  • Leafy Devon Caravan and Motorhome Club site on Exeter Racecourse
  • Haldon Forest Park five minutes’ drive and Canonteign Falls 15 minutes
  • Member price shown; non-members select £15/night extra or join for £69
Here’s something a little bit different… Book a stay at Exeter Racecourse Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and you get a spacious pitch in the middle of the course. Set high above Devon’s Haldon Hill overlooking historic Exeter, the site has spectacular views over the surrounding heather and gorse moorland. You can get right up close to the action on race days, and there’s a Sunday car-boot sale right on your doorstep too. This site is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and it’s open to non-members as well as members, with discounted rates for members. The price displayed is the member rate; non-members will need to pay the £15/night extra or buy a £69 membership. Membership is worth considering if you’re likely to spend more than four nights at a Club site over the coming year – it brings discounts at more than 140 UK sites, plus other perks including access to tailored caravan/motorhome insurance, discounts on days out and savings on top brands. As with all Club sites, amenities are well kept; the shower blocks have disabled access, a baby-changing room, dishwashing sinks and a laundry area. Your four-legged chums are welcome, and there is a dedicated dog walk leading from the pitches directly onto the moor.

Local attractions

There’s much to see and do in Exeter (15 minutes’ drive), from touring the stunning Gothic-era cathedral and its soaring stone-vaulted ceiling to discovering the extraordinary collections of fossils, Roman mosaics and landscape paintings in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery. Culture dealt with, head for the historic waterside quays for a pint in a traditional pub or supper in a seafood restaurant. To immerse yourself in dramatic moorland scenery, take a scenic stroll up Haytor (20 minutes) in Dartmoor National Park, or visit Canonteign Falls (15 minutes) to admire the highest waterfall in England, stroll through a Victorian fern garden and refuel on cream teas in the café. Restless kids can run riot in Haldon Forest Park (five minutes) on an array of walking, cycling and mountain-biking trails, plus the Go Ape Haldon attraction with treetop rope courses. Older kids will doubtless also enjoy quad biking along muddy forest tracks at Ashcombe Quads, or testing their skills with a bow and arrow at Ashcombe Valley Archers (both 10 minutes).
