  • Valley site among mature trees and landscaped ponds
  • A mile from Haldon Forest Park
  • Playground and modern toilet and shower blocks
Pitching up in the River Kenn valley, on a park surrounded by Devon woodland and countryside, with mature trees and landscaped ponds complete with resident ducks… does this sound like it might fit the bill? If so, take your flock to Haldon Forest Holiday Park, five miles from Exeter and just a mile from the woodland and bike trails of the 3500-acre Haldon Forest Park. Haldon Forest has a playground on the park for kids to go out on a limb under the watchful eye of more mature types. The site also has up to date laundry facilities, plus three modern toilet and shower blocks with heating and free hot water. All in all, you’ll surely find this park all that it’s quacked up to be…

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Well maintained site with largely flat pitches. Modern, clean toilet/shower blocks with unlimited warm water. Friendly staff.

Disliked: Could hear nearby dog kennels at certain times of day. We were in the top field, so not particularly intrusive. Some of the on-site facilities were closed as we were there in September, but this is understandable as the site was very quiet at this time.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Nicely laid out site. Very friendly owners. Clean toilets. Not busy when I stayed in September so I was able to pick a nice pitch away from others. The children's play area looked nice although I didn't need it. Also the back field which contained a small pitch for football with goals was wilded in the middle with well mown grass around which created a nice grass running track. Haldon Forest nearby is fabulous.

Disliked: A very close kennels giving an almost continuous chorus of dogs barking throughout the day.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Good play park, nice location surrounded by trees, good size pitches, lots of space, football pitch in the field that got all the kids playing together, very sociable site…

Disliked: The entrance needs some work, looks very run down, like an abandoned building site, but once you’ve driven through it the site at the top is great.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Freedom for the children, picking our pitches and the facilities were clean and easy to find. Exploring the woods and the football pitch were brilliant. Location for getting to Exeter and Torbay is excellent.

Disliked: Taps in the bathroom! Having to hold it down didn’t make washing hands very easy and the hand dryer was pointless. Take a towel to dry your hands!

Local attractions

Bring the bikes to Devon or hire wheels at Haldon Forest Park to take full advantage of the miles of woodland mountain bike and cycle trails for various levels of ability. Discovery trails, play equipment and several walking trails are also in the forest park including the circular Butterfly Trail and the easy-rated Mamhead Sensory Trail with gorgeous views along the Jurassic Coast and over the Exe estuary. A ten mile horse riding trail is also around for more relaxed forest sightseeing, with horse riding of a different type at the forest’s Exeter Racecourse. Dartmoor National Park, with more hacking, hiking and biking as well as tor climbing, guided walks and geocaching, is a short drive from the holiday park. It has regular events throughout the year, towns and villages to take in, the famous Dartmoor ponies to spot and Dartmoor Zoo with meerkats, monkeys, lions and more. Bring binoculars along with the bikes: the forest park and surrounding area are wildlife havens, with rare birds of prey and wild deer in the forest itself and birdwatching a few miles away at the Site of Special Scientific Interest the Exe Estuary: watch oystercatchers showing excellent culinary taste in breaking open mussels at Bull Hill or take a trip to the nature reserve at Dawlish Warren at the estuary’s mouth. If you’re bringing along the bikes, the National Cycle Network Exe Estuary Trail runs to Exmouth from Dawlish. The sublime sand of Dawlish Warren is one of several South Devon sandy stretches, with the beaches at Teignmouth, Exmouth and Torbay within easy distance of Haldon Forest and the coastal towns of Torquay and Paignton a little further along the coast. Exmouth is the place to don the wetsuit as it’s known for watery sports of all types including diving, windsurfing and sailing; it’s also a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Finally, a stay at Haldon Forest has to include a day or two in Exeter to see its twelfth century cathedral, medieval Guildhall and famous historic quayside with antique shops, restaurants, canoe and boat trips and events such as dragon boat racing and guided tours.
