General

  • Relaxed, off-grid site with views over Devon’s hills towards Exeter
  • City centre a 10-min drive, Topsham 25 and Exmouth beach 35 mins away
  • Communal firepit; free-range eggs and firewood for sale on site

A lovely lookout across to Devon’s capital city is indeed a rather big draw at Exeter View Stables, a relaxed and friendly site in the leafy surrounds of this cracking county. If you’re one for eco-friendly expeditions, here’s a bit of news for you too: this park is completely off-grid – with all power coming from the sun – and it has a water borehole and compost toilet as well (and a rather smart one at that – even harsh compost loo critics among previous guests have given this one the nod of approval…)

When dusk falls, warmth comes from the communal firepit overlooking the surrounding hills and across to the estuary; you can even see the cathedral lights glimmer after dark. Build up your own blaze for eats or get the barbecue going – firewood (as well as eggs from Exeter View Stables' free-roaming chickens) can be bought at the park and supermarkets are about a 10-minute drive away.

Not coming by car? Exeter St David’s train station is the same distance away by taxi. There's a warm welcome for those toting their backpack along on foot or by bike – in fact the folk on site are so keen to encourage such behaviour they even offer a discount for eco travellers (be sure to book an eco pitch to take advantage of that). This is an off-grid site but facilities are available for phone charging (phew).

If you do have your own wheels, attractions in the local area to seek out include the northern part of craggy Dartmoor National Park, 20 minutes away, for hikes through woodland and ancient valleys.

Adventures done for the day, head back to base to unwind safe in the knowledge you’ll have a bit of peace and quiet – the owners of this site keep numbers low to ensure it never gets overrun.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The setting is amazing, high up overlooking Exeter, particularly enchanting with a clear night when the city sparkles. Syd and Rupert couldn't have made us feel more at home and the peace, tranquility and ease that they and the site exuded was most refreshing. It is inspiring to see how innovation, vision and determination translate into an entirely off-grid, solar site - it can be done, and it is a valuable asset to the community. It offers a chance to experience a moment of life in a more natural, organic and considered way.
The bathroom facilities were clean and clear information was posted throughout re: Covid, and Syd and Rupert were accessible, without being at all intrusive. Simon's services with his campsite Taxi were so much appreciated.
Looking forward to coming back soon.

What a beautiful, peaceful place to stay with wonderful views. The owners were very friendly available if we needed anything. My 5 year old loved the calfs in the field and enjoyed building a fire in their fire pit. Would highly recommend staying here ❤️

We were attracted to this site because of it’s clear description as an eco friendly site. Right from the point of booking the communication with Syd was exceptional.
We had a wonderful pitch with the most incredible views. It is also the perfect spot for star gazing and we were lucky enough to see several shooting stars as the skies were clear.
We were particularly impressed with the fantastic compost loo. I can honestly say that if you are cautious about booking because of this...don’t be. It was probably the nicest toilet I have seen on any camp site! I will attach photos to prove it.
The shower was also spotless and worked really well. Syd provides free shower products and has a little library of books that you can borrow. She also sells fresh eggs, firewood and other products that you may need, you just pop the money in the honesty box.
The high level of customer care given by the friendly site owners Syd and Rupert really is second to none and nothing is too much trouble for them. We can’t wait to visit again.
Get booking, you won’t regret it!

The cabin was so nicely set up - very cute and cosy, with fantastic views over the city. It had everything we needed and there were lots of nice touches. The campsite itself was great - the toilet and shower were v clean and we couldn’t find any fault in them. Syd, the owner, was so helpful and friendly- she clearly takes a lot of pride in what she does!

We really liked to see the beautiful cows and the view in front of us.
The shower and the compost toilet was really sweet.
It is really good place to access the city and the shopping and Dartmoor and so on!

    Disliked:

The entrance from the campsite to the pitch area, the path was rough and many stones were quite big one..
I was worried that car tyres might be affected by the drive.

From the manager...

Hi many thanks for your lovely review especially about our compost loo and shower area!!

We are really glad you had a nice time.

With regards to the track leading upto the campsite.. it is a well maintained farm type track, we check it regularly for bigger stones that sometimes become dislodged from the sides of the track etc, as we live in the countryside it isn’t a completely smooth tarmac/city type track but we’ve never had any issues/damage to our vehicles driving up it ourselves with the stones/rocks and neither have any guests.. so we are a little unsure about this part of the review, maybe due to the relentless storms we had when you guys were here the heavy rain had caused a few bigger stones/rocks to make there way down the track which we missed and apologies if this was the case.

Again thanks again for the review and hope to see you another (less stormy) time x

Beautiful views over the valley and a tranquil setting, great for families, couples and groups. This is a small, friendly, and well-run campsite in a lovely location, with Exeter, the Devon coast and Dartmoor all a short drive away. Facilities are basic but very clean and nicely organised. The managers were helpful and saw to our needs.

    Disliked:

There is a large pylon on-site which can emit a loud buzzing sound in wet and humid weather. Not noticeable in dry conditions but it's distracting on damp days.

Syd and Rupert are lovely and welcoming and make you feel so at home. The campsite is great, the views are stunning! Had everything I needed and felt very comfortable here. I also booked the 'Hut' for a few extra nights after my tent-camping (as I needed to extend my trip and rain looked likely). It was all lovely. Thank you!

Local attractions

As well as all the sights of Exeter, which include the cathedral, a clutch of Tudor buildings and the medieval Underground Passages in the centre, another place to spend a stint is Topsham village, a 25-minute drive away – the park here is a top spot for birding along the estuary or taking a tug boat over to the pub just across the water.

Further on towards the coast is Exmouth beach, a family-friendly, sandy space accessible on the train line (from both Topsham and Exeter), with restaurants and cafés to totter towards in town. Once the kids have worn out their bucket and spade, take them on the rides at Crealy Theme Park & Resort in Sidmouth, 20 minutes away.

Grownups might like to factor in a little time in this town too for roams around Bicton Park Botanical Gardens and ganders at the Regency-era architecture – if the kids start to moan, simply pack them off for more sandy times at Sidmouth beach.
