Herons Bank Caravan and Camping Site: Camping and caravanning field

General

  • Secure rural site 10 minutes' walk from the centre of Cullompton
  • Close to walks in the Blackdown Hills; 25 minutes' drive to Exeter
  • Simple riverside pitches a mile from the M5

Perhaps you’re in need of somewhere to stop over for a quiet night’s sleep on a journey down the M5 – or maybe you’d like a handy base for hikes in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Either way, you should find quiet and convenient Herons Bank Caravan and Camping Site to be a most agreeable spot.

Just on the edge of Cullompton, on the banks of the River Culm and about a mile from Junction 28 of the M5, this simple site ticks several wishlist boxes for those seeking a quick stopover and folk planning a longer jaunt to the Devon countryside. That edge-of-village location means that although your surroundings are rural, it’ll only take you 10 minutes or so to wander into town for a pint at the local pub.

While you’re there you could also stop in at the supermarket and/or farm shop for supplies to put on the grill, as barbecues are allowed back on site. It’s a very simple setup here, with just toilets and chemical disposal on the facilities front, but it’s also a secure one, with a proper gated entrance for the safety of all guests.

If you’re sticking around for a few days you should find plenty to fill your days nearby – if you fancy a change of walking scenery it’s not far to the Exmoor National Park, the streets of Exeter or the stunning stretch of the Jurassic Coast around Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton.

Local attractions

Sometimes you just need a quick stopover – but it’s certainly worth sticking around at Herons Bank for a little longer if you can. For starters, it’s close to several places to entertain the kids – including the excellent Diggerland Devon (five minutes’ drive), Yarak Birds of Prey (10 minutes) and Devon Railway Centre (20 minutes).

Kids (and grownups) are also likely to like beach days in Sidmouth or Budleigh Salterton (both about 35 minutes) or a stroll around Exeter (25 minutes), perhaps including a tour of the underground passages and a visit to the cathedral (where family events and activities are available throughout the year).

For a more grown-up day out, you may prefer a tour of the stately home and gardens at Knightshayes Court (20 minutes) or a hike through Exmoor National Park (40 minutes) before a tour and tipple at Wellhayes Vineyard (25 minutes).
