  • Peaceful family-run farm site with stunning views of north Dartmoor
  • A 15-minute drive from Fingle Bridge; half an hour from Lydford Gorge
  • Back to basics, with rural pubs and cycling trails a short drive away
What a patch from which to explore the southwest and Dartmoor. With views of north Dartmoor, this back to basics site is a great base to explore Devon. Plus, it’s only a five-minute drive from the A30 (which heads on down to Cornwall for you folk looking to extend your travels southwards). This peaceful site is on a family-run farm five minutes’ drive away from the edge of Dartmoor National Park. So, easily go hiking and cycling (or on lazier days, shopping or sightseeing in the local towns and cities). Dartmoor’s 449 miles of public rights of way and landscapes like moorlands and river valleys are a right treat. Some of the closest spots include Fingle Bridge (15 minutes’ drive), a 17th-century stone bridge, the huge Fernworthy Reservoir (25 minutes) and the stunning Lydford Gorge (half an hour). Those keen on walking and cycling can stroll to the Two Moors Way or the Throwleigh, Gidleigh and Belston commons in no more than 15 minutes. Off-road cycle routes are also within driving distance, such as sections of the Wray Valley, Granite Way, Tarka Trail, Haldon Forest trails and the Exe Valley Way. Just as noteworthy are the rural pubs and eateries, which serve tasty food using locally-sourced produce. The nearest is just a five-minute drive from the site in Whiddon Down, and there are more pubs a short drive away in Spreyton (10 minutes), Cheriton Bishop (10 minutes) and Drewsteignton (10 minutes). Getting provisions is simple too, with local cafés, restaurants and farm shops selling local products. The local farm shop and café is under three miles away. Sea and sand also on your mind? Whether you go to the north or to the south, Devon’s spectacular beaches are between a 40-minute and an hour’s drive of the Davylands Farm Campsite too, like Bude (an hour), Dawlish (45 minutes) and Teignmouth (40 minutes).

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Really peaceful location. Good and flat too. Easy to get to. Nice and friendly owner, who came over and welcomed us. The toilet was super clean and not a porta potti cubical - more like a composting toilet situation. Washing up facilities, nice and clean.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A wonderful quiet campsite, in a lovely location in the middle of nowhere makes a very pleasant, almost wild camping experience! Excellent views, wonderful clean facilities. The hosts of the campsite were very kind and approachable and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble for them, and they were very flexible and understanding! I would highly recommend this for a lovely quiet campsite!

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful views - particularly for watching the sunset and being watched by the cows at breakfast time. Great for stargazing on a clear night with uninterrupted skies over Dartmoor. Perfect location with lots to do nearby; we opted for a Dartmoor walk and dip at Shilley pool. Being able to park near the tent and have a toilet and sink with running water close by was really handy - the peacefulness of wild camping with the luxuries of a site! Sarah was very friendly and helpful and went above and beyond. Thank you!

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Great site, we stopped off on our way to Cornwall, near to the m5. Lovely views and got to watch the sunset from our pitch. It was very peaceful. Simple but practical facilities was all we needed. Closest to wild camping we could get without having a toilet on-board. Great instructions for arrival and friendly owners too.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely little site with great views of Dartmoor just outside Okehampton. The field was flat and dry, considering the amount of rain we had had in the previous week. We weren't expecting much in the way of facilities but were pleased to see that the owners had made the best of a simple portaloo by having it in a pretty trailer with fairy lights. They also had a map on the wall of the trailer, tourist leaflets and a cold water shower. We had a pleasant couple of days using this central site as a base for Devon.
