General
- Overlooking the beach and a two-minute walk to the sands at Croyde
- Suitable for families and small- to medium-sized groups
- Bars, pubs, cafés and restaurants a 15-minute walk away
Feel well, feel free at Freshwell Camping close to the seaside town of Croyde in north Devon: this pretty place overlooks the sea and guests can pitch up anywhere they please in the main field overlooking the beach.
As you’ll know if you’ve ever been to Devon before, there’s enough to do around here to keep you busy for weeks. And as you’ll also know, this can lead to dithering as you decide on what best to see and do first… all sorted here, as the friendly Freshwell team are more than happy to share their expert tips and advice on local attractions (and are available 24/7 to assist with checking in or with questions about the site).
You won’t need any help finding the nearest sands though, as Croyde beach is a couple of minutes’ walk away. The site’s also within easy driving distance of days out at Ilfracombe, Woolacombe, Saunton Sands and Baggy Point; inland adventures around Exmoor and the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and waterside days around the River Taw. Barnstaple is half an hour’s drive away.
Freshwell has a ‘limited but reliable’ set of facilities including showers and toilets checked and cleaned twice a day, a sink area to wash and clean utensils, free parking for vehicles, a wetsuit wash bin, some mobile phone charging and waste recycling bins.
Bars, pubs, cafés and restaurants are a 15-minute walk away; supermarkets are within 15 minutes’ drive.

Local attractions
You won’t have to travel far for a range of attractions and activities: Croyde beach and its watersports are within a couple of minutes’ walk, and surfing is a top pick here and at Putsborough Sands 10 minutes’ drive away, Saunton Sands (15 minutes), Woolacombe (20 minutes), Ilfracombe (25 minutes) and Westward Ho! (45 minutes).
For hikes, access the South West Coast Path at Croyde for the five-mile leg to Woolacombe passing the National Trust-managed headland of Baggy Point, and from there 15 miles further towards Braunton. Or drive the 10 minutes to Baggy Point instead and access the circular trails from here, ranging from gentle family ambles to hardier hikes; bike paths also run from here and there are gardens and a tearoom for fuelling up at afterwards.
Also have a look at Exmoor, accessed via Blackmoor Gate 35 minutes’ drive away, and the Tarka Trail section from Meeth to Braunton on a 31-mile car-free loop. The Museum of British Surfing is at Braunton for afterwards, or you could stagger over to the sand dunes of Braunton Burrows, the biggest dune system in Britain and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
An amusement arcade is 10 minutes away.

Dear Deevika,
Thanks for your feedback, and many apologies for the crowd this weekend. It is actually very rare to have this experience at Freshwell if you look back through all our other customer reviews online.
On this occasion, the recent announcement of a change in social distancing from Monday 14th (Max 6 people) encouraged peoples behaviour to be very different than usual and much more anti-social. Our staff attempted asking these groups to be quiet but instead just got verbal abuse in return, so it wasn't without our trying to keep it quiet for others.
We pride ourselves on providing a relaxed camping experience and we would encourage you to return to see how it really is another time. Apologies again, Mike & John, Freshwell
