Black Barn Camping is a Devon site with pitches spread across five acres of field and woodland 20 minutes’ drive from Cullompton. There are some lovely walks to be had here through ancient woodlands with gorgeous views of the Devon, Somerset and Dorset countryside – just to give you a taste of what lies beyond in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you’re aiming to get out for walks on your break, you’ve come to the right place – as well as the trails around the local area, you can also get to Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks within 45 minutes’ drive, or head south to hit the South West Coast Path in half an hour. Something else in mind? Beaches, fossil hunts and family outings to the likes of Diggerland Devon and Crealy Theme Park are close by. The setup back at the site is all very peaceful and eco-friendly: think wild camping but with a few added extras in the form of drinking water (from a well) and a compost toilet. Campfires are allowed, but your firepit must be raised off the ground – there’s a communal firepit you can use, and fire saucers available to buy if needed. (You’ll also need to make sure your flames are fully extinguished before you leave the fire for the night…) In keeping with the eco-conscious ethos there are no bins on site, so you’ll need to take all rubbish away with you.
