for an architectural oddity, head for the National Trust-owned A La Ronde (half an hour), a circular Victorian folly with shell-encrusted rooms and fireplaces. Travelling with the kids? If they’ve put up with your visits to historic houses, now’s the time to reward them with a day out on the go-karts, climbing frames and pirate ship at Crealy Theme Park and Resort (20 minutes), or take animal-mad youngsters to groom Shire horses, meet shaggy Shetland ponies and follow nature walks at The Miniature Pony Centre (25 minutes).
