Meadowview: Looking into the hut

General

  • Peaceful shepherd's hut in a quiet spot a few minutes from the M5
  • A five-minute drive to Cullompton; half an hour to Exeter
  • Spacious hut with kingsize bed, kitchen and full shower room

It’s something of a supersized shepherd’s hut that you’ll find parked up at spacious and splendid Meadowview, in the Devon countryside five minutes’ drive from Cullompton (and a similarly short drive from the M5, for stress-free arrivals, departures and days out and about).

Cosy but in no way cramped is the order of the day for stays here: the handbuilt hut (which goes by the name of Benny) contains a comfy kingsize bed, a little kitchen (with a kettle, microwave, toaster and small fridge plus a breakfast bar to eat at) and a full shower room (with toilet, large shower, basin, mirror and heated towel rail).

Outside, there’s a seating area and a full-sized barbecue (pick up all the bits you’ll need for a fine feast at the supermarkets and shops in Cullompton). There’s lots of space to chill out around the hut: Benny lives in his own garden area, up on a small hill with lovely green views all around. And of course, this being a shepherd’s hut, you may be joined by a flock of sheep grazing in the next-door field from time to time.

Tear yourselves away from this little haven and your days out might include visits to Exeter, seaside days in Exmouth or walks in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – all are half an hour or so away. Meadowview is also a good base for touring Devon by bike: there are great cycle paths to follow along the nearby Tiverton Canal and along the banks of the River Exe south of Exeter.

Everything!!!! It was the perfect little stay after our wedding! They even left a card and bottle of wine for us to share! :) everything was there that we needed (bbq equipment for cooking!)

We loved it and can’t wait to return (hopefully!) next year for our anniversary!

    Disliked:

Be aware of the location - flies like the warmth and light! But to be expected when in a field surrounded by sheep! We got used to it and it didn’t stop us loving it at all!

Loved everything about Benny the shepards hut. The location was peaceful, we enjoyed watching the sheep graze, there's a comfy king size bed, the en suite, which had toiletries and towels provided, the decking area with a table and two reclining chairs, the arbour seating by the fire pit. The kitchen had a sink, toaster, kettle, fridge, microwave and a lovely breakfast bar, where you can enjoy breakfast watching the sun rise. There was also a radio and mirror next to the bed. Theres a storage box to the side of the hut with everything you need to start your fire. We got to meet David who was lovely.

Surprisingly spacious and very well decorated also, made for a very relaxed wedding night!

Possibly the greatest shepherd's hut and location in the UK!02/08/2021

WOW! What a location, what a lovely shepherd's hut and an absolute credit to Carol and David!

If you are after tranquillity and peace and a connect from the rampage and distractions from everyday life, get your money out and pay to come and stay here.

Benny (the awesome shepherd's hut) is set in a field with outstanding views and remotely set away from the rest of the world, you will have complete privacy and plenty of time to just chill. You are however literally 10 minutes away from joining the M5 to head north or south and quickly find yourself at many of the outstanding places of interest and things to do, whilst staying in this beautiful part of the UK.

Benny is bigger than your normal shepherd's hut and after staying here for 7 nights, we didn't miss anything from home and were genuinely sad to be leaving after the 7 day break. Benny was very comfortable with everything we needed (the King size bed ensured an epic nights sleep, every night!).

You'll see from the facilities that there is no oven / hob and this was something we weren't too sure about before arriving for our stay but trust me, firing up the BBQ / Fire Pit and sitting on that lovely bench with the person you love, with a glass of wine whilst your food is cooking away, was pure bliss. Over the 7 nights, we used the BBQ 4 times and ate out locally for the other 3 (this was always our plan) and zero issues here whatsoever, there's many lovely places to eat within very easy travelling distance.

We were left alone during our stay, with only a brief courtesy visit by David (they live just down the country lane) but we were provided with all contact details and even told to "pop down" if we had a queries / questions. It was nice to see David and endearing that after saying hello and asking us if everything was OK (which it totally was), he asked if we needed anything (we didn't) - Absolute legend! It just added to the relaxed nature of our stay and we appreciated the personal touch by David taking time out to make sure we were good. There's a great info / details guide that you'll find inside Benny, once you've arrived too.

You've got a big Tesco and an Aldi (with a Home Bargains next to Aldi), just 2 miles away and plenty of other shops on Cullompton high street too - So whilst Benny is remote whilst you're there, you are less than 10 minutes away from supplies.

We (husband and wife team) took both our car and our motorcycle and for you bikers out there, you can park your bike safely and without worry outside the hut. Plenty of very enjoyable routes to ride on down there!

If you've made it down to the end of our review and you're still wondering whether this shepherd's hut and this location is for you - Stop thinking about it, it really is!

Our thanks again to Carol and David, you have provided the most wonderful experience and memories we will carry with us forever and we're grateful we found Benny.

    Shaun & Laura

David and Carol have created a stunning Shepard’s Hut which is just 10 mins from the M5 but feels absolutely removed from everything. We arrived to a spotlessly clean and well appointed hut with everything you’d need provided.
You can tell that it’s been put together with love and creativity with plenty of handmade pieces.
    The bed was exceptionally comfortable.
The excellent BBQ / fire pit was stocked with charcoal wood and kindling.
From the deck we saw all kinds of wildlife, including the occasional pheasant and birds of prey. When it was too cold to stay out the hut is entirely insulated so is very warm at night.

Take a drive (or a decent walk) into Cullumpton and visit The Bakehouse for a decent lunch for reasonable prices - the chocolate and hazelnut torte with clotted cream was 10/10 - and get some steaks or sausage from the butcher to cook on the BBQ.

    Disliked:

No dislikes at all, but a suggestion. The hut doesn’t have a hob, so you’re limited to what you can cook on the BBQ or in the microwave provided. We brought our gas ring with us because I’m a coffee snob and can’t do without my morning Bialetti.
The loungers are very comfortable however a table and chairs on the decking would be welcome for dining.
Bring a parasol! There’s very little natural shade for shade dwellers.

Our stay in Benny's hut was perfect in every way. The weather, the sheep, and the site combined to make a very welcome first outing in over 18 months.

The hut and site could not be better - a private setting overlooking a meadow, with a nice BBQ spot and bench, and a lovely deck with reclining chairs make for a great outdoor space. Inside, a full-sized shower with plenty of hot water and a nicely outfitted kitchen give you all of the comforts of home.

If you are looking for a base for exploring the area, Benny's is an idea place. If you are lucky enough to have sheep for your neighbours, you'll be surrounded by them!

National Trust sites may also form part of your itinerary in these parts. Killerton House (20 minutes), an 18th-century house, and Knightshayes Court (20 minutes), a Victorian country house, both open their doors to visitors to take a trip back in time.

With Yarak Birds of Prey (15 minutes) for bird flying shows and Chevithorne Barton (20 minutes) for an oak collection and garden, nature or wildlife fans will find plenty to entertain themselves with.

Interested in pebble beach dips, a loop walk or somewhere to take off onto the South West Coast Path from? Budleigh Salterton (40 minutes) will fit the bill nicely for those sorts of activities.
